Joseph Robert Patterson Sentenced to LWOP in 2013 SD Murder of Two-Year-Old Tyrese Robert Ruffin

Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, is charged with aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault.

Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son dies after alleged beating by mother's boyfriend

The 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson died Friday of injuries suffered when he was beaten two days earlier, allegedly by his mother’s boyfriend.

The child died in a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., about 11:43 a.m. He had been hospitalized in critical condition with head injuries since arriving by ambulance on Wednesday night. The child’s name was not released.

The tot was apparently a “secret” child, according to media reports. Peterson was not sure the child was his until recently.

Peterson, who is not married, has another son about the same age named Adrian Peterson Jr., and a daughter, Adeja, with a different woman.

The boyfriend of the child’s mother, Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, who has a history of domestic incidents, called 911 about 5:45 Wednesday to report the child was choking in his apartment, where he had been caring for the boy, authorities said. The child was unresponsive when Sioux Falls Police and EMS arrived.

Patterson was arrested because the child had injuries that were determined to be consistent with abuse, police said.

Peterson, the National Football League’s MVP last season, was subdued in talking to the media at his locker room Friday.

Man accused of killing Peterson’s son was previously charged with abusing a 3-year-old

The man accused in the beating death of Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son had previously been accused of abusing a 3-year-old.

The Argus Leader reports that Joseph Robert Patterson had previously been given a suspended sentence on two domestic abuse cases, one involving an assault on a woman he was previously involved with, and another involving an assault on that woman’s child.

Patterson was given a one-year jail term for each of those two charges, but the jail time was suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling.

Now Patterson is charged with aggravated assault on an infant in the beating of Peterson’s son. Additional charges are possible now that Peterson’s son has died.

Now that this thug has supposedly graduated to murdering this poor child given his prior history I thing a capital charge is in order. Like Feldman in Texas forget anger management and domestic violence counseling this one is another poster child for the DP.

Who Is Ann Ashley Doohen? Meet The Alleged Mother Of Adrian Peterson’s Son Who Died After Assault

    Ann “Ashley” Doohen

Many questions continue to surround the death of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s 2-year old son. One of them centers on the identity of the child’s mother.

EveryJoe.com reported the child’s mother is Ashley Ann Doohen. And Hollywood Life said Ann “Ashley” Doohen posted a photograph of her son as a newborn on her Facebook page Friday morning. The photo has now received several comments from people offering their condolences and prayers in the wake of the incident. However, the identity of the child’s mother has yet to be confirmed by law-enforcement officials.

The Facebook page also includes an exchange between Ann “Ashley” Doohen and a Facebook account that has been linked to Joseph “Joey” Robert Patterson, the man accused of assaulting the 2-year-old.

Described as the boyfriend of the child’s mother, Patterson, 27, was originally charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant in the case. However, those charges were filed before the child’s death Friday. Police in Sioux Falls, S.D., are now considering additional charges, USA Today reported.

The toddler was in the care of Patterson at his apartment last Wednesday. A 911 call was placed requesting medical assistance for a choking child. When the emergency medical technicians arrived, authorities said, it quickly became evident that the boy’s injuries were not caused accidentally.

“As officers and first responders got there, they found [the] child was unresponsive and he was taken to the hospital,” police representative Sam Clemens told USA Today. “So they ended up calling police about that or letting them know. We had detectives talk to quite a few people to try to figure out what happened. What they ended up finding was that when the injuries happened there was one person with that child, and that person was Joseph Patterson.” Clemens added that it is believed the child’s mother was away for “a short time” and the attack occurred during that period.

TMZ reported that Peterson only recently learned the 2-year-old boy was his son. It said he met his son for the first time in the hospital Thursday when the child was on life support and that he has never met the man charged with assaulting him.

Joseph Patterson Faces Murder Charge In Death Of Adrian Peterson’s Son

A South Dakota man accused in the death of the young son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, prosecutors said Monday.

Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, is expected to be arraigned later this week in the death of 2-year-old Tyrese Robert Ruffin, who died two days after being hospitalized with severe head injuries. Investigators allege that Patterson, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, assaulted Tyrese on Oct. 9 while the two were alone in a Sioux Falls apartment.

Patterson was indicted by a grand jury on Friday, Lincoln County state’s attorney Tom Wollman said. He was initially jailed on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery, though prosecutors pursued more serious charges after the boy’s death.

A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence, while first-degree manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The charges accuse Patterson of intentionally or recklessly injuring Tyrese by causing brain damage or bleeding of the skull, from blows, shaking or making the boy’s head hit an object or surface.

Patterson’s attorney, Tim Rensch, said his client is “absolutely and totally not guilty.” Rensch said he could not yet discuss the case in detail because he hadn’t received all of the paperwork.

Peterson, who has said he found out the boy was his son only about two months ago, had been working with Tyrese’s mother to arrange a meeting with the boy when he received a call that the child was hospitalized with severe injuries. Peterson said he raced to South Dakota and saw Tyrese for the first time a day before he died.

Peterson returned to Sioux Falls on Wednesday to attend Tyrese’s funeral.

Peterson thanked his fellow NFL players for their support on Twitter following his son’s death on Oct. 11.

Man charged with Peterson's son's death is free

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has bonded out of a South Dakota jail.

The Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls says 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson is no longer housed there.

His attorney, Tim Rensch, confirmed Patterson's release and says there are no conditions on it, but Patterson plans to stay in the area and defend himself.

Patterson's bond was reduced to $750,000 on Monday, so he had to post $75,000.

He's charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the death of Tyrese Robert Ruffin.

Patterson is the boyfriend of Tyrese's mother.

Peterson had just recently found out that Tyrese was his son.

I thought it was hard to get out of jail on bail, on a murder charge. Could it be that he doesn't have a lengthy criminal history?

The Eighth Amendment prohibits the imposition of any categorical rule which disqualifies murder defendants from eligibility for release on bail. Determination of bail is generally founded on a two-pronged test: whether the accused is (1) a flight risk or (2) a danger to the public. Peterson was bailed because the judge was satisfied that neither limb is reasonably engaged in this case. If his attendance at trial can be guaranteed otherwise than by confining him to jail then, absent any palpable risk of harm to the public, the judge has no constitutional basis on which to authorise his detention.

Interesting...thanks for that JT. I found this on Canadian government website. It seems that anyone can get bail, it is their right under our constitution. I guess it just seems that most people don't get out, because they are all ready laden with a criminal background e.g., most crime in Toronto is gun related and involves gang bangers.

    Judicial Release (Bail by Judge)

Once an individual is arrested and not released under police bail, then the accused has a right to appear for a bail hearing before a Justice of the Peace within a reasonable amount of time. This usually occurs within 24 hours but can deviate slightly based on jurisdiction. The accused appears in bail or remand court to be considered for release before trial. A remand court or bail court is a specialized court presided over by a Justice of the Peace to determine whether or not the accused should spend time in pre-trial custody. The onus is on the crown to prove or show cause why the individual should not be released. If the crown cannot convince the court of reasons to continue detention, then the assumption is that the individual should be released. Another term for a bail hearing is the show-cause hearing. Factors that will favour the crown to continue detention include

concern that the accused may flee the country
    the individual may reoffend
the individual may not appear at future court dates
This onus on the crown however is reversed, or in other words, the accused must prove why they should not remain in custody if the accused falls under one of the following scenarios:

the person committed an indictable offence and is not a Canadian resident
the individual is in contravention of a previous order of the court
the charge involves failure to appear in court or a breach of bail conditions
the individual is charged with importing, exporting or trafficking in narcotics

Man accused of killing Adrian Peterson’s son now charged with attacking the boy’s mother

Joseph Robert Patterson, the man accused of killing Adrian Peterson’s son last year, has been free on bail since October. But now Patterson is locked up again, accused of attacking the mother of the 2-year-old boy he allegedly killed last year.

The Argus-Leader reports that Patterson has been arrested on kidnapping and assault charges for reportedly attacking the mother of 2-year-old Tyrese Doohen.

Patterson is still facing the charges of murder and child abuse in the death of Tyrese. He had been living with and dating Tyrese’s mother at the time of the boy’s death.

Patterson, who had been ordered not to have contact with Tyrese’s family, is expected to appear in court this afternoon.
