Nikko Allen Jenkins - Nebraska Death Row

    Nikko Jenkins

Jenkins Now Also Charged With Four Murders

Nikko Jenkins has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Andrea Kruger, Curtis Bradford, Juan Uribe-Pena and Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz.

"Jenkins was an indiscriminate killer since being released from prison on July 30th," said Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer, who added during Wednesday's news conference that law enforcement continues to look at other individuals who may have been involved in the murders.

The bodies of 26-year-old Juan Uribe-Pena and 29-year-old Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz were found in a pickup in Spring Lake Park near 18th and F streets on August 11th; 22-year-old Curtis Bradford was found near 18th and Clark on August 19th and 33-year-old Andrea Kruger was found at North 168th and Fort streets on August 21st. All had been shot to death.

Chief Schmaderer said Omaha police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Department worked together to connect the cases. Sheriff Tim Dunning said evidence from each murder connects the cases to Jenkins.

Schmaderer added that while some of the murders were random in nature, others were not. He said he could not say why the victims were killed since the investigation into the possible involvement of others is ongoing. Officials said Jenkins and Bradford knew one another and may have done time together in prison. The chief added that Jenkins is a suspect in other crimes, but did not elaborate further.

Jenkins is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charges Thursday afternoon.

A judge had set bond at 10 percent of $500,000 on Tuesday after the 26-year-old Jenkins was charged with making terroristic threats and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. His mother, Laurie, and sister, Melonie, also appeared in court Tuesday to face tampering charges. Laurie's bond was set at $150,000 while Melonie's was set at $250,000.

Jenkins' other sister, Erica, and a friend, Christine Bordeaux, also face charges, but were not expected to appear in court until Wednesday.

Before the judge even read the court instructions inside the Douglas County jail Tuesday afternoon, Nikko started explaining how his constitutional rights were being violated. The judge told him it's an issue for another day.

Deputy County Attorney Chad Brown told the court that it's the state's intention to charge Jenkins as an habitual criminal. Jenkins will go to court for two guns charges on Wednesday. He informed the court that he will represent himself.

When most suspects say very little at bond review, Jenkins continued to talk. He told the court that the victim had planned to withdraw statements that he had threatened her and her family. "At no point did I threaten her," he said, explaining it didn't make sense considering she had his name tattooed on her face. This from a man whose own face is covered in tattoos.

Nikko's wife, Chalonda Jenkins, sat inside the jail courtroom where the public is separated by glass. She declined to comment following the bond hearings.

Three years ago, she wrote the court a letter because he wanted a divorce. She told the court, "I stick by my husband's side through thick and thin." In that letter, she described another woman as Jenkin's "sugar momma" and the "sugar momma" was the cause of the family problems.

Three years later, that woman is the one who says Jenkins and his family are threatening her life. For that, Nikko was arrested for making terroristic threats.

An Omaha police report says he threatened to kill her and her family and promised to send "demonic forces" to her mother's residence. Investigators say Nikko, his mother Laurie and sister Melonie, all called the woman to "go to OPD and drop the charges or we will hurt you and your family." Laurie and Melonie have been charged with witness tampering.

The victim told investigators she had been followed and called repeatedly to drop the case and is "extremely scared." Chalonda Jenkins, in court documents, said her husband Nikko "has a lot of mental disorders."

Jenkins served half his robbery sentence of 21 years. Despite trying to escape and biting a corrections officer, he still qualified for the "Good Time Law." Without it , he'd still be in prison.

"It doesn't make sense to have a guideline like that which applies to everyone across the board," said Nebraska state Sen. Jeremy Nordquist. "There needs to be more discretion used by the department."

We caught up with Nordquist and fellow state Sen. Health Mello during the Labor Day Parade. Both say prison overcrowding and the issues that surround it will be top priorities when the Legislature convenes in January.

"The Good Time Law and the conversations going on with it, as we know, there are violent criminals that need to stay in our Department of Corrections longer," said Mello, who fears if the state doesn't figure out a way to release non-violent offenders, the federal government will step in and all sorts of offenders could be walking out of Nebraska prisons.

Some experts wonder how there can be overcrowding when someone like Nikko Jenkins with such a violent past gets out early with no supervision.

    Governor Weighs-In Supporting Death Penalty

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has added his voice in support of the death penalty for Nikko Jenkins should Jenkins be convicted of the murder charges against him.

In a letter to Douglas County chief prosecutor Don Kleine, the governor wrote, "I fully support your decision to seek the death penalty.

"As you know, Nebraska has authorized the death penalty for situations such as the senseless murders of Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Juan Uribe-Pena, Curtis Bradford, and Andrea Kruger. The movement to abolish the death penalty in our state would have us believe that capital punishment is unjust. However, in my travels around the state, I know that the vast majority of Nebraskans believe that the only just sentence for a criminal who has terrorized the community with repeated murders is death."

Jenkins is charged with the four murders over the course of approximately a week-and-a-half.

The governor's letter was sent Thursday, September 5.

Employee Who Sold Ammo Used In Murders Speaks

The employee that sold the ammunition investigators say was used in recent murders allegedly committed by Nikko Jenkins murders talked to Channel 6 News Thursday. Gage Joy said he remembers Christine Bordeaux purchasing the ammunition as she talked to someone on her cell phone, who told her what kind to buy.

Court affidavits retrieved by Channel 6 explain Bordeauz bought two packs of five 12 gage classic magnum shot gun slugs. Employees said they are normally meant for hunting. The slugs are significantly larger than a normal bullet, and employees say they’re not a commonly purchased item.

President of Canfield, Scott Marble, said “When you get into a scenario where something you sell is used in a crime or something like that you have to go through the questions of what that means and how you are connected in the chain of events.”

There is no background check needed to buy ammunition in Nebraska. A check is only done when purchasing the actual gun - which Canfield doesn't sell. The U.S. Attorney’s office told Channel 6 it is legal for a felon to purchase ammunition, however under federal law a felon cannot be in possession of ammunition.

Bordeaux is being charged with a felon in possession of ammunition. She is set to appear in federal court Monday. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Nikko Jenkins: 'I need mental health treatment'

The man the FBI now says fits the profile of a serial killer repeatedly asked a court for mental health treatment.

Court transcripts obtained by KETV NewsWatch 7 from July 11, 2011, show the man now charged with four counts of first-degree murder asked a judge for help.

"The only thing that I want to ask of the court is to you to -- to somehow order me to get some form of mental health treatment before I'm released," Jenkins said at his plea and sentencing appearance. "I don't have that much time left on my prison sentence ... I'm not just trying to just be thrown out into society without any kind of mental health treatment."

Douglas County District Court judge Gary Randall interrupted Jenkins, agreeing with him, but telling the convicted felon it was out of his hands.

"Once I sentence you to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, I lose jurisdiction in terms of deciding where you go," the judge said to Jenkins' request of placement in a mental health facility.

Moments later, the judge agreed to put a recommendation for mental health treatment in the sentencing order.

"But that doesn't mean (the Department of Corrections) has to do it," Randall said.

At the hearing, Jenkins' public defender noted the convicted felon had not been taking his medication while in the Douglas County jail.

It was at that very same hearing where Judge Randall gave Jenkins credit for 513 days served in Douglas County Corrections -- effectively reducing the sentence for assaulting a prison officer.

    Prosecutors fought the credit.

Woman to remain jailed on accusation of supplying ammunition in slayings

Christine Bordeaux, an Omahan accused of illegally buying ammunition that authorities have linked to murder suspect Nikko Jenkins, will remain behind bars.

Bordeaux, 39, appeared in U.S. District Court Monday. U.S. Magistrate Thomas Thalken ordered her held until further proceedings in her case are scheduled.

Bordeaux, previously convicted of unauthorized use of a credit card, faces a federal charge of being a felon in possession of ammunition.

She is accused of illegally buying two boxes of Brenneke Classic Magnum 12-gauge ammunition — commonly known to hunters as “deer slugs” — on Aug. 2. Authorities have linked the ammunition to some of the four slayings in which Jenkins has been charged with first-degree murder.

Jenkins is accused of killing Andrea Kruger on Aug. 21; Curtis Bradford on Aug. 19; and Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz and Juan Uribe-Pena, both on Aug. 11.

    New Charge Against Jenkins' Sister

New charges are being filed against a woman whose name came to light during a quadruple murder spree recently in Omaha.

Erica Jenkins is the sister of suspected killer, Nikko Jenkins. Erica is one of several Jenkins family members arrested for separate crimes at the time Nikko Jenkins was taken into custody for murder.

The latest charge against Erica Jenkins is for robbery. According to police reports, Jenkins allegedly robbed a 26-year-old woman outside the Sinclair at 56th and Ames on August 12, 2013. The victim told police she was sitting in the passenger side of the car when a woman opened the driver's side door, reached in, and grabbed the victim's wallet and iPhone. The victim told police the suspect then sprayed her in the face with what appeared to be mace or pepper spray.

Readers may recall that Erica Jenkins had to be forcibly removed from the courtroom at an appearance earlier this month when she began shouting at the judge and then kicked over a podium.

Jenkins has been in police custody since August 29, when police arrested her near Budget Rent-A-Car on Abbott Drive. She was originally arrested for felony criminal mischief out of Sarpy County.

Her brother Nikko Jenkins is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Andrea Kruger, Curtis Bradford, Juan Uribe-Pena and Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz.

In addition to Erica, Nikko's other sister, Melonie, his mother, Laurie, and a friend, Christine Bordeaux, are all being held in jail.

Nikko Jenkins' uncle taken into custody in connection with Andrea Kruger slaying

An uncle of accused killer Nikko Jenkins was taken into police custody hours after authorities identified him as a second suspect in the slaying of an Omaha mother and wife.

Warren J. Levering, 51, was found on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in northeast Nebraska on Tuesday evening, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The Metro Area Fugitive Task Force took him into custody with the help of the Winnebago tribal police and U.S. Attorney's Office.

Authorities announced Tuesday afternoon that Levering had been charged in a warrant with being an accessory to a felony. He was booked into Douglas County Jail at 3:18 today.

A Crime Stoppers tip led to the arrest, the Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Levering's alleged role in the Aug. 21 shooting death of Andrea Kruger has not been disclosed. Those details are part of the ongoing investigation and are confidential, said Chief Deputy Tom Wheeler.

Kruger, the mother of three, was shot near 168th and Fort Streets. Authorities have charged Jenkins, 26, with first-degree murder in Kruger's death.

Jenkins is also charged in three other slayings: the Aug. 11 deaths of Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz and Juan Uribe-Pena in Spring Lake Park, and the Aug. 19 death of Curtis Bradford near 18th and Clark Streets.

Omaha police on Aug. 24 ticketed Levering on suspicion of shoplifting 12 bottles of vodka from a Baker's Supermarket on 72nd Street and of possessing drug paraphernalia, specifically a crack pipe, according to a police report.

Levering is the seventh family member or associate to be arrested since Nikko Jenkins was taken into custody. The others have been arrested on a variety of allegations. They are: Nikko Jenkins' mother and Levering's sister, Lori, charged with witness tampering; sisters Erica Jenkins and Lori Sayles, charged with robbery, and Melonie Jenkins, charged with witness tampering; Christine Bordeaux, charged with terroristic threats, being a felon in possession of ammunition and other offenses; and Anthony L. Wells, charged with possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.

Levering was released from prison in Oklahoma in June. He served nearly four years there for kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon and domestic abuse involving strangulation.

Levering spent more than six years in prison in the 1980s for burglary and an attempt to escape from custody, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services website.

Officials: Motive for Andrea Kruger's death was desire for car to use in robberies

Andrea Kruger was a random target for a random reason.

Nikko Jenkins — a just-released prisoner — needed money. So he and his family were looking for a car with which they could commit subsequent carjackings.

Jenkins saw a golden opportunity: the Aug. 20 concert of rapper Lil' Wayne at the CenturyLink Center. Jenkins and his family believed that people with money were in town — and they could rob and carjack concertgoers.

Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. John Pankonin relayed that never-before-released reason in court Tuesday. At the end of the hearing, Douglas County Judge Jeffrey Marcuzzo ordered Jenkins to face trial on four counts of first-degree murder and several other charges for the killing of Kruger that occurred hours after the concert ended; the Aug. 19 killing of Curtis Bradford; and the Aug. 11 killings of Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz and Juan Uribe-Pena in South Omaha's Spring Lake Park.

Pankonin also relayed the grisly comments Nikko Jenkins and his sister Erica made in the seconds after killing Kruger, a wife and mother of three young children.

A cousin, Christine Bordeaux, has cooperated with authorities and told investigators that four Jenkins family members were in a 2005 Ford Taurus looking for someone to carjack, Pankonin said.

Pankonin gave this account of Bordeaux's version of what happened in the early morning of Aug. 21:
Erica was driving, and Nikko was sitting behind her. Bordeaux was in the front passenger seat, and Nikko's uncle Warren Levering was in the back.

The four didn't want to keep using the Taurus because it was registered to one of Nikko Jenkins' girlfriends.

That's when Kruger happened upon the four at 168th and Fort Streets. Nikko Jenkins and Levering jumped out and rushed her. Nikko Jenkins pulled Kruger out of the SUV and threw her to the ground.
“No, no, please don't,” Kruger screamed.

Nikko Jenkins shot Kruger four times — twice in the head, once in the neck and once in the shoulder — and left her for dead.

As he rushed back to the car, Jenkins hollered: “That dumb (expletive) just laid down on the ground.”
As they raced away in both the Taurus and Kruger's SUV, Erica Jenkins phoned Nikko Jenkins.

“Why didn't you move that body into the ditch?” Erica Jenkins scolded her brother. “That was stupid.”
About a dozen family members of all four victims lined the front row of the courtroom. At one point, Bradford's mother spoke with Andrea Kruger's husband.

Michael-Ryan Kruger rested his elbows on his knees and dropped his head in his hands. Staring ahead, he watched Jenkins intently.

Jenkins showed little emotion. Several times, he turned to the gallery and squinted to see who was there. His chains from his waist and leg irons clanked as he did.

His attorney, Douglas County Public Defender Tom Riley, hit on the Jenkins family claims that Nikko Jenkins was mentally ill and had several times requested mental-health treatment while in prison.

In his own reported confession to the killings, Jenkins made little allusion that robbery might be the motive. He instead claimed that the killings were “sacrifices” that he made to an Egyptian serpent demon god he has dubbed as “Opophis.”

At one point, he also told a detective he had been suffering from persistent headaches since being released from prison. The serpent told him the only way to get rid of those headaches was to sacrifice people to it, Jenkins told Omaha police detective Dave Schneider.

In his questioning, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine suggest the root reason for three of the four murders was simple: to feed Nikko Jenkins' greed. The sole departure: the Aug. 19 killing of Bradford, where the motive is unclear.

    According to Schneider's testimony:

On Aug. 11, Erica Jenkins and Bordeaux met Uribe-Pena and Cajiga-Ruiz at Tquila Night Club, 3050 L St. The women spent some time with the men at an apartment, then suggested they all go to Spring Lake Park on the pretense that the women would commit sex acts.

Bordeaux told detectives she called Nikko Jenkins and told him she thought one of the men had as much as $1,000 cash on him. Bordeaux said Jenkins shot both men. Cajiga-Ruiz appeared to be ducking down before he was shot to death.

On Aug. 19, Jenkins partied with Bradford, a man he had met in prison. He even posed for a photo, with his arm around Bradford and the two flashing gang signs.

Hours later, Nikko and Erica went out with Bradford on the pretense of committing a “lick” — a street term for robbery. Authorities allege that both Erica and Nikko Jenkins shot Bradford in the head.

Prosecutors continue to sort out additional charges to file against Erica Jenkins, Levering and possibly other Jenkins family members. Bordeaux has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the Kruger death and the Spring Lake homicides.
