Somalian military court executes three soldiers guilty of murder

A military court in Somalia executed three soldiers of transitional federal government on Saturday who were found guilty of murder. Scores of local residents packed the square in Mogadishu’s Hamar-jajab where a government firing squad carried out the death penalty in public.

After the execution, military court Judge Hassan Mohammed Hussein Mungab held a press conference in a police center not far from where the execution took place. “Abdul Azeez Mohyidiin Ga’al, a policeman, was found guilty of murdering another soldier of Somali police forces,” Mungab said, adding that he was sentenced to death in December. “The second executed man, Antob Arabow Addan, killed Hassan Mohammed Sabiye, a civilian, last year.”

The third man executed, Wowlid Mohammed, confessed to murdering a civil servant in 2010, according to Mungab.

Mohammed Hassan Diriye, Somali political analyst, tells AHN that the public executions may help curb the arbitrary often killings committed by Somali government forces.

“Somali soldiers are everywhere in the TFG controlled neighborhoods in Mogadishu. Sometimes, they commit murder among themselves or civilians and that [adds to the] deteriorating security situation of Mogadishu,” Dirye explained.

It is the fourth time Somalia’s military court under the transitional federal government has conducted such executions against Somali police and military soldiers stationed in the capital.

Somali militants execute 3 said to inform CIA, MI6

Somalia's most powerful militant group publicly executed three of its members Sunday, saying the trio had spied on the militants for the U.S. and British intelligence agencies.

Al-Shabab said the three men were CIA and MI6 informants, and were the reason several drone attacks killed leaders from the group.

Mohamed Jama, a resident in the coastal town of Merca, told The Associated Press that dozens of masked fighters tied up the three men and killed them by firing squad.

A self-proclaimed militant judge gave the death penalty order. Hundreds of residents were forced to watch and many of them vomited after the killings, Jama said.

Gay teen ‘stoned to death’ in Somalia

A gay teen was allegedly stoned to death as punishment for his homosexuality.

According to a gay Muslim group Somali Gay Community, the 18-year-old was buried in a hole up to his chest and pelted with rocks.

Identity Kenya reports Mohamed Ali Baashi was grabbed by members of the Al Queda link group ALshabaab about 50 miles from the capital Mogadishu.

On one of the pictures, Somali Gay Community writes: ‘In a scene straight out of the Dark Ages, this Somali young man accused of sodomy was stoned to death by Islamic thugs while horrified villagers were forced to watch.

‘A rebel announced that Mohamed Baashi, along with a man who had been accused of murder, had both confessed to their crimes.’

The man accused of murder was allegedly shot to death.

‘This is the day of justice,’ the group quote the judge as saying. ‘We investigated, and this man did what Muslims shouldn’t do.

‘As a result, he will be stoned to death and the one that killed someone will be shot because homosexuality is more punishable in Islam.’

Both Gay Star News and Identity Kenya have attempted to reach the group to verify the claims, but efforts have not yet been successful.

    Somalia executes journalist’s killer

MOGADISHU: Somalia’s government on Saturday executed a man who was convicted of murdering a journalist, a military official said, the first such execution in a country where those who kill media workers often evade justice.

Aden Sheikh Abdi was killed by firing squad early Saturday in the capital, Mogadishu, according to Col. Abdullahi Muse Keyse, a spokesman for Somalia’s military court. “His execution is a new chapter for Somalia,” he said.

Last month a Mogadishu military tribunal found Abdi guilty of the murder late last year of reporter Hassan Yusuf Absuge, who worked for Radio Maanta in Mogadishu. During his trial Abdi was accused of belonging to the Al-Qaeda-linked extremist rebels of Al-Shabab, who have staged multiple terrorist attacks across Somalia in a bloody campaign to seize political power. The rebels were pushed out of Mogadishu in Aug. 2011, but they continue to carry out targeted killings there and elsewhere in Somalia.

Shortly after, two gunmen shot dead a technician employed at Somalia’s state-run broadcaster Radio Mogadishu on Saturday, the sixth media professional killed in the country this year, officials and a colleague said.
“Two men armed with pistols shot Ahmed Sharif and escaped the scene. He was rushed to hospital but he died instantly,” said colleague Mohamed Sacid.

Sharif was gunned down near his home in the capital Mogadishu just hours after Somalia publicly executed the only person to be convicted to date of killing a journalist in the country. Eighteen media professionals were killed in Somalia in 2012.
Media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders has called the security situation for media personnel in the country’s cities “deplorable.” Somalia ranks 175th out of 179 countries in the group’s 2013 Press Freedom Index.

Deputy Information Minister Abdishakur Ali Mire confirmed the killing to reporters.
“We condemn the killing,” he said. “He was an innocent who did nothing wrong and we expect the law enforcement departments to bring those responsible to justice.”

The Abdi case was the first to be actively prosecuted by the Somali government, coming after years of condemnations from rights groups who urged Somali authorities to do more to establish the rule of law and end the killings of journalists.
The killings of media workers often happen in the government-controlled areas that journalists generally consider safe, and reporters must watch their backs for attacks from extremists and criminals and fight through judicial inaction and even outright hostility from the government.

Tom Rhodes, the East Africa consultant for the Committee to Protect Journalists, praised the decision to execute the convict, saying it would help end impunity in the volatile Horn of African nation.
“This appears a positive step in ending a long record of impunity in the killing of journalists in Somalia,” he said. “Somalia has routinely ranked high on CPJ’s impunity index for unsolved murders. Let us hope that this case will send a clear message to those who believe silencing journalists through the gun ... that there are consequences.”

Somalia is one of the most dangerous places for media workers. At least 18 Somali journalists were killed last year, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. It’s not entirely clear who has been carrying out the killings of journalists. Al-Shabab militants, warlords, criminals, and even government agents all could have reasons to see journalists killed in Somalia.

Somalia soldier executed in Mogadishu over pupil murder

A firing squad has executed a soldier in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, after a military court convicted him of murdering a school pupil last year.

A crowd, including children, saw the execution at the police academy in the city, according to photographs posted on state-run Radio Mogadishu's website.

The death penalty is legal in Somalia, a mostly lawless state in East Africa.

Government soldiers are often accused of acting with impunity, including killing and raping.

Radio Mogadishu reported that more soldiers found guilty in other cases by the military are expected to face a firing squad in the coming days.
    'Blindfolded and tied'

Maslah Isse Jimaan was convicted of shooting dead a pupil, Omar Mohamed Ahmed, in the capital's main market, Bakara, during a security force operation last year.

A firing squad of more than 10 policemen and soldiers are seen in the photographs taking positions, before Jimaan, blindfolded and tied to a pole, was shot dead in front of the crowd.

Jimaan had violated the military code and had faced justice for this, the military court chairman, Libaan Ali Yarow, told the BBC Somali Service.

Mr Yarow said he was unaware that the execution had taken place in front of children.

Somalia has been without an effective central government since the fall of long-serving ruler Siad Barre in 1991.

The country is split along clan and religious lines, with militant Islamist group al-Shabab controlling much of the south.

African Union (AU) and government troops are battling to defeat al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda.

In August, a firing squad executed a man convicted of being an al-Shabab member and of murdering a journalist in 2012.

Al-Shabab also carries out executions in areas under its control for crimes such as murder.

Al-Shabab member executed without trail after Military court order

Mogadishu (Somalicurrent) – After recent accusations by the human rights watch on unfair trail proceedings in the Somali military courts’, the court has issued an execution order of a suspected Alshabab member who has been caught “red handed”. Nour Abdale Awale then has been shot several times to death in the spot where he was caught by the military forces.

This is the first execution order paid by the Somali military court after the deadly attack by Alshabab fighters on Somali Federal Parliament complex. The attack has claimed the lives of more than 10 people and injuries of dozens of people including 2 legislators.

Nour Abdale Awale, a young man suspected to be member of Al-Qaeda linked group, Alshabab who was caught from Deynile district has been shot to death in the spot where he was caught by the Somali armed forces after the military court has issued an emergency order allowing military personals to execute the suspected on the spot without taking him to court proceedings. The executed young man accused of having illegal weapon including grenade bomb and to be the mastermind of an attack launched on Deynile district.

Chairman of military’s lower court Liban Ali Yarow said that the court has issued the execution order of Nur Abdale Awale, 21 who was member of Alshabab militant fighters after he confessed all the allegations and crimes he committed. “He found guilty of attacking with grenade bombs on Deynile district.”

Chairman of Somali military supreme courts Abdirahman Mohamed Tur revealed, “Starting from today, everyone confirmed and convicted of guilty of being one of the militant group of alshabab, will not be given a chance and will be executed in the spot where he is being caught.”

Human Rights watch has released a report several days ago, where it strongly accused Somali Military courts of violating fair trails and rights of the defendants including military personnel, suspected insurgents and supporters, police officers, and ordinary civilians. The courts since 2011 have tried hundreds of people beyond the courts’ legal mandate or in proceedings that fall short of international fair trial standards.
