Prosecutors to seek death penalty in Greensboro shooting
GREENSBORO — The Guilford County district attorney’s office decided this week to pursue the death penalty against a Greensboro man if he is convicted of first-degree murder by a jury.
Brandon Jawon Pompey, 27, of 1133 Trent St. Apt. E, is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries.
Pompey is accused of shooting and killing Clarence Eugene Toran Jr., 24, and wounding Toran’s younger brother, Terence, in the parking lot of the Timber Hollow Apartments in the 3300 block of Trent Street on July 11, 2014.
The district attorney’s office is pursuing the death penalty based on two aggravating circumstances: the crime was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, and it was committed during another crime of violence against another person, prosecutor Al Hubbard said.
According to autopsy results from the N.C. medical examiner’s office, Clarence Toran was shot nine times, mostly in his legs. One bullet struck his back, hitting a lung and his heart.
The shooting followed a night of drinking at a friend’s apartment, according to a court document filed by Greensboro police. Clarence Toran and Pompey got into an argument that ended outside.
Clarence Toran was dead in the parking lot when EMS arrived. Pompey already had fled. He turned himself in to Maryland police on Aug. 5.
