David Guerrero, 17, was shot and killed while walking to a bus stop on June 26, 2013. Eric Roopnarine, 22, was shot and killed during a robbery on July 4, 2013.

Kissimmee Police said 15-year-old boy Konrad Schafer shot and killed 17-year-old David Guerrero around 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 26 while Guerrero was walking to a bus stop on his way to work.

Schafer and 20-year-old David Damus are charged with first-degree murder in Guerrero's death.

Police said the teen was looking for random targets and "thought it would be fun to shoot a person."

“We can’t believe there’s kids out there, 15 years old, thinking that something like this could be fun,” said Liz Zapata, Guerrero's aunt.

In a news conference Tuesday, investigators revealed Shafer and Damas were also connected to the July 4 death of Eric Roopnarine. They also said ballistic evidence points to Shafer and Damas as those responsible for shooting into random homes and vehicles throughout the county.

Although Damus was Schafer's driver in Guerrero's death, investigators said he pulled the trigger on Roopnarine after him and three others tried to rob the 22-year-old's house.

Those arrested in Roopnarine's murder include a 17-year-old girl, who allegedly lured him to the front door during the fatal robbery, and 20-year-old Juan Sebastian Muriel.

All four are charged with first-degree murder, home invasion with a firearm and grand theft in Roopnarine's death.

Investigators believe these four had no intention of stopping their reign of terror anytime soon.

“We have reasons to believe that these guys ran out of rounds," said Kissimmee Police Chief Lee Massie. "So the fact that we were able to expedite the case and get these guys off the street before they could re-up was critical.”

Police were able to link Schafer to Guerrero’s death after locating a shell casing in a retention pond.

It turns out, the casing came his father’s firearm that Schafer had taken.

Per News 13's Crime Guidelines, we do not identify juvenile suspects unless they are charged as an adult. Schafer is being charged as an adult in both crimes.

Teen accused of shooting spree, murder scheduled for December trial

The Osceola County teenager charged with first-degree murder in a spate of shootings that left two dead in June, pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to be tried in December, court records show.

Konrad Hans Schafer, 15, will be tried as an adult and is facing two counts of first-degree murder in the June shooting deaths of 17-year-old David Guerrero and 22-year-old Eric Roopnarine.

Schafer and his three co-defendants — Victoria Rios, 17; David Damus, 20; and Juan Muriel, 20 — are accused of carrying out a random shooting spree in late June and early July using a .45-caliber carbine.

They were indicted by a grand jury. Schafer's murder trial is expected to begin Dec. 2, records show.

Schafer is accused of using the .45-caliber carbine in about 20 shootings across the county. Police say Schafer used the weapon to shoot and kill Guerrero for "fun" about dawn June 26 while the teen walked to a bus stop on his way to work.

Co-defendant David Damus, 20, of Kissimmee is charged with using the same weapon to kill Roopnarine with Schafer's assistance during a home invasion on the night of July 3 at the victim's home in Poinciana. Juan Muriel, 20, of Poinciana was also arrested on charges of first-degree murder and other crimes linked to Roopnarine's death.

Schafer and Rios also face charges of armed burglary of a dwelling. The two teens will be tried as adults. Orange-Osceola State Attorney Jeff Ashton has said he intends to personally prosecute the four co-defendants.

Court records show Schafer was arraigned Tuesday and remains in the Osceola County jail without bond. Damus and Muriel also remain held without bail in the Osceola County Jail.

Konrad Schafer murder trial set for January

The trial for Konrad Schafer, an Osceola County teenager charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of a teenage boy and a man in 2013, will begin in January.

Konrad Schafer was 15 when investigators said he killed Eric Roopnarine, 22, during an alleged robbery in Poinciana in July 2013. Investigators said the teen also killed 17-year-old David Guerrero at a bus stop in a separate incident. He is also a suspect in several drive-by shootings around Kissimmee that did not injure anyone.

Schafer is one of four people accused in the murders. Co-defendant Juan Muriel took a plea deal and agreed to testify against the suspected accomplices Victoria Rios, Juan Muriel and David Damus — who were all between 17 and 22 when they were charged two years ago.

In June, Damus was found guilty of first-degree murder and armed burglary. He faces life in prison when he is sentenced.

The trial for Victoria Rios was postponed again last month after the defense filed a motion to suppress eight hours of videotaped statements from Rios after the murder. The defense wants the videotaped statements dropped from the trial. An Osceola County judge said this is the final postponement in the trial.

Konrad Schafer, teen charged with 1st-degree murder, expected to take plea deal

OSCEOLA COUNTY -- Konrad Schafer, the Osceola County teenager charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of a teenage boy and a man in 2013, is expected to take a plea agreement Friday, the State Attorney's Office said.

Schafer was 15 when investigators said he killed Eric Roopnarine, 22, during an alleged robbery in Poinciana in July 2013. Investigators said the teen also killed 17-year-old David Guerrero at a bus stop in a separate incident. He is also a suspect in several drive-by shootings around Kissimmee that did not injure anyone.

Schafer is one of four people accused in the slayings. Co-defendant Juan Muriel took a plea deal and agreed to testify against suspected accomplices Victoria Rios, Schafer and David Damus — who were all between 17 and 22 when they were charged two years ago.

In June, Damus was found guilty of first-degree murder and armed burglary. He faces life in prison when he is sentenced.

The trial for Rios was postponed for a second time in September after the defense filed a motion to suppress eight hours of videotaped statements from Rios after Roopnarine's killing. The defense wants the videotaped statements dropped from the trial.

An Osceola County judge said this is the final postponement in the trial.

Mistrial declared in Victoria Rios murder case

The murder trial of Victoria Rios, the last of four defendants charged with the 2013 murder of Eric Roopnarine in Poinciana, ended in a mistrial Thursday afternoon.

Twelve jurors could not decide whether Rios is guilty in either the murder of Roopnarine, a 22-year-old student and club promoter, or the burglary of the home where he lived with his mother.

Rios, 19, will have another trial in the future in front of a different jury.

She was one of four co-defendants charged with Roopnarine's murder. Rios was not accused of shooting or stabbing Roopnarine, but face

State Attorney Jeff Ashton, who prosecuted the case, declined to comment because it will go to trial again.

Roopnarine's family members who have been coming to the courthouse for the last three years to attend the four co-defendants hearings had hoped to put the legal proceedings behind them.

His mother, Sarita Roopnarine, testified in open court twice about the night she came home and found her son dead in the living room: during the trial of co-defendant David Damus last year and again this week. She ended both testimonies in tears.

"It's hard to go through this again," said Eric Roopnarine's father, Pooran Roopnarine. "You have to re-live it again."

Still, Pooran Roopnarine said he thought "the jury did their job."

Rios' attorney, Michael Nichola, said she is "taking it in stride."

"It's all part of the process," he said.

Rios went back to the Osceola County Jail, where she will remain on no bond until the re-trial.

Rios is not accused of attacking Roopnarine herself, but faces charges of first-degree murder and armed burglary for her alleged role in his killing.

Rios, now 19, was 17 at the time of Roopnarine's death. She ran away from her father's home and was staying with Juan Muriel and David Damus, roommates who were 20 at the time.

Muriel and Damus needed rent money and saw that Roopnarine, whom Rios met on Facebook about a year earlier, had posted about a $10,000 car insurance settlement he got after a crash.

Konrad Schafer, a 15-year-old friend of Damus', took over Rios' social-media account and started messaging Roopnarine as Rios. Roopnarine agreed to meet Rios at his home and pay her for sex.

The group allegedly planned to rob Roopnarine, prosecutors have said. Schafer had a .45 Hi-Point rifle, which he had convinced his father to buy him by saying he was having problems with people in their neighborhood.

Schafer had used that rifle to shoot and kill 17-year-old David Guerrero, who was walking to a bus stop, and to shoot at countless homes and cars in Osceola County during nightly drive-bys.

The night of July 3, 2013, he gave Damus the rifle. Muriel, who drove an Buick SUV belonging to Schafer's father to Roopnarine's house, allegedly gave Schafer his own smaller gun to use in the robbery.

Roopnarine spent the last day of his life driving down to Miami with his father to buy a new car with his settlement money. They picked out a Scion. Roopnarine's father returned to his home in Okeechobee, and Roopnarine drove his new car to Poinciana.

When he got home, his mother greeted him and left to go pick her sister up at Orlando International Airport.

After she left, prosecutors say, Rios arrived at the home.

Rios is accused of opening the door for Schafer and Damus. Once inside, the two started yelling at Roopnarine, demanding his money.

Roopnarine said he only had $300. Schafer and Damus thought he had more, and kept threatening him. Damus fired the Hi-Point rifle, shooting Roopnarine in the head.

Schafer, not convinced that Roopnarine was dead, got a large knife from the kitchen and stabbed his throat four times.

The group then took a television and two gaming consoles from the home. They contacted Muriel, who picked them up.

Schafer and Damus were both sentenced to life in prison. Muriel cooperated with prosecutors and is serving a 10-year prison sentence.

The state's case in Rios' trial relied primarily on video footage of two detectives questioning her at the Kissimmee Police Department on July 8, 2013.

In the video, which was shot over eight hours, Rios first said she knew Roopnarine but did not know anything about his death. She then admitted to hearing about the killing from Damus and Schafer, and finally said she was in the house that night.

At one point, a detective asked Rios if she knew of any plans to kill Roopnarine.

"Honestly not really," she said. "I didn't think they were going to – but I knew they were going to, because if they left him alive he would snitch all of us out."

Neither Muriel, who testified during Damus' trial, nor Schafer, whom prosecutors said would testify in Rios' case, appeared in front of the jury.

Jurors deliberated for about four hours Wednesday evening, then returned on Thursday morning.

Around 1:30 p.m., jurors told Judge Jon B. Morgan Thursday that they did not think they could reach a unanimous verdict.

Morgan told jurors to go back into the room and discuss their opinions of the case again. Jurors returned an hour later with a written statement saying they talked about the case again and could not agree on a verdict.
