Michael Madison - Ohio Death Row

Suspect in grisly East Cleveland murder in custody after Cleveland standoff

Cleveland Police and SWAT took a man in for questioning after standoff on Cleveland's east side.

They believe the 35-year old man may have information related to an East Cleveland homicide.

Early Friday morning cops were called to the scene of a body found at Shaw and Hayden in East Cleveland. The body was found in a bag, next to a car in a garage, behind an apartment building.

"Inside we did recover a body and a this point it was wrapped and because of the state of decomposition we are not certain if it is male or female at this point," said Detective Scott Gardner, East Cleveland Police.

"Where we found the body, it was right next to the car that he was driving," said Chief Ralph Spotts.

"It's just a shame that someone's child in that bag. Some mother some where it don't matter if they're 90 or 100 -- that's somebody's baby in that bag," said Gloria Hopkins.

Police connected the car to a Michael Madison who lives in the same neighborhood where the body was located.

Madison was tracked him to his mother's house. She lives at the corner of E. 197 and Chickasaw in Cleveland -- where the standoff took place Friday afternoon.

Police broke down the door and Madison was arrested without incident.

The East Cleveland victim has not been identified.

Two more bodies found in East Cleveland

Two more dead bodies were found here Saturday, close to where the body of a woman was discovered the day before.

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said it is a believed that a 35-year-old arrested Friday night after a two-hour standoff in Cleveland on Chickasaw Avenue is responsible for the deaths. The man was in East Cleveland Jail Saturday night. He has not been charged.

A search of vacant lots and homes in the area of Ardenhall Avenue ended around 11 p.m. as authorities, led by East Cleveland police, try to determine if there are more dead bodies. It is to resume at noon today.

Norton said each woman was black. They were wrapped in four or five plastic bags. It is estimated all were killed within the last 10 days. He said identifications have not been made and the cause of death has not been determined in any instance.

The first woman was found in a carport Friday morning near the corner of Hayden and Shaw avenues. Norton described the woman as 5'3, 110 pounds.

The other two women were found Saturday afternoon.

One was discovered in a lot heavy with weeds about 150 feet from the carport. The mayor said that woman had a tattoo of a pink flower with green leaves on her left thigh.

The third woman was found in the basement of a home on East 139th Street, adjacent to the weedy lot. The house is vacant. Norton said it appeared the woman may have been thrown through a window into the basement.

The third woman was wearing a purple top, with a leopard pattern.

"I don't know if there are anymore bodies out there," Norton said. "It is all tying back to the same guy.

East Cleveland police, the FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office and Cleveland police are involved in the investigation. The law enforcement personnel is being aided dogs trained to find cadavers.

People who live in the area said the arrested man has been seen in the neighborhood talking aggressively to women in the area.

Ohio Bodies Find Suspect 'Fascinated' By Killer

Police investigating the grim discovery in Ohio of three bodies wrapped in plastic bags say a 35-year-old suspect may have been fascinated with serial killer Anthony Sowell.

During police interviews, convicted sex offender Michael Madison led police to believe he may have been influenced by Sowell.

"He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence," said East Cleveland mayor Gary Norton.

Sowell is currently in prison awaiting the death penalty for murdering 11 women before hiding their remains around his Cleveland home.

Identified in press reports as the Cleveland Strangler, he has appealed for his sentence to be commuted to life in prison on the basis he did not receive a fair trial.

Mr Norton said police were continuing their search, possibly for more bodies, at the property where the three bodies, all female, were found 150 metres apart.

Police said the first body was found on Friday in a garage and two other bodies were found on Saturday - one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house.

All three are believed to have been killed in the last six to 10 days.

Volunteers Search Vacant Homes in East Cleveland

There may be an additional one to two more bodies to find in the East Cleveland area where three women have already been found dead, according to Chief Ralph Spotts.

Michael Madison, 35, has been arrested in connection with the three murders. Police Chief Ralph Spotts said there may be one or two more victims based on information Madison gave police.

“Just made us think there is a little more to it, and we want to be sure to do the best we can. So we’re going to search as many of the areas, surrounding areas as we can,” Chief Spotts said.

Sunday, BCI and police focused on an empty lot at Hayden and Shaw Avenues. The lot is directly left of Madison’s apartment.

Dozens of men, women and children searched vacant and abandoned houses near the area of Hayden and Shaw Avenues as well. East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said this type of community effort to help police has never happened before.

“We can cover a larger area with community volunteers, so we want to get eyes and ears inside these vacant and abandoned houses and see what’s going on and see if there is any additional thing we need to pay attention to,” Mayor Norton said.

Fox 8 News reporter Maria Scali asked Chief Spotts if they are dealing with a serial killer.

“It’s how you define serial killer. But, we feel he’s responsible for at least three murders, so far,“ Chief Spotts said.

Nathenia Crosby knows the suspect as “Ivan” and didn’t like the 35-year-old man’s interest in teenage girls.

“I said, ‘Ivan, nothing better not happen to her. She better make it home at a decent time. Nothing better not happen to my daughter, or the last one she was with was you,” Crosby added.

Crosby said Madison was at her house for July 4th festivities and heard him saying how he admired Anthony Sowell.

The volunteers searched inside and outside the abandoned houses, through deplorable conditions, not knowing what they might find.

The searchers were told to pay special attention to any garbage bags. In all three cases, police said the women were found in a fetal position wrapped in garbage bags.

Apyrl Clark explained why she joined the search.

“Helping — this could be my daughter, my niece, my nephew. It could be anyone of us,” she said.

The plan was to cover four streets, but police said the searchers covered many more and looked through hundreds of vacant and abandoned houses.

Police believe the women were likely killed in the last 6 to 10 days.

Ages and identities have not been released.

Officials said it is too early to determine how the women died. On Sunday, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said because of the state of decomposition, identification and cause of death could take several days.

Police tape outside a garage in East Cleveland, Ohio. A woman's body was found inside. Two other victims were also discovered in the neighborhood.

Search For More Murder Victims Ends In Cleveland

The search for more more bodies ended late Sunday in a Cleveland suburb where over the weekend the remains of three women were found wrapped in plastic.

Meanwhile, as The Plain Dealer writes, the man who authorities allege murdered the women is due in court Monday. Michael Madison, a 35-year-old registered sex offender who served a 4-year prison term in the past decade after being convicted for attempted rape, "is expected to be charged today in connection with the deaths," the newspaper says.

As we reported Sunday, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton says Madison may have been influenced by the crimes of serial killer Anthony Sowell, who was sentenced to death in 2011 for killing 11 women and then hiding their remains around his Cleveland home.

This horrible sort of news is all too familiar to the people of Cleveland, the Plain Dealer notes:

"For the second time in three months and the third time in four years, evidence of haunting crimes against women sprouted in one of Greater Cleveland's inner-city neighborhoods. ...

"It was a scene familiar for its landscape of abandoned homes, overgrown weeds and television cameras. The world was watching, as it did in May, when three young women were rescued from a Cleveland home after being missing for nearly a decade. Sunday's scene, where three dead women were found wrapped in plastic bags, also brought reminders of Anthony Sowell, a serial killer from Cleveland's recent past."

As our colleagues at WCPN put it, "Northeast Ohio is back in the national spotlight again with another possible serial killing."

    3 bodies found; suspect charged

Judge orders Michael Madison held on $6M bond

Police filed aggravated murder and kidnapping charges Monday against a man arrested after the discovery of three women's bodies wrapped in plastic.

A Cuyahoga County judge ordered Michael Madison, 35, held on $6 million bond during his arraignment Monday.

While authorities did not find more bodies Sunday, as was initially feared, East Cleveland police Chief Ralph Spotts said workers continue to search.

"This is an ongoing investigation. We are nowhere near done," he said.

The bodies were found within a few blocks from each other in East Cleveland over the weekend. Madison, who is accused of three counts of aggravated murder and three counts of kidnapping, may have been inspired by a local serial killer, officials said.

Madison leased the garage where one of the bodies was found, according to authorities.

"We are dealing with a sick individual, and we have reason to believe that there might be more victims," East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton told CNN.

Spotts told CNN affiliate WEWS over the weekend that investigators received "a lot of information" from interviews with Madison and residents.

The mayor said Madison was "influenced" by serial killer Anthony Sowell, who was convicted of killing 11 women in the same Ohio county, Cuyahoga. Sowell was sentenced to death in 2011.

"Unfortunately, this is a sick individual who appears to have been influenced by another sick individual," Norton said. "If he had been out for one more hour, there's no telling what would have happened."

While the three bodies were badly decomposed, authorities were able to identify one: Angela Deskins, 38, of Cleveland.

It could take days before officials can determine their identities and causes of death, Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Thomas Gilson said Monday.

The first victim was found Friday in the garage leased by Madison. She was naked with signs of trauma, police said.

Two other bodies were found Saturday -- one in an abandoned house, the other in a nearby field. One of those women was wearing a green hoodie, and the other was wearing a leopard-print leotard.

All three victims appear to be young black women. Their bodies were wrapped in plastic garbage bags and taped up, authorities said.

Norton, the city's mayor, believes the killings happened over a 10-day period and that the same assailant is responsible.

"One of the things that makes us believe it's the same suspect is the way that they were all wrapped ... and the same concealment of each of the victims," he said.

    Who is the suspect?

The trail that led to Madison's arrest began with a foul odor coming from the garage he leased, East Cleveland police Detective Sgt. Scott Gardner said. That's where police found the first body.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Madison's apartment Friday and found "additional evidence of decomposition" there, Gardner said.

Police later found Madison at his mother's house in nearby Cleveland. After a standoff, he was taken into custody.

When detectives returned to Madison's neighborhood to scour for evidence Saturday, they found the two bodies in the field and the abandoned house.

According to police, Madison was convicted of attempted rape in 2001 and is a registered sex offender.

CNN could not immediately reach a representative for Madison.

Shaeaun Child, a neighbor who tipped police off about the foul smell in the garage, told CNN he knows Madison. He said the two once argued over a blocked driveway.

"From what I know, he was an OK person when I first met him. And then from there, he actually, he had a lot of conflicts with different girls that he knew," Child said. "When he real upset with someone, he get real loud. You could hear him like two blocks away."

    Search for more bodies

About 100 volunteers went house to house Sunday "to see if there's anything else out there that police need to know about," the mayor said. Cadaver dogs also assisted in the search.

The police chief said anything is possible.

Officials identify second East Cleveland murder victim

Authorities have identified the second of three murder victims found dumped in plastic garbage bags in an East Cleveland neighborhood as 28-year-old Shetisha Sheeley, the city's mayor said on Tuesday.

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said the body of Sheeley, a resident of Cleveland, was discovered Saturday in a weeded lot near two other bodies. East Cleveland is a low-income city of about 27,000 people outside Cleveland.

Authorities on Monday confirmed the identity of the first victim as Angela Deskins, 38, also of Cleveland.

Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Tom Gilson said his office made a preliminary identification, based on Sheeley's multiple tattoos, which was confirmed with a fingerprint match.

The name of a third victim has not yet been released. The third woman was found after neighbors complained of a strong, pungent smell coming from a garage behind an apartment building.

The identification of the third victim as well as the cause of death of all three victims may take "a couple of days" due to the severe decomposition of the bodies, according to Gilson.

An arrest was made in the case on Friday. Michael Madison, 35, faces three counts each of kidnapping and aggravated murder, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of death. He is being held on $6 million bond. No hearings have been scheduled in the case.

According to court records, he is a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to attempted rape in 2002.

Madison was arrested at his mother's home, hours after the first body was discovered.

The bodies, two of which were found by trained cadaver-smelling dogs, were located in a garage, the basement of a building and in a weeded lot around the building where Madison lived.

During a police interview, Madison mentioned the name of Cleveland serial killer, Anthony Sowell, who was convicted of murder in the deaths of 11 women, according to Norton. Their bodies were found wrapped in garbage bags in and around his home in 2009.

"These people that are victims have stories, they have lives and they have loved ones," Norton said.

Madison was transferred on Tuesday to the Cuyahoga County jail, where Ariel Castro, 53, is being held. Castro is charged with nearly 1,000 criminal counts, including murder, rape and kidnapping, in the disappearance and the decade-long captivity of three women.

East Cleveland murder victims have been identified

All three victims of accused killer Michael Madison have been identified reports 19 Action News, July 23.

Angela Deskins, 38, Shetisha Sheeley, 28, Shirellda Terry, 18, have all been identified as the bodies found in East Cleveland last week. All three victims are believed to have been dead for six to 10 days when they were found.

Angela Deskins had been missing since June 7. Her body was found in an abandoned house on Saturday. In a statement released today, her family asked for privacy but also gave a glimpse as to who Angela was:

"Angela Deskins was a beautiful, sweet, kindhearted woman. She was raised in Novelty, Ohio, by her father Robert Deskins and her step-mother Linda Deskins. Everyone who knew her loved her. She was a wonderful daughter, sister and aunt who truly cared about her family and friends. She is loved so much and will be missed by everyone who knew her."

Terry was last seen July 10 when she left her job at East Clark Elementary School . Her family had held out hope that she was not one of the victims found in East Cleveland. Shirellda Terry, was found on Friday in a garage. She was described as a friendly young woman who never missed Bible study or church service. Her father, Van Terry wants Michael Madison to feel the pain he is feeling: “I don't want him to get the death penalty to be honest with you. Release him inside the (prison) population and let him deal with it every day of his life. That's what I think; I think he should suffer like we suffered.”

Shetisha Sheeley's body was found in a field near an abandoned house, also on Saturday. Shetisha had been missing since September, however family became even more concerned when she did not come to her brothers funeral. Family says the two were close. Dontel was killed when he was a victim of a home invasion in December.

Shetisha's mother said she had a feeling her daughter was on of Madison's victims based on the descriptions of tattoo's that were released: “They kept saying about the Lil’ Wayne tattoo, and the tattoo that was on her leg and tattoo on her neck. I knew it was my daughter,”

Michael Madison, 35, is a registered sex offender. He has reportedly confessed to one of the murders. He is currently behind bars, charged with kidnapping and aggravated murder. He is being held on a $6M bond.

"Three individuals who were minding their own business were killed senselessly by an individual with no regard for human life," said Mayor Gary Norton in a press conference Monday "As a community we are dealing with the tragedy, we are healing and we are strong."

"We feel there may be more to this. This is an ongoing investigation. We're no where near done." said East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts.

Investigators have not yet released a cause of death for any of the victims.

Dad of third East Cleveland murder victim Shirellda Terry thinks his daughter’s killer should suffer

Van Terry stopped by the site Tuesday afternoon along the St. Clair Avenue where volunteers have been handing out fliers with his daughter’s picture on it.

Shirellda Terry, 18, disappeared after last being seen in this block around 1:30 p.m. July 10 as she made her way home early from work.

Terry went to see his mother who had been handing out the fliers hoping to find her granddaughter.

“Ride with me,” he asked her. The news he had to share was the worst any parent could ever share: His daughter was gone.

Terry learned Tuesday that the third body found over the weekend in East Cleveland was his daughter.

“It's final,” he said coming to grips with what he’d just been told. “The tears have poured, the pain is there and it's final - right now we just got to move to the next step."

When news broke over the weekend of the bodies found in East Cleveland Shirellda Terry’s family held out hope that she wasn’t one of the victims, that she would somehow come home.

Michael Madison, 35, has been charged with the three deaths and sits behind bars on $6 million bond. Terry said he hopes if he’s convicted, that’s where he stays for the rest of his life.

“I don't want him to get the death penalty to be honest with you. Release him inside the (prison) population and let him deal with it every day of his life. That's what I think; I think he should suffer like we suffered,” Terry said.

Shirellda Terry was a teen who loved books, her family said. She was very religious, finding great joy in both Bible study and praise dancing.

"Right now, baby go ahead and do your prayer dance for the lord himself - you up there with him - do your dance for him," Terry said in a message to his daughter. “I know that’s who she’s dancing for right now, the lord.”
