Calif. death & abduction: Friend James DiMaggio becomes suspect

James Lee DiMaggio is now a suspect in the death of Christina Anderson, the abduction of her 16-year-old daughter and the possible death or abduction of her 8-year old son.
Anderson's body was found in DiMaggio's burning home east of San Diego, near the dead body of a child who may be Ethan Anderson.

Brett Anderson, who flew from Tennessee to San Diego on Tuesday, pleaded with DiMaggio, 40, to release his daughter, Hannah, saying, "You've taken everything else."

"Jim, I can't fathom what you were thinking. The damage is done," he said outside San Diego County Sheriff's Department headquarters after being interviewed by investigators.

DiMaggio was wanted on suspicion of murder and arson in a search that began in Southern California and spread to Mexico and neighboring states. Authorities said he may be headed to Texas or Canada.

"Hannah, we all love you very much. If you have a chance, you take it. You run. You'll be found," Brett Anderson said, declining to take questions after reading a short statement.

On Sunday night, authorities found the body of Christina Anderson, 42, near a dead dog when they extinguished flames at DiMaggio's rural home. The child's body was found later as they sifted through rubble in Boulevard, a remote hamlet 65 miles east of San Diego on the U.S.-Mexico border.

An autopsy on the child was performed Tuesday but no positive identification was made, said sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

"It is a possibility that it's Ethan," he said. "Right now we just don't know. And we're praying that it isn't Ethan."

Sheriff's investigators said Christina Anderson was close platonic friends with DiMaggio. The suspect was very close with Brett Anderson and like an uncle to his two children, Giannantonio said.

Christina Anderson's father, Christopher Saincome, said he had seen DiMaggio two or three times and described him as a good friend of his son-in-law.

Brett Anderson joined hundreds of family friends and neighbors at a candlelight vigil in the parking lot of El Capitan High School in Lakeside, an east San Diego suburb of 54,000 people, where Hannah was about to start her junior year. Pink paper cups stuffed between holes in the fence read, "Pray Hannah," and dozens of white, powder blue and pink balloons lifted into the air.

Hannah Anderson was a gymnast on her high school team who liked to dance and made friends easily.

"You would never see her without a smile on her face," said Marlee Friszell, 16, who attended Hannah's birthday party last week.

Ethan Anderson liked to play football and baseball and go fishing, said Cyrus Dawn, 17, a longtime neighbor.

Brett and Christina Anderson recently separated, Dawn said. Investigators called Brett Anderson her ex-husband, but he said they were still married.

An Amber Alert alerted freeway motorists, television viewers and cellphone subscribers to a blue Nissan Versa with California license plates that DiMaggio was believed to be driving. The FBI was participating in the investigation.

Monday marked the first time cellphone users were notified of a statewide Amber Alert in California through their phones. The alert system, which was introduced in December, sends messages automatically, based on the phone's location.

Amber Alerts expand to Oregon, Washington in hunt for suspected California killer, abductor

Amber Alerts expanded to Oregon and Washington as authorities searched for a Southern California man suspected of abducting a 16-year-old girl and wanted in the death of the girl's mother and possibly her 8-year-old brother.

Oregon State Police said there was a possible sighting of James Lee DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa in northeast California near Alturas on Wednesday, followed by another about 50 miles along the same highway near Lakeview, in south-central Oregon.

Investigators have said DiMaggio may be headed to Texas or Canada with 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and possibly her 8-year-old brother, Ethan, though investigators said a charred body discovered along with the mother could be the boy.

Also Wednesday, a friend of Hannah Anderson said DiMaggio told Hannah he had a crush on her and would date her if they were the same age.

DiMaggio explained that he didn't want the girls to think he was weird in an effort to defend himself after noticing they exchanged glances, 15-year-old Marissa Chavez said. She said he spoke while driving them home from a high school gymnastics meet a couple months ago.

Hannah Anderson asked Chavez to join her from then on whenever DiMaggio, 40, drove her to meets.

"She was a little creeped out by it. She didn't want to be alone with him," Chavez said.

DiMaggio was like an uncle to Hannah and 8-year-old Ethan. He was very close with their parents for years.

On Sunday night, authorities found the body of 42-year-old Christina Anderson when they extinguished flames at DiMaggio's rural home. A child's body was found as they sifted through rubble in Boulevard, a tiny town 65 miles east of San Diego on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The child's body has not been identified but it may be Ethan's, sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said late Tuesday.

Christina Anderson's father, Christopher Saincome, said Wednesday that his daughter visited DiMaggio's home last weekend to say goodbye before he moved to Texas. DiMaggio, who works as a telecommunications technician at The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, was a regular presence at the Anderson family apartment in Lakeside, a suburb of 54,000 people.

"He must have had this planned," Saincome said.

Saincome said nothing seemed amiss when he called his daughter at work Friday to let her know she didn't call on his birthday. Anderson, a medical assistant, said she would call back that night but never did.

Investigators had no evidence that the relationship between DiMaggio and the missing girl was more than friendly.

"We're not looking into that directly at this point," Giannantonio said.

DiMaggio is wanted on suspicion of murder and arson in a search that began in Southern California and spread to Mexico and neighboring states.

DiMaggio's sister, Lora Robinson, told U-T San Diego that the allegations against her brother were "completely out of character." She said he spent four years in the Navy, left military service to care for her after their mother died of cancer and volunteered rescuing animals.

"He is the kindest person in the world," Robinson said.

She told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she believed her brother was also a victim of foul play, along with the Andersons.

"He tried to take care of those kids, and he took care of them as if they were his own," Robinson said.

James Lee DiMaggio, Murder-Abduction Suspect, May Be Armed With Explosives

LAKESIDE, Calif. — A man suspected of abducting a 16-year-old girl after setting his house ablaze with the girl's mother and possibly her younger brother inside may have booby-trapped his car with homemade explosives, police said Thursday as a search expanded to four states, Mexico and Canada.

Meanwhile, police said an "unusual infatuation" with the teenager might have driven suspect James Lee DiMaggio, 40, to flee with her from his burned home on the California-Mexico border.

"That is kind of a working theory, that it may be something of a motivator," San Diego County Sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser said. "It's definitely something that we're looking at."

Evidence found in the rubble of the home suggested that DiMaggio may have fled with explosives, Fraser said, declining to elaborate on what was discovered. Investigators worried that DiMaggio might abandon his blue Nissan Versa after rigging it to explode.

"In the event that someone comes across the car, they need to use caution," Fraser said.

On Sunday night, authorities found the body of 44-year-old Christina Anderson when they extinguished flames at DiMaggio's rural home. A child's body also was discovered as they sifted through rubble in Boulevard, a tiny town 65 miles east of San Diego.

The body may be that of 8-year-old Ethan Anderson. Fraser said it could take several days to identify the badly burned remains. Investigators were unable to extract DNA.

DiMaggio told 16-year-old Hannah Anderson a couple months ago he had a crush on her and would date her if they were the same age, said Marissa Chavez, 15, a friend who witnessed the remarks when DiMaggio was driving them home from a gymnastics competition.

"She was a little creeped out by it. She didn't want to be alone with him," Chavez said.

DiMaggio is wanted on suspicion of murder and arson in a search that began in California and spread to Oregon, Washington, Nevada, British Columbia and Mexico's Baja California state. An additional eight FBI agents were assigned to a command post at San Diego sheriff's headquarters, as state and local law enforcement agencies were on alert.

Oregon State Police fielded more than 130 tips after authorities issued an Amber Alert for DiMaggio and his car with California license plates. A possible sighting was reported in northeast California near Alturas Wednesday afternoon, followed by another about 50 miles along the same highway near Lakeview, in south-central Oregon.

Fraser, whose office had hundreds of leads on DiMaggio's whereabouts, said the Oregon tip appeared "very credible"

"We're taking it very seriously," he said.

Washington State Patrol responded to reports of sightings on Interstate 5, including the Tacoma area, Vancouver and at least one near Bremerton, said Sgt. Jason Hicks.

Messages seeking DiMaggio and the Anderson children appeared on digital billboards and freeway signs throughout the West, said Bob Hoever, director of special programs for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Loud tones beeped on mobile phones in areas covered by the Amber Alerts.

In Mexico, airports, bus and taxi companies and law enforcement agencies were on the lookout, said Alfredo Arenas, international liaison for the Baja California state police.

"This is a pretty much an all-hands-on-deck effort. It's huge," Fraser said.

DiMaggio, a telecommunications technician at The Scripps Research Institute, was like an uncle to Hannah and Ethan Anderson. He was close to their parents for years.

Dawn MacNabb, whose son, Alan, was close friends with Hannah, said Hannah told her son Friday that the Andersons were going to visit DiMaggio at his house before he moved.

"She told him Jim was depressed, that it was his last weekend," MacNabb.

Christina Anderson's father, Christopher Saincome, said his daughter visited DiMaggio's home to say goodbye before he moved to Texas.

MacNabb said DiMaggio occasionally took Hannah and her friends to his home and that she felt uncomfortable enough to warn Christina Anderson.

"She really trusted him," MacNabb said. "I have been concerned for a while. It's not normal behavior."

Car found in Amber Alert manhunt

A car matching the description of one linked by police to California Amber Alert suspect James DiMaggio has been found in a remote area of Idaho, authorities told CNN's Miguel Marquez on Friday.

The vehicle was located in the remote River of No Return Wilderness area in Cascade, Idaho, Ada County sheriff's spokeswoman Andrea Dearden said.

A search of DiMaggio's burned-down house has led law enforcement to this conclusion: "We don't hold anything past this person," as one official put it.

Authorities found the body of Christina Anderson in DiMaggio's San Diego-area home, and a second body likely to be her 8-year-old son, Ethan. The whereabouts of DiMaggio, 40, and 16-year-old Hannah Anderson remain unknown.

Details of what investigators have uncovered at the scene remain under wraps, but it has led authorities to warn that the suspect's car may be rigged with explosives.

"We have a heightened concern that's based on the evidence we have been collecting at the scene all week long," San Diego Sheriff's Department Capt. Duncan Fraser told CNN Friday.

"We think that he's capable of anything at this point," he said.

Based on what the sheriff's investigators have seen, there is evidence that the fire and kidnapping of Hannah was a "very well planned event," Fraser said.

Car in California missing teen case found in Idaho [Update]

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A car belonging to the suspect in the disappearance of a teenage girl in California was found in Idaho after horseback riders reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the wilderness, authorities said on Friday.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said the riders reported seeing the two in the Cascade area 70 miles northeast of Boise on Wednesday but didn't know they were being sought until seeing news reports.

The 16-year-old girl, Hannah Anderson, did not appear as if she was being held against her will, Gore said, without elaborating. Both people appeared to be healthy.

    More from AP:

A car belonging to a man suspected of killing a California woman and her young son and then fleeing with the 16-year-old daughter was found in the Idaho wilderness on Friday after a horseback rider reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the area two days earlier, authorities said.

The rider said he saw two people who matched the description of the pair near Morehead Lake, in an extremely rugged backcountry area 70 miles northeast of Boise sometime around noon Wednesday, Ada County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Andrea Dearden said.

The rider didn't report his encounter with the pair until later, after seeing news reports and realizing they were being sought.

If they're 70 miles NE of Boise, they're in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, which is confirmed by the latest AP report.

The Salmon-Challis National Forest covers over 4.3 million acres in east-central Idaho. Included within the boundaries of the Forest is 1.3 million acres of the Frank Church -- River of No Return Wilderness Area, the largest wilderness area in the Continental United States.

DiMaggio doesn't want to be found, but does he have the expertise to survive up there? Check it out on Google Earth. That's some seriously rugged terrain. Overnight temperatures in Boise are predicted to be in the low 70s F. In the higher altitudes they'll likely be in the 50s. DiMaggio knows he has nothing to live for. It's a damned shame he's taking that girl along on what looks like a suicide mission. Does she not know the fate of her family, and think she's only going on a camping trip?

So many psychos, so little sodium pentothal.

Sheriff: Burned body ID'd as missing California boy

A child's body found in a burning house in Southern California is an 8-year-old boy whose mother was killed and whose sister is believed to have been abducted by a family friend, a sheriff's officials said Friday.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said its crime laboratory has identified the body as 8-year-old Ethan Anderson.

A brief statement Friday night said that investigators identified the charred body through DNA extracted from the boy's bone marrow.

The body was found Sunday along with the body of the boy's mother Christina Anderson, who investigators say was murdered.
