Daniel Rodriguez Sentenced in 2013 RI Double Slaying

Amber Alert issued after double homicide in RI

JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) — State police say a suspect in a double homicide has snatched a 2-year-old boy from a Rhode Island home and is on the run.

An Amber Alert has been issued for Isaiah Perez, who was discovered missing from a Johnston home at about 5:20 a.m. Sunday.

    Malcolm Crowell

Authorities are looking for 22-year-old Malcolm Crowell of Providence. They say he should be considered armed and dangerous. They believe he has Isaiah.

No description of his vehicle was immediately available.

WPRI-TV reports that Isaih lived with the two people who were found dead.

Police say Crowell had a link to the boy, but they wouldn't elaborate.

Johnston is a town of about 30,000 people less than 10 miles from Providence.

RI police arrest 2 in double homicide, boy missing

JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) -- Two men were arrested in a double homicide and the abduction of a 2-year-old boy from a Rhode Island home, while police continued Sunday to search "any place and every place" for the child, local police said.

The search for the boy, Isaiah Perez, began after two bodies were discovered about 5:20 a.m. at a home in Johnston, a town of 30,000 residents less than 10 miles from Providence.

Johnston Deputy Police Chief Daniel Parrillo said investigators believe the two were killed between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. and the boy was taken from the home. The names of the two dead were not immediately released.

By the afternoon, Malcolm Crowell, 22, was arrested in Fall River, Mass., and Daniel Rodriguez, 27 or 28, was arrested that evening in Providence, Parrillo said. Both suspects are from Providence, but Parillo would not say why police suspect the two or how they are related to each other or to the victims.

Investigators were working to determine the relationships among the boy, his abductor and the two homicide victims. Parrillo said it was unclear whether the boy's abductor was living in the home, was a guest or was uninvited.

"What he was doing there, we have no idea," Parrillo said earlier in the day. "We don't believe the child was harmed, and we're just hoping that he will be safely returned."

Authorities also were trying to obtain a photograph of the child to help with the search.

When the boy went missing, a nationwide Amber Alert was issued that identified the child and also named Crowell as a suspect.

Massachusetts State Police spokesman Dave Procopio initially said Crowell was captured in Fall River. But Procopio later backtracked and would only say he was told the man in custody wasn't involved in the child's disappearance. Parrillo said Sunday evening that he couldn't explain the confusion among Massachusetts State Police surrounding Crowell's status as a suspect.

Missing toddler found in Rhode Island

A 2-year-old boy missing in Rhode Island has been found wandering the streets of Providence, according to Johnston Police Deputy Chief Daniel Parillo.

Authorities had issued an Amber Alert for Isaih Perez on Sunday morning.

The toddler was taken to a hospital to be checked out, but he appeared to be in good health, Parillo said.

Asked whether he had any idea how Isaih got where he was, Parillo said he did not.

"A patrol man found him while on patrol just walking on the sidewalk. We don't know he was dropped off, if he was left off there, we don't have any particulars at this time," he said.

Earlier, Parrillo said that two men had been taken into police custody in connection with the kidnapping of the 2-year-old boy and a double homicide.

The toddler was not with either man when police apprehended them.

Authorities had said they believe Malcolm Crowell, 22, fled the scene of the homicide in Johnston, taking Isaih with him.

Crowell was found by police in Fall River following a tip related to an Amber Alert for the boy.

Authorities identified Daniel Rodriguez as a second suspect during their investigation, and he was taken into custody by police in Providence early Sunday evening, Parillo said.

Charges are expected to be filed Monday.

The relationship between the suspects and the child is unknown, Parrillo said. The victims of the double homicide have not been identified.

Perez lived in the home where the double homicide occurred, CNN affiliate WPRI reported

Rodriguez pleads guilty in Johnston double murder, kidnapping

    By Daniel Kittredge
    Johnston Sun Rise

A Johnston man has been sentenced to consecutive life sentences plus an additional 50 years after pleading guilty in an August 2013 double murder and kidnapping.

Daniel Rodriguez, 28, entered the plea before Justice Robert D. Krause in Superior Court, the office of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced Thursday. He was charged in the murder of Evelyn Burgos and Vanessa Perez, and with the kidnapping of two-year-old Isaiah Perez.

“Daniel Rodriguez is a brutal, violent killer ... No one can imagine the horrors the three children, who were in the room at the time of the murders, experienced as they saw Evelyn and Vanessa brutally shot and killed, and the bravery it took for AJ, Evelyn’s eight-year-old son, to call E-911 and provide critical information to the police that led to the capture of Rodriguez and the safe return of his two-year-old brother Isaiah,” said Kilmartin in a statement. “The swift apprehension of Rodriguez was the result of the coordinated response by the Johnston Police Department, the Rhode Island State Police, Providence Police and many other police departments who worked together to identify and apprehend the shooter and safely locate the little boy.”

Police and prosecutors say that at approximately 4 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 11, 2013, Rodriguez – alias “Radio” – traveled to the Oak Tree Drive residence of Burgos, his ex-girlfriend, and her family while armed with a .357 Magnum revolver. He is then said to have entered the home through a rear window and confronted Burgos and Perez in a child’s bedroom. Also in the room were AJ, Isaiah and three-year-old Janiyah Crowell, Perez’s daughter.

An argument ensued, and Rodriguez shot Perez three times before delivering a single, fatal shot to Burgos, according to the attorney general’s statement. He then fled the home with Isaiah and his firearm.

An hour later, AJ dialed E-911, and Johnston police responded to the scene. An effort to locate the shooter and Isaiah began immediately, with Johnston, Providence, East Providence and Fall River police working with Massachusetts and Rhode Island state police and numerous other agencies.

Rodriguez was arrested at approximately 4:30 p.m. the same day at the Elmhurst Extended Care facility in Providence when his uncle, Providence Police Officer Miguel Mena-Torres, confronted him.

Shortly after 8 p.m. that night, Providence Police Officer Daniel Sirignano – who had been involved in the arrest of Rodriguez – observed a young boy wearing only a diaper walking down Sweetbriar Street unattended. The boy was picked up, and was confirmed to be Isaiah.

The lead officers from Johnston police were Maj. Frank Levesque, Detective Thomas Dwyer, Detective Anthony Sasso, Detective Joshua Heywood, Detective Christopher Decesare and Lt. Christopher Correia.

Other Providence officers who assisted were Sgt. William Dwyer, Detective Emilio Matos and Detective Teddy Michael. Rhode Island State Police Detectives Kenneth DeMarco and Matthew McGuire also assisted.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Jay Sullivan and Special Assistant Attorney General Joseph McBurney.
