Child rapist latest prisoner executed in Saudi

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Monday beheaded a child rapist, adding to what activists say is one of the world’s highest execution tolls.

The Interior Ministry said Suleiman bin Abdullah had been found guilty of kidnapping a male child, tying him up “and performing the obscene” act.

Authorities carried out the sentence against him in Buraydah city, northwest of Riyadh, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

He was the latest of 84 Saudis and foreigners to be executed in the kingdom this year, according to an AFP tally.

Rape, murder, drug trafficking, apostasy and armed robbery are punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of Islamic Sharia law.

Saudi Arabia had the third-highest number of recorded executions in 2013, behind Iran and Iraq, Amnesty International said in a report released in March.

Saudi beheads Pakistani for smuggling heroin

RIYADH – Saudi Arabia on Thursday beheaded a Pakistani man for smuggling heroin, the twelfth person from Pakistan to be executed in the kingdom for drug trafficking since mid-October.

They are among 85 foreigners and Saudis put to death this year in the oil-rich kingdom. Saudi Arabia has one of the world’s highest execution tolls. The sentence against Ismail Khan Sayed was carried out in Eastern Province after his conviction for smuggling a large amount of heroin, the Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

In addition to amphetamines and other drugs, Saudi authorities seized almost 18 kilogrammes (40 pounds) of raw heroin during the Islamic calendar year that ended in October, according to the Interior Ministry. The Gulf has become an increasingly important market for illicit drugs in recent years, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are also punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of Islamic sharia law.

    Saudi beheaded for murder

Saudi Arabia beheaded Monday a man for stabbing to death a relative, the interior ministry said.

Misfir bin Nasser bin Misfir Lesloom al-Yami was found guilty of killing Hamad bin Ali bin Hamad Lesloom al-Yami following a fight, the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

His beheading in the southern Najran region brings to 86 the number of Saudis and foreigners executed in kingdom, which has one of the world's highest execution tolls.

Rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are also punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Saudi Arabia beheads 83rd person of 2014, tops Amnesty list for executions

Saudia Arabia beheaded a Pakistani man on Wednesday, marking the 83rd beheading this year – the most in more than five years.

The unnamed man was convicted of smuggling "large quantities" of heroin, the kingdom's state news agency reported. He is the 13th prisoner from Pakistan to be executed in Saudi Arabia since mid-October.

A tally of official announcements from the Saudi Press regarding beheadings brings the total to 83 in 2014. The majority of those executed were convicted of drug smuggling.

Amnesty International claims Saudi Arabia has one of the highest execution rates in the world. The organisation lists 79 executions during 2012-2013, and 82 in 2010-2011. The human rights group says at least 69 people were executed in the state in 2009.

Topping the list of highest number of executions this year are Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the US.

However, these figures do not include China. The number of people executed in this country is a state secret, but the US-based humanitarian organisation Dui Hua Foundation estimates that 2,400 people would have been executed during 2014.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Sharia – Islamic law – and applies the death penalty for a number of crimes including murder, rape, apostasy and witchcraft. The kingdom has come under fire from human rights groups in the past for executions carried out for non-fatal crimes.

To put Saudi Arabia's execution rate into perspective, the Kingdom has a population of about 30,770,000. If the United States executed criminals at the same rate, we would have executed 863 in 2014.
