    Drew Alan Friis

A Glendora man accused of stabbing two homeless men to death last week was charged with capital murder Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Prosecutors said Drew Alan Friis, 28, attacked John Anthony Welch and Warren Jay Blagrave early Thursday morning, allegedly stabbing each man more than 20 times.

A Glendora police lieutenant discovered their bodies near a carwash in the 200 block of West Route 66 after a resident reported hearing screams.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's homicide bureau helped investigate the case.

Friis was set to be arraigned in the court's Pomona branch on two counts of murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders, Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Martin Bean said in a news release.

The arraignment was continued until Oct. 3 and a public defender was appointed to the case, district attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors may seek the death penalty but will decide later whether to do so, the release said.

Friis is being held without bail.

Arraignment scheduled in Glendora double slaying

A Glendora man accused of fatally stabbing two homeless men will be back in court this week.

Drew Allen Friis, 29, will be arraigned Wednesday at Pomona Superior Court.

The District Attorney’s Office has charged him with the Aug. 15, 2013 murders of John Welch and Warren Blagrave. Friis could face the death penalty because the case comes with the special allegation of multiple murders.

Sarah Ardalani, a public information officer with the DA’s Office, said the decision hasn’t been made on whether to seek the death penalty.

The prosecution also alleged that Friis personally used a knife to commit the crimes and that he has prior convictions for grand theft and arson of structure, forest land or property.

Welch and Blagrave were killed outside a car wash in the 200 block of Route 66 on Aug. 15, 2013. Friends said the 52-year-old men had been spending the nights there.

Detective Ray Lugo of the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said Friis, who knew the men, allegedly admitted to stabbing the two while they were asleep.

“He had been upset with one of the victims but he didn’t say why,” Lugo said.

He allegedly claimed he was egged on by others to stab Welch and Blagrave.

“But that has been unsubstantiated,” Lugo said.

According to the detective, Blagrave had 25 stab wounds and Welch had 20.

Lugo said someone heard the screams and flagged down a Glendora police lieutenant.

Officers discovered the two bodies. One of the victims had collapsed on the sidewalk.

Friis’ arraignment has been continued several times.

He is being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles

Glendora man pleads not guilty in fatal 2013 stabbing of two homeless men

GLENDORA - A man accused of brutally stabbing two homeless men to death as they slept at a Glendora Car wash last year pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder charges in Pomona Superior Court, prosecutors said.

Drew Alan Friis, 29, of Glendora potentially faces the death penalty if convicted as charged of the Aug. 15, 2013, slayings of John “Little John” Welch and Warren Blagrave, both 52, at a car wash in the 200 block of Route 66, where they has been spending the night in the weeks leading up to their deaths.

Prosecutors are yet to decide whether to seek the death penalty in the case, or a life sentence without the possibility of parole, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s officials said in a written statement. In addition to two counts of murder, officials allege the special circumstance of multiple murders, as well as the special allegation that he personally used a knife in the killings.

Investigators arrested Friis the same day the killings occurred. Friis said he was upset with one of the victims, but did not tell officials why, Lt. Ray Lugo of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said earlier this year.

Blagrave suffered more than 25 stab wounds, officials said. Welch was stabbed more than 20 times.

Friis is scheduled to return to court Feb. 20 for a preliminary hearing, officials said. In the meantime, he is being held without bail.
