Esther Salas: A gunman in what appeared to be FedEx uniform opened fire at the home of a New Jersey federal judge

By Evan Perez, Amir Vera and Mark Morales,
    CNN

US Marshals and the FBI are investigating a shooting at the home of US District Court of New Jersey Judge Esther Salas, law enforcement officials said.

Initial reports from law enforcement said the child opened the door with the parent right behind. The door opened to a hail of gunfire and the gunman fled, a law enforcement source told CNN.

A child and the judge's husband were shot. The judge is unharmed.

"We are looking for one subject," the FBI said in a statement. "We are working closely with our state and local partners and will provide additional updates when available."

The gunman appeared to be wearing a FedEx uniform, a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

It is not yet known whether the gunman was a FedEx employee or someone posing to be an employee.

"We are aware of the media reports and are fully cooperating with investigating authorities," Jonathan Lyons, a spokesman for FedEx, said in an email statement.

Law enforcement has not been aware of any threats against the judge, the source told CNN. Right now investigators don't know the motive.

"Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts at this time as they cope with this senseless act," New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement. "This tragedy is our latest reminder that gun violence remains a crisis in our country and that our work to make every community safer isn't done."

Democratic US Sen. Bob Menendez, who said he was proud to have recommended Judge Salas to former President Barack Obama, also issued a statement sending his prayers to the family.

"My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice," Menendez said.

The FBI urged anyone with relevant information to call FBI Newark at 973-792-3001.

I don't know why the gov. of NJ is nattering on about gun violence when clearly this was a targeted attack and could have been carried out in any number of ways other than by the use of a gun.

    Hmm...

Federal judge's son killed, husband shot in New Jersey; Suspect found dead

The son of a federal judge in New Jersey was killed and her husband injured in a shooting at their home in North Brunswick on Sunday, and the man believed to be the suspect was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday.

Judge Esther Salas' 20-year-old son Daniel was shot multiple times and died at the scene, while her husband -- criminal defense Attorney Mark Anderl -- is in critical but stable condition at the hospital after undergoing surgery, North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack said.

A body later found at Campsite and Berry Brook roads in Sullivan County, New York, is believed to be the suspect. He was identified as Roy Hollander, a Manhattan lawyer and self-described anti-feminist, multiple law enforcement sources briefed on the case told ABC News.

Hollander's body was discovered by a municipal employee in the town of Rockland. New York State Police were on scene, and the FBI was called.

"A brazen and cowardly act of gun violence at their home in North Brunswick," Governor Phil Murphy said. "We give our full support to Judge Salas and her husband at this most trying time. This is an unconscionable tragedy."

Judge Salas, who is the first Latina to serve on the federal bench in New Jersey, was in the home at the time but was not hurt.

At the rate the judiciary committee and McConnell are moving at, and the amount of weeks the senate is in session, there is no way they’re going to be able to confirm all the district court judges before the end of the Congress. Including the vacant seats in red states with no nominee if McConnell really wants to see no vacancy left behind.

I imagine he will drop the blue state picks and rush through the red state picks only bothering to vote on ones that are part of a deal.

Interestingly, the longest red state vacancy without a nominee is in the chairman of the judiciary committee’s home state of South Carolina.

Trump has nominated Benjamin Beaton a former clerk of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for a seat on the Western District of Kentucky.

So this is another one of those "conservative" justices he promised aye?

I thought he was friends with Amul Thapar? Trump isn’t going to transition into a hardcore conservative he really never was a liberal or conservative. His ideology is literally all over the place.

Violence and death seem to be the only answers that some people understand.
