Postal Worker Tyson Barnette Killed While Delivering Mail in Maryland

A U.S. postal worker in Maryland was shot and killed while on his route, according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Tyson Jerome Barnette, a 26-year-old letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, was found Saturday around 7 p.m. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in Landover, Md.

Barnette was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Agency is investigating the murder alongside the local police department and is offering a $100,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrator.

"We're looking for any information that anyone might have about the individual responsible for the killing of the carrier or what may have transpired right before or right after," Frank Schissler, a U.S. Postal Inspector and public information officer for U.S. Postal Inspection Service Agency, told ABC News.

According to the USPS, any person who kills or attempts to kill any federal officer or employee while they are on official duties could face the death penalty.

Anyone with information regarding the case is urged to call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455 or Prince George's County Police at 301-772-4925.

A very sad story in the continuing drama of crime in the USA.

Pretty soon everyone will need to be armed with handguns with crime like this going on out of control.

Because the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

And when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.

Investigators canvass route of 26-year-old slain postal worker Tyson Barnette

On Saturday, Prince George's County Police investigators and U.S. Inspectors were out canvassing the same route where Tyson Barnette was murdered.

They are looking for any new leads that will lead them to Barnette's killer. The letter carrier was shot to death while on his assigned route in Landover, Md.

US Postal Inspectors and Prince George's County detectives went door to door revisiting 26-year-old Tyson Barnette's assigned route, the day he was killed.

Frank Schissler, a Postal inspector says, "Hopefully there's someone who knows something. It might not be something that happened right before he was killed or after he was killed. It may have occurred another day. There may have been some incident that could have led to this."

One week ago Saturday, Barnette was near the end of his route in the 1600 block of Reed Street and Jutewood Avenue in Landover around 7:20 in the evening, when he was gunned down.

Barnette didn't have a designated route but some residents say they've seen him deliver their mail before.

James Cox, said, "It's a tragedy. I've seen him before. I didn't really know him. I asked him one time if the road was closed other than, it's unfortunate."

Kelly Crisp, a resident says, "It's sad, surprised it happened here. It's sad he was so young. And it's a little scary they don't know what's going."

"It's just very important that you think about it during the holiday season. It would be imperative to give the Barnette family some closure here. This was a horrible crime that occurred here," said Officer 1st Class Nicole Hubbard with the Prince George's Co. Police.

US inspectors say solving this murder is their top priority. Along with Crime Solvers they're offering a combined $125,000 reward.

They say there have been two additional postal workers killed on the job in the last four years including one in Miami due to a robbery and earlier this year a letter carrier was shot and killed in Texas in a dispute over mail service. Both of those cases have been solved.

In Barnette's case, investigators say they don't know why anyone would want to shoot him but are looking into robbery as a possible motive.

Schissler says, "We're exploring that possibility but we are exploring all possible leads and all possibilities for the murder."

Killing a US postal worker in the line of work is a federal crime and the person or persons responsible, when caught, could face the death penalty.

SUV sought in fatal shooting of postal worker who died delivering mail in the dark

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is asking for the public’s help finding an SUV that may be linked to the slaying last year of a postman who was shot as he was delivering mail after dark in Prince George’s County.

The Postal Inspection Service released surveillance video Tuesday of what officials believe is a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was seen in the area where Tyson Jerome Barnette, 26, was slain on Nov. 23, 2013.

The video is the latest development in Barnette’s killing. The Upper Marlboro resident was delivering mail in the 1600 block of Jutewood Avenue, near Cheverly, when police were called to the area for a shooting around 7:20 p.m., according to authorities.

The video released Tuesday shows a dark SUV quickly driving down a street with a time stamp of 7:25 p.m. the same evening Barnette was found dead.

The video is from a camera along Englewood Drive, about 100 yards from the crime scene, said Tom Ouellette, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Authorities have had the video since the start of the case but did not immediately release it since it was evidence in an ongoing investigation, Ouellette said. “We felt this was the appropriate time to reengage the public in this investigation of one of our postal letter carriers,” he said.

Inspectors hope the video will spark more tips that will help bring closure to the case. “We’re hoping that the individual who either owns the vehicle or anyone who knows something about the vehicle will step forward and provide information that will bring a resolution,” Ouellette said. “Any information, no matter how small would be greatly beneficial.”

Postal inspectors are offering a reward of up to $100,000 is available for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. Prince George’s County police is offering a $25,000 reward in this case, for a possible combined reward of up to $125,000.

Barnette’s death sparked concerns from mail carriers nationwide about the safety of delivering mail after dark. The case also prompted the Postal Service’s inspector general to review late delivery in the District and Maryland suburbs.

The report showed that the number of letter carriers still delivering mail after 5 p.m. — often in the dark during winter months — has grown to the point that the Capital District ranks as one of the worst places in the nation for late mail service.

Anyone with information is being asked to call 877-876-2455. Callers can remain anonymous.
