Joseph Robert Patterson Sentenced to LWOP in 2013 SD Murder of Two-Year-Old Tyrese Robert Ruffin

Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, is charged with aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault.

Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son dies after alleged beating by mother's boyfriend

The 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson died Friday of injuries suffered when he was beaten two days earlier, allegedly by his mother’s boyfriend.

The child died in a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., about 11:43 a.m. He had been hospitalized in critical condition with head injuries since arriving by ambulance on Wednesday night. The child’s name was not released.

The tot was apparently a “secret” child, according to media reports. Peterson was not sure the child was his until recently.

Peterson, who is not married, has another son about the same age named Adrian Peterson Jr., and a daughter, Adeja, with a different woman.

The boyfriend of the child’s mother, Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, who has a history of domestic incidents, called 911 about 5:45 Wednesday to report the child was choking in his apartment, where he had been caring for the boy, authorities said. The child was unresponsive when Sioux Falls Police and EMS arrived.

Patterson was arrested because the child had injuries that were determined to be consistent with abuse, police said.

Peterson, the National Football League’s MVP last season, was subdued in talking to the media at his locker room Friday.

Man accused of killing Peterson’s son was previously charged with abusing a 3-year-old

The man accused in the beating death of Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son had previously been accused of abusing a 3-year-old.

The Argus Leader reports that Joseph Robert Patterson had previously been given a suspended sentence on two domestic abuse cases, one involving an assault on a woman he was previously involved with, and another involving an assault on that woman’s child.

Patterson was given a one-year jail term for each of those two charges, but the jail time was suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling.

Now Patterson is charged with aggravated assault on an infant in the beating of Peterson’s son. Additional charges are possible now that Peterson’s son has died.

Now that this thug has supposedly graduated to murdering this poor child given his prior history I thing a capital charge is in order. Like Feldman in Texas forget anger management and domestic violence counseling this one is another poster child for the DP.

Vikings’ Adrian Peterson indicted on felony charge of injury to a child

Star NFL running back Adrian Peterson faces a felony charge of injury to a child, authorities said Friday. His lawyer said his client was doling out discipline to his son much like “he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas.”

Following his indictment Thursday by a grand jury, the Montgomery County, Texas, Sheriff’s office entered a warrant for Peterson’s arrest, according to sheriff’s Lt. Brady Fitzgerald.

The sheriff’s office didn’t offer details on how the child was allegedly injured. Peterson’s attorney, however, said that the “charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son.”

The attorney, Rusty Hardin, said “Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury.”

Rather, Hardin characterized the former NFL MVP as “a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son.”

Peterson will travel to Houston and will then “post bond as soon as it can be arranged,” according to Hardin.

“(Peterson) will continue to insist on his innocence of any intended wrongdoing,” the lawyer said.

Hardin claims that his client has “cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours.”

“Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning,” the lawyer said.

Right after news broke of the indictment, the Vikings released a statement saying they were “in the process of gathering information regarding the legal situation.”

The team came back a short time later to announce that its offensive catalyst has been deactivated for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.

The alleged criminal offense took place in Montgomery County, which is north of Houston.

Peterson himself grew up in Palestine, Texas, which is 150 miles north of Houston and 100 miles southeast of Dallas.

A running back for the Vikings since 2007, he rushed for 75 yards in his team’s season-opening 34-6 rout of the St. Louis Rams.

In 2012, he was named the league’s most valuable player when he ran for 2,097 yards, just nine yards short of the single-season mark, the NFL said.

Peterson, 29, lost a 2-year-old son last year who was living with his mother in South Dakota, and her boyfriend, Joseph Robert Patterson, was charged with murder. Patterson has denied the charge and said the boy choked on strawberry fruit snacks, the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, reported.

He also was indicted for an alleged attack on the boy’s mother and pleaded not guilty to those charges in July, the Argus Leader reported.

News of Peterson’s indictment casts another shadow over the NFL, which is reeling from the fallout over then-Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Ric allegedly punching his then-fiancee Janay Palmer in a casino elevator.

A New Jersey grand jury indicted Rice for third-degree aggravated assault; he pleaded not guilty and entered a pretrial intervention program for first-time offenders that could clear him if he successfully completes the requirements.

Ridiculous. One of my earliest memories was running around a big bush being chased by my great-grandmother who was trying to switch me! I'm absolutely sure I deserved it. The punishment didn't kill me (and I'm actually a pretty decent person, so I think the discipline I received as a child did just what it was intended!), and I loved my great-grandmother to death, so it didn't have an adverse effect on my relationship with her, either.

Texas and Montgomery County known as a hotbed of permissive liberalism ( NOT ), doesn't indict very many people for child abuse because you practice corporal punishment on your children. We are talking about a four year old in this case. The pictures shown by TMZ show at least six welt along one thigh that have drawn blood. My personal preference would be to indict now for the abuse charge rather than charge Capital Murder six months from now. There is probably a lot more to this story than we are being told.

Suspect in death of Adrian Peterson's son denies abuse

A man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in South Dakota last fall says the child choked on strawberry fruit snacks while he was in the bathroom.

The Argus Leader reports Joseph Patterson, 28, is facing second-degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault charges in the death of 2-year-old Tyrese Ruffin.

Patterson gave his version of events through his lawyer as he appeared in court Thursday for a motion hearing.

Prosecutors want jurors to hear evidence from previous accusations of child abuse against Patterson.

Defense lawyer Tim Rensch says the similarities aren't clear enough to allow the prejudicial testimony.

Patterson remains in custody on a $1 million cash bond. He was arrested again in June following accusations that he assaulted the boy's mother.

Who Is Ann Ashley Doohen? Meet The Alleged Mother Of Adrian Peterson’s Son Who Died After Assault

    Ann “Ashley” Doohen

Many questions continue to surround the death of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s 2-year old son. One of them centers on the identity of the child’s mother.

EveryJoe.com reported the child’s mother is Ashley Ann Doohen. And Hollywood Life said Ann “Ashley” Doohen posted a photograph of her son as a newborn on her Facebook page Friday morning. The photo has now received several comments from people offering their condolences and prayers in the wake of the incident. However, the identity of the child’s mother has yet to be confirmed by law-enforcement officials.

The Facebook page also includes an exchange between Ann “Ashley” Doohen and a Facebook account that has been linked to Joseph “Joey” Robert Patterson, the man accused of assaulting the 2-year-old.

Described as the boyfriend of the child’s mother, Patterson, 27, was originally charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant in the case. However, those charges were filed before the child’s death Friday. Police in Sioux Falls, S.D., are now considering additional charges, USA Today reported.

The toddler was in the care of Patterson at his apartment last Wednesday. A 911 call was placed requesting medical assistance for a choking child. When the emergency medical technicians arrived, authorities said, it quickly became evident that the boy’s injuries were not caused accidentally.

“As officers and first responders got there, they found [the] child was unresponsive and he was taken to the hospital,” police representative Sam Clemens told USA Today. “So they ended up calling police about that or letting them know. We had detectives talk to quite a few people to try to figure out what happened. What they ended up finding was that when the injuries happened there was one person with that child, and that person was Joseph Patterson.” Clemens added that it is believed the child’s mother was away for “a short time” and the attack occurred during that period.

TMZ reported that Peterson only recently learned the 2-year-old boy was his son. It said he met his son for the first time in the hospital Thursday when the child was on life support and that he has never met the man charged with assaulting him.

Joseph Patterson Faces Murder Charge In Death Of Adrian Peterson’s Son

A South Dakota man accused in the death of the young son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, prosecutors said Monday.

Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, is expected to be arraigned later this week in the death of 2-year-old Tyrese Robert Ruffin, who died two days after being hospitalized with severe head injuries. Investigators allege that Patterson, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, assaulted Tyrese on Oct. 9 while the two were alone in a Sioux Falls apartment.

Patterson was indicted by a grand jury on Friday, Lincoln County state’s attorney Tom Wollman said. He was initially jailed on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery, though prosecutors pursued more serious charges after the boy’s death.

A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence, while first-degree manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The charges accuse Patterson of intentionally or recklessly injuring Tyrese by causing brain damage or bleeding of the skull, from blows, shaking or making the boy’s head hit an object or surface.

Patterson’s attorney, Tim Rensch, said his client is “absolutely and totally not guilty.” Rensch said he could not yet discuss the case in detail because he hadn’t received all of the paperwork.

Peterson, who has said he found out the boy was his son only about two months ago, had been working with Tyrese’s mother to arrange a meeting with the boy when he received a call that the child was hospitalized with severe injuries. Peterson said he raced to South Dakota and saw Tyrese for the first time a day before he died.

Peterson returned to Sioux Falls on Wednesday to attend Tyrese’s funeral.

Peterson thanked his fellow NFL players for their support on Twitter following his son’s death on Oct. 11.

Man charged with Peterson's son's death is free

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has bonded out of a South Dakota jail.

The Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls says 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson is no longer housed there.

His attorney, Tim Rensch, confirmed Patterson's release and says there are no conditions on it, but Patterson plans to stay in the area and defend himself.

Patterson's bond was reduced to $750,000 on Monday, so he had to post $75,000.

He's charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the death of Tyrese Robert Ruffin.

Patterson is the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother.

Peterson had just recently found out that Tyrese was his son.
