ORLANDO -- A triple murder suspect is locked up in Orange County, hours after an arrest warrant was issued.

Detectives said LaRunne Richardson killed a woman and two children March 11 at the Misty Oaks Apartments, and then set it on fire.

Before 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Richardson turned himself into the Orange County Jail with his attorney at his side.

He is facing three counts of first-degree murder.

Richardson's attorney, Carlus Haynes, said his client claims he was the victim of an attack when the murders happened. Haynes said Richardson believes detectives should be looking for the two men who attacked him.

"He explained to them that he was injured in this incident," Haynes said. "That he arrived to the house, he was struck in the head and face and rendered unconscious and when he woke up, the place was in a blaze."

Weeks after the deadly fire, deputies named Richardson a person of interest in the case.

They didn't get an arrest warrant until Wednesday night.

Investigators said Richardson initially reported the fire, but actually killed 29-year-old Carllans Fils-Aime and her two nephews, 8-year-old Jacque Gustave and 6-year-old Samuel Gustave.

Haynes said Richardson has been emotionally stressed since the fire. He received extensive medical care and two surgeries as a result of the injuries he sustained in the fire.

"To be told that he's been a suspect in his friend's death has been very traumatizing for him,” Haynes said. “It also bothers him that some of the family members thought he was on the run and wasn't being cooperative. That was not true."

Investigators said Richardson burned the apartment after the murders to try and cover up what he did.

Richardson will face a judge at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

LaRunne Richardson: Man in Pine Hills triple-murder arson gets no bond

    By Amy Ravuk
    Orlando Sentinel

A man suspected of having a role in an apartment fire that killed a 29-year-old woman and her two young nephews in March was ordered held without bond during his first court appearance Thursday.

LaRunne Richardson is facing three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Carllans Fils-Aime, 29, Jacque Gustave, 8, and Samuel Gustave, 6.

Richardson turned himself in and was booked into the Orange County Jail early Thursday morning.

The charred remains of Fils-Aime, Jacque and Samuel were found March 11 inside a one-bedroom apartment in the Misty Oaks community.

The deaths shocked Central Florida's Haitian community.

Richardson, described as a family friend who met the victims through church, was named a person of interest in the fire several weeks after the blaze but he was not initially charged in the case.

Authorities have said Richardson escaped the fire, called 911 and was hospitalized with minor injuries. It's unclear why he was at the apartment and detectives have not said what role he allegedly played in the fire and deaths.

He was initially cooperative with investigators, but Orange County Sheriff's Office officials said in April that Richardson's story was "suspect."

A state fire marshal determined an accelerant was used to start the blaze.

Fils-Aime graduated from the University of Central Florida and worked as an office administrator for FedEx. She frequently volunteered at Impact Church, which she joined in 2009.

Fils-Aime always took her nephews to church, leaders at the church have said. The boys' mother was in Haiti at the time of the fire.

Deputies said Fils-Aime probably met Richardson at Impact Church.

Richardson accused of violence in past.

Records show Richardson lived on Lenox Boulevard near Ivey Lane and Raleigh Street in Orange County, but his defense attorney, Carlus Haynes, told the Orlando Sentinel he has been living in Jacksonville.

Haynes said his client has been in and out of the hospital.

Richardson told Haynes he was struck by an attacker and was unconscious when the apartment fire started.

Haynes also said Richardson told detectives about another potential suspect, but the investigators have only looked at him as their suspect.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show Richardson has been charged with several serious crimes in the past, including sexual assault, kidnapping and aggravated battery.

Details about those cases were not immediately available, but FDLE records show many of those charges were eventually dropped.

In 1998, Orange County deputies arrested Richardson on charges of aggravated assault and battery. Those charges were dropped.

In 2005, Richardson was arrested after his ex-girlfriend told Orange County deputies he kidnapped, raped and beat her.

At the time, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said Richardson came to the 25-year-old woman's home and began arguing with her about money. After she put her four children to bed, the fight escalated.

Richardson was accused of raping the woman several times and strangling her. However, Richardson told deputies the sex was consensual.

Deputies said Richardson forced the woman into a car and drove her around for several hours, leaving her children home alone.

Records do not indicate Richardson was convicted in the case.

That same year, a woman sought a domestic violence injunction against Richardson. The same woman sought another injunction against him in 2006.

Family hopes for justice after alleged killer ruled incompetent to stand trial

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Eight months after a woman and her two nephews were allegedly murdered in a Pine Hills apartment their suspected killer is no longer in jail.

Instead Larunne Richardson is in a mental facility.

“When they told me he’s mentally handicapped I told them that was an act. It’s not true. He doesn’t want to go to trial,” said the victim's brother, Vanel Fils-Aime.

Fils-Aime’s sister was killed in a fire at the Misty Oaks apartment complex, along with his 8-year-old and 6-year-old nephews last March.

Investigators said the fire was intentionally set, and charged Richardson with arson and first-degree murder.

Since then, prosecutors said Richardson’s been ruled incompetent to stand trial.

“It worries me. But at the same time, like I told my family, some way, somehow, you know, we’re going to get a trial,” Fils-Aime said.

Richardson turned himself in in June.

His attorney said Richardson suffered injuries in the fire that affect his speech.

WFTV’s legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said the ruling doesn’t mean Richardson is off the hook.

“He will go to a state mental institution until such time the doctors deem him competent to stand trial,” Sheaffer said.

The victims’ family hopes justice delayed doesn’t mean justice denied.

The state attorney’s office said the murder suspect will eventually be re-evaluated to determine whether they can proceed.
