William Brandon Aydelott Found Not Guilty in 2013 FL Slaying of Sharon Aydelott

Florida teen charged with murder after mother found stabbed in eye

A woman was found stabbed and beaten to death in her home on Christmas Eve and her 17-year-old son has been charged with the crime.

William Brandon Aydelott was arrested Tuesday night and charged with premeditated murder in the death of his mother, Sharon Aydelott, a teacher at Holley-Navarre Middle School.

“This is a sad day for that family,” said Tim Wyrosdick, superintendent of Santa Rosa County schools.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was called to Sharon Aydelott’s home at 1119 Crane Cove Blvd. about 6 p.m. Tuesday after someone stopped by and discovered her.

When investigators arrived, they found an open front door smeared with what appeared to be blood.

Just inside, her body was lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

She had a large kitchen knife sticking out of her eye socket and had been stabbed and cut multiple times, including a deep slash across her throat, the Sheriff’s Office reported. She also had been beaten with a baseball bat.

After the crime, her son reportedly fled the scene.

He was found about three hours later at a nearby residence where he had been staying since he began arguing with his mother in September, according to his arrest report.

He came in for questioning without resistance. His clothes were clean, but a bit of dried blood remained on his wrist.

During questioning Aydelott was calm and appeared emotionless — other than giving a few small smiles — as he confessed to the murder, the report said.

He was being held Wednesday in the Santa Rosa County Jail with no bond set.

Sharon Aydelott taught science to sixth and seventh graders at Holley-Navarre Middle School. She had been teaching there since 1998.

Wyrosdick said a crisis support system was already being set up in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“This is our highest priority,” he said.

Teen accused of killing mom to be charged as adult

A 17-year-old boy accused in the Christmas Eve stabbing and bludgeoning death of his mother will be charged as an adult, prosecutors said Thursday.

State Attorney Bill Eddins told The Associated Press he would file a second-degree murder charge on Thursday against William Brandon Aydelott. He said he would also request that the charge against the Gulf Breeze High School senior and baseball standout be upgraded to first-degree, premeditated murder by a grand jury in the coming weeks.

Aydelott could face life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.

Eddins says the 17-year-old boy, who turns 18 on Feb. 22, would be moved out of juvenile custody immediately and placed in a segregated section of an adult jail.

"Because of the overall nature of the crime, it is our conclusion the circumstances were such that we should seek first-degree murder charges," Eddins said.

Under Florida law, prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty because Aydelott is not 18.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that Aydelott confessed to attacking his mother with kitchen knives and a baseball bat after the two had an argument.

Sharon Aydelott, a longtime middle school science teacher, died at the scene. The sheriff's office said the teen was found hours later at a nearby home, where he surrendered.

Randy Renfroe, Aydelott's baseball coach at Gulf Breeze High School, said the Aydelotts were getting a divorce and that William Aydelott, who goes by Brandon, appeared to be having a tough time with that.

"We are just in shock and disbelief," Renfroe said.

He said Aydelott had a bright future and was likely a candidate for a college baseball scholarship because of his pitching skills.

The coach said the 6-foot-3, 189-pound athlete never showed signs of aggression, even when calls on the field did not go his way.

Refroe said Aydelott's family was supportive of his baseball ambitions and often showed up to cheer him on at games.

Renfroe said that he hoped authorities would consider "all aspects" of Aydelott's life and that he was disappointed to hear the teen would be charged as an adult.

The school district has called in crisis counselors to help students. The coach said he planned to meet with his baseball players on Friday.

Brandon Aydelott's Facebook page, last updated in October, featured a picture of his baseball team gathered in prayer on a baseball field.

His mother frequently updated her Facebook page with pictures of bright flowers. The page said she liked Joel Osteen Ministries, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Adele.

Funeral services for Sharon Aydelott had not been announced Thursday afternoon.

Grand jury indicts teen accused of killing mom

A Panhandle teen accused in the Christmas Eve stabbing and bludgeoning death of his mother has been formally charged with premeditated first-degree murder.

The Pensacola News Journal (http://goo.gl/ZibQpn ) reports that a Santa Rosa County grand jury indicted 17-year-old William Brandon Aydelott on Thursday.

Prosecutors had previously charged Aydelott as an adult with second-degree murder but needed a grand jury for the increased charge. Under Florida law, prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty because Aydelott is not 18. The most he can receive is life in prison.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office says Aydelott confessed to attacking his mother with kitchen knives and a baseball bat after the two had an argument. Sharon Aydelott, a longtime middle school science teacher, died at the scene. The sheriff's office said the teen was found hours later at a nearby home, where he surrendered.

    Verdict in Aydelott competency hearing

A Gulf Breeze teenager charged with the murder of his mother on Christmas Eve, will not be going to trial any time soon. A Santa Rosa County judge ruled that 17-year-old William Brandon Aydelott is not competent to stand trial. Sharon Aydelott body was found in her home, stabbed and beaten to death. Investigators say her son confessed to the crime that night. The hearing inside this courtroom only lasted about ten minutes. The state did not object to sending Aydelott to Florida State Hospital to regain competence. Before the hearing even started, Aydelott sat down looking calm, when he suddenly turned toward the media and began speaking. Much of what he said did not make sense. "I'm always right and if you don't believe me, bad things will happen," he said. His attorneys quickly took him out of the courtroom. "We've had several attorneys meet with him within the first 48 hours of being detained. We quickly drew the conclusion he had some issues," said Bruce Miller, public defender. Circuit judge John Simon said Aydelott is not competent to stand trial. This was based on evaluations from two experts who spoke to him inside the jail. The judge ordered Aydelott to be sent to the Florida State Hospital for six months to regain competence and be evaluated. "Then when he is brought back, any other issues, such as insanity at the time of offense, can be evaluated at that time. If it is raised by the defense," said Bill Eddins, State Attorney. Those evaluations are sealed and neither attorney is discussing it. "I don't want to get into the specifics of jail visits or our observations of what our attorneys and staff have observed," said Miller. Aydelott was also arraigned. He pleaded not guilty to first degree murder. He also pleaded not guilty to battery against a law enforcement officer, stemming from an incident inside the jail. According to a Santa Rosa County Sheriff's report, on January 1st, Aydelott punched an officer in the jaw, when he did not get to see a doctor right away. "Both charges are on hold until it's determined whether or not he's competent to proceed, hopefully within a few months," said Eddins. Aydelott will spend the next six months at Florida State Hospital. He's expected to be back in court on July 14th.

Competency of teen accused of killing mom in question

A Gulf Breeze teen accused of killing his mother last year will undergo additional evaluation to determine if he's mentally fit to stand trial.

William Brandon Aydelott, 18, was charged with premeditated murder for allegedly stabbing and bludgeoning his mother to death on Christmas Eve. Shortly afterward, he was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial and sent to Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee for treatment and monitoring.

In a status hearing Monday morning in the Santa Rosa County Courthouse, both Aydelott's prosecution and defense agreed that further evaluation of Aydelott's competency for trial is warranted before legal actions continue.

For court purposes, a defendant's competency references their ability to understand their rights and court proceedings.

An independent expert is supposed to test Aydelott's competency within the next 30 days to determine whether his trial should proceed. If it is determined that Aydelott is still not competent enough to stand trial, he would return to a mental health facility for a period of time determined by the court.

If Aydelott is found competent for a jury trial, he would face life in prison if convicted of killing 48-year-old Sharon Aydelott.

During Aydelott's last court hearing in January, he was briefly escorted from the courtroom after he began rambling nonsense out loud for several minutes. About 10 days prior, Aydelott was charged with battery for allegedly punching a Santa Rosa County corrections officer in the jaw when he wasn't immediately given access to a physician upon request.

Officials and neighbors have been reluctant to speak about what may have sparked the then 17-year-old to attack and kill his mother. According to Aydelott's arrest report, the two had gotten into a heated argument the day of the homicide.

Sharon Aydelott was a teacher at Holley-Navarre Middle School who was reportedly well-liked among her students and peers. She tutored, coached cross country and helped coordinate schools science fairs, talent shows and student council meetings.

William was a senior at Gulf Breeze High School and a pitcher on the baseball team. He had no major disciplinary issues before the homicide, according to law enforcement officials.

Aydelott has been released from the state hospital and is in custody in Santa Rosa County Jail. He did not appear in court Monday morning.

Public defender Bruce Miller said Aydelott was evaluated at the state hospital before his release, but that the results of the evaluation were confidential.

Aydelott's independent psychological evaluation is scheduled to be completed before his next court date Aug. 25.

Aydelott still unfit for trial in mom's death

This morning, a Gulf Breeze teenager accused of killing his mother on Christmas Eve was ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial for a second time.

William Brandon Aydelott, 18, allegedly bludgeoned and stabbed his mother to death during a confrontation in her home last year.

He was found incompetent to stand trial for the homicide shortly afterward and involuntarily committed to a state hospital for treatment. In a scheduled pre-trial status conference in the Santa Rosa County Courthouse today, the defense and prosecution agreed that Aydelott should remain in treatment. Aydelott did not appear in court.

When a defendant is found incompetent to stand trial, it means that there are concerns over whether they can adequately follow court proceedings and understand their rights as the accused.

Aydelott is currently being held in Santa Rosa County Jail, but he will soon be transported back to a state hospital. There, doctors may attempt to improve Aydelott's competency through therapy or medication, according to officials.

Until doctors determine Aydelott is fit for trial, he will remain in treatment indefinitely. His next status conference has been scheduled for February.

Aydelott found incompetent for trial again

A Gulf Breeze teenager accused of his mother's murder has been ruled incompetent to stand trial for a third time, according to the State Attorney's Office.

William Brandon Aydelott, 19, was charged with fatally stabbing and beating his mother, Sharon Aydelott, on Christmas Eve 2013.

Shortly afterward, mental health professionals determined that Aydelott was mentally incompetent to stand trial. He was transported from Santa Rosa County Jail to the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee for treatment.

One hurdle left for Aydelott trial

State doctors have found William Brandon Aydelott, a Gulf Breeze man charged with killing his mother when he was a teenager, competent to stand trial.

However, a judge granted a request for a second opinion in a hearing Thursday. If the second doctor affirms Aydelott's competence, the case will go forward to trial.

Aydelott, now 20, was 17 when he allegedly fatally bludgeoned and stabbed his mother, Sharon Hill Aydelott, on Christmas Eve 2013. Shortly after his arrest, Aydelott displayed unusual courtroom behavior, including babbling to himself during a January 2014 court hearing.

He was ultimately deemed not competent to stand trial and involuntarily committed to a state hospital for continued mental evaluation and treatment. For court purposes, competency is measured as a defendant's ability to comprehend court proceedings and consult with their attorney with a reasonable degree of understanding.

Since Aydelott's initial commitment, staff at Florida State Hospital have reported Aydelott's mental health status back to the court about every six months. After nearly two-and-a-half years of treatment, the hospital reported that Aydelott's competency has been restored.

Aydelott's attorney, Ronald Scott Ritchie, reported the finding to Circuit Judge John Simon during a hearing Thursday morning at the Santa Rosa County Courthouse. Aydelott was present for the hearing, sitting quietly and subdued in his seat

Ritchie asked Simon for approval to have Aydelott evaluated once more by a local doctor who has dealt with Aydelott in the past.

Simon granted the request, ordering that the evaluation be completed within the next 30 days. He tentatively scheduled a hearing July 19 to discuss the results of the second evaluation.

Aydelott has been charged with first-degree murder in his mother's death. Assistant State Attorney Bridgette Jensen is prosecuting the case for the state.

Teen charged in stabbing death of his mother found competent to stand trial

William “Brandon” Aydelott has been found competent to stand trial for the brutal 2013 Christmas Eve murder of his mother.

Aydelott’s lawyer called the ruling into question, though, soon after the teen was transferred from a state mental hospital to the Santa Rosa County Jail.

The Public Defender’s Office has requested and received permission to have their own mental health expert evaluate Aydelott. A motion hearing will be held July 19 to review the results, said State Attorney Bill Eddins.

Aydelott was 17 in December 2013 when, by his own admission, he stabbed and beat to death his mother, Sharon Aydelott, a teacher at Holley-Navarre Middle School.

Within a month of being charged with first degree murder, the Gulf Breeze High School senior had been declared unfit to stand trial and committed to the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee.

Public Defender Bruce Miller said the state mental hospital has declared Aydelott to be competent in the past when he “clearly was not.” He also questioned how someone who has basically been incompetent for more than two years can suddenly become competent.

“That’s a long time for them to be working to restore competency,” Miller said. “We obviously needed to get an independent evaluation.”

Should the Public Defender’s Office expert find Aydelott competent, preparations would begin to bring him to trial, Eddins said. He said he anticipates the case could come to court within approximately a year.

“The scenario for a case of this nature is really quite simple,” he said.

The question would remain, though, whether Aydelott could remain competent while awaiting trial in a county jail environment.

“It is apparent to everyone that Mr. Aydelott has mental issues and those issues will continue to be a concern for the court, the prosecution as well as the defense,” Eddins said. “There’s no way to say at this point whether he will remain competent long enough for discovery to be prepared and the trial to occur.”

Hearing rescheduled for man accused of killing mother

It will be at least another week before we find out if a Gulf Breeze man will go to trial for killing his mother.

William Brandon Aydelott is accused of stabbing and beating his mother to death on Christmas Eve of 2013. He was 17-years-old at the time.

He's yet to face a jury because he was deemed incompetent to stand trial during a January 2014 hearing.

Incompetence is a legal term for whether someone understands what's going on and if they can grasp the procedures taking place and help their attorney with the defense.

Nearly two and a half years later, he may now be mentally fit for trial.

That's according to recent mental evaluations. A doctor at Florida State Hospital was the first to sign off on Aydelott's competency.

A local doctor reached the same conclusion, but didn't have his report ready in time for today's hearing. That's what everyone is waiting for now.

"We need to know what that doctor based that opinion on, what took place during the evaluation, what questions were asked," Scott Ritchie, Aydelott's attorney, said. "The devil's in the details."

The hearing has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 27th.
