Jose E. Reyes Sentenced in 2014 TX Occult-Linked Slaying of Corriann Cervantes

Teens charged in girl's death that was linked with occult

Two teens have been charged with capital murder in the death of a girl whose killing has been linked with the occult.

Jose E. Reyes, 17, was arrested on Sunday in the NASA-area slaying, Houston police said on Monday. A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Monday.

They were charged in the death of a 15-year-old girl identified by medical examiners as Corriann Cervantes, whose body was found about 4:10 a.m. Saturday in the 16400 block of El Camino Real, between El Dorado Boulevard and Bay Area Boulevard.

A criminal complaint accuses Reyes of kidnapping the girl on Wednesday then striking her on the head with the lid of a toilet tank.

Cervantes was found in a vacant apartment. A person there saw a door that was open. The teen was partially clothed, had head trauma and appeared to have been sexually assaulted, Houston police said.

Evidence on the girl's body and in the apartment indicated occult activity had occurred, police said.

Reyes is in the Harris County jail with no bail. The 16-year-old, who's unidentified because of his age, was referred to the Harris County Juvenile Probation Authority.

Official: Deal with devil prompted girl's killing

Two teenage boys were hoping to make a deal with the devil when they sexually assaulted and killed a 15-year-old suburban Houston girl in a satanic ritual, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Seventeen-year-old Jose E. Reyes and a 16-year-old boy are accused of disfiguring the girl's body, including carving an upside down crucifix on her stomach.

Reyes and the 16-year-old boy, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, each face a capital murder charge for the death of Corriann Cervantes.

Authorities say that after the boys lured Cervantes to a vacant apartment in southeast Houston on Feb. 5, they hit her with an ashtray, a toilet tank lid and a window blind rod, strangled her and also stabbed her in the face with a screwdriver.

"What happened in that vacant apartment was sadistic. What will eventually happen in the ... courtroom will be justice," Harris County prosecutor John Jordan told reporters Tuesday.

Reyes, who was arrested Sunday, made a brief court appearance Tuesday. He is being held without bond in the Harris County Jail.

His attorney, Jerald Graber, said he could not comment on the case because he had just been appointed by the court and knew few of the details related to the charges.

The 16-year-old boy is in being held in a juvenile detention facility.

Jordan said the younger boy had heard Reyes claim that he had sold his soul to the devil and the 16-year-old wanted to do the same.

"The juvenile inquired ... that if he committed a murder, would that basically initiate him into being able to sell his soul to the devil, of which Mr. Reyes said, 'Yes,'" Jordan said.

Jordan said that at one point during the assault, Cervantes yelled out to them, "Why are you doing this to me?"

The boys held down Cervantes to keep her from escaping, authorities said.

Authorities are still trying to determine if Cervantes died from strangulation, the blows she received to her head or from internal injuries from the sexual assault, Jordan said.

According to police, Cervantes' partly clothed body was discovered early Saturday when a resident of the apartment building noticed the door to the vacant unit was open.

Jordan said Reyes' family went to authorities after the teenager made "some admissions" to them about what had happened.

"They did the right thing. Clearly they were offended by his conduct," he said.

At Reyes' home, "there were some signs of devil worship and things of that nature," Jordan said.

Authorities said Cervantes and the 16-year-old boy had apparently attended the same school.

Tiffany Waters, Cervantes' mother, said Tuesday by telephone that she and her family did not wish to speak with reporters at this time.

Because Reyes and the younger boy are both under 18, they are not eligible for the death penalty, Jordan said. No decisions have been made by prosecutors on whether the 16-year-old will be tried as an adult.

Murdered teen's family speaks out for first time since her death

For the first time, we're hearing from the family of the Clear Lake teenager who was brutally murdered, allegedly by two teenage boys who claimed they were making a deal with the devil.

Corriann Cervantes' family says what happened to her should be a warning to others.

At a media appearance on Friday, an aunt read aloud a Bible verse, "For I am persuaded by neither death nor life nor angels..."

It's an affirmation of faith amid allegations of a brutal and possibly satanic sex assault and murder. Corriann Cervantes, 15, a popular, church-going tenth grader, was found dead on Saturday in a vacant apartment in Clear Lake.

Her aunt Michelle Abernethy said, "What happened to her was evil. It wasn't just the boys doing this. It was demonic forces working through her."

Police say it took days to find the body. They believe Cervantes was murdered on Wednesday. Her parents last saw her on Tuesday.

"It was a normal day," said Corriann's father, Cory Cervantes. "She wanted to go out and we told her to come back home, make sure she came back home, and she just never came back. We tried calling her and that's when we filed a missing person's report."

Two suspects -- Jose Reyes, 17, and a juvenile -- are accused of her murder and are being held without bond. Prosecutors say they confessed, saying it was part of a deal with the devil.

This family says they don't remember ever meeting the suspects.

"Really watch who your kids are hanging out with because this could have happened to anybody's child," cautioned Cory Cervantes, the victim's aunt.

The Cervantes family is now making funeral arrangements. Her two siblings -- a 13-year-old boy, and a 10-year-old girl have lost their older sister -- a girl who loved taking photos, listening to music and playing soccer.

Cory said, "Being our firstborn, she is very special to us. She had so much life in her. She loved her friends, her family."

Cervantes' family identified her body at the medical examiner's office on Friday. They say they would like to forget those gruesome images and remember her as she was -- a sweet, friendly high school student with a lot of potential.

The family is still making plans for the funeral, but they say they would like to hold a large public event, because would like to include many community members who have offered their support and condolences.

Juvenile accused in satanic killing to remain behind bars

A teenager taken into custody for the possibly satanic murder of a 15-year-old girl is staying locked up.

A custody hearing for the boy was held Tuesday morning in juvenile court. Police say the teen and 17-year-old Jose Reyes killed Corriann Cervantes earlier this month as part of a satanic ritual.

Reyes is charged with capital murder. The 16-year-old who was in court Tuesday has not been officially charged yet, but prosecutors say charges are pending.

Teen claims Clear Lake murder suspect raped her last year

There are new developments in the brutal killing of a Clear Lake teen. Eyewitness News was in court when the 16-year-old suspect went before a judge, but it's the 17-year-old suspect we're hearing new allegations against. Another young girl claims Jose Reyes attacked her, and raped her.

"It could have been me that was dead right now. That's the worst thing," she said.

This 17-year-old claims capital murder suspect Jose Reyes raped her in a Webster park last February.

"He took a part of me that I will never get back, ever," she said. "I'm never going to be OK, and her family will never be OK, ever."

The girl reported the alleged assault to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, but charges were never filed. A sheriff's office spokesperson says the alleged victim and her mother missed multiple scheduled interviews, so the case was closed.

Now, almost exactly one year later, Reyes is in the Harris County Jail. His alleged accomplice, a 16-year-old, is locked up in a juvenile detention center, where on Wednesday a judge ruled he will remain for now. Both teens are accused of brutally sexually assaulting and murdering 15-year-old Coriann Cervantes in a possibly satanic ritual.

"She was young. She was innocent," the teen raped said. "It should have never came to this. I feel so sorry for her family."

This alleged victim admits she was drunk and high during the alleged assault, but she says she was still conscious when Reyes allegedly raped her, then directed three of his friends to do the same.

She said, "I know him and what he's capable of."

She says she's speaking out to show support for Cervantes and her family.

She said, "At first I didn't want to do it, honestly, because I didn't want all this stress but they wanted me to do it honestly. They were like thank you so much for doing this."

On Wednesday night, some members of the community gathered for a memorial in Cervantes' honor.

"There's always been evil out there," community member Ashlee Brown said.

The vigil was also a spiritual lesson of good and evil.

"Someone that I knew, someone so close. Is just gone now," one attendee said.

16-year-old who claimed to make deal with devil to stand trial as adult in girl's death

Victor Alas stood quietly in Harris County juvenile court Wednesday, listening as prosecutors made their case to a judge as to why the 16-year-old boy should be certified to stand trial on capital murder charges as an adult.

He had, Harris County Assistant District Attorney Martina Longoria said, helped kill 15-year-old Corriann Cervantes in the "most heinous, violent, and intimate kinds of offense a person can commit," all as part of apparent attempt to sell his soul to the devil.

Moments after Longoria finished speaking, Harris County Juvenile Judge Glenn Devlin waived jurisdiction of the case, meaning that Alas will stand trial in adult court along with his 17-year-old co-defendant, Jose Reyes.

On Feb. 8, police arrived before dawn at a second-floor apartment at The Bays, a complex on El Camino Real in the Clear Lake area, after a caller reported finding a body in a vacant apartment.

Devlin listened as Houston Police Det. Mark Condon explained that the caller, who had been heading to buy soda to power through an all-night video game marathon, had spotted the vacant apartment's door ajar, and looked inside.

There was a dead girl inside, and a scene of chaos, Condon said, explaining what he found after being dispatched to investigate the call.

Condon arrived at the apartment about 4:30 a.m. and found Cervantes' partially clothed body lying on the ground, porcelain shards strewn about her and embedded in her head. Authorities said she had been bludgeoned with a toilet tank lid and an upside-down cross had been carved into her stomach.

That was just a fraction of the injuries Condon described to Devlin, explaining that Cervantes also had been stabbed - investigators later learned from a screwdriver - in the torso and head more than 60 times. She also appeared to have been whipped and then sexually assaulted with an object, he said. The killers had also used her blood to paint a pentagram on one wall, and an upside-down cross on another. Police eventually learned the slaying took place late the night on Feb. 4 or early in the morning of Feb. 5, days before her body was discovered.

Condon said that police first guessed the victim to be in her 30's, though local medical examiners later identified her as Corriann Cervantes, a raven-haired, round-cheeked girl with blue-green eyes who had attended Clear Lake High School, and later, Clear Lake Alternative Path. Her cause of death was multiple blunt and sharp force injuries, authorities said.

Police honed in on the two boys soon after the incident, arresting them days after the discovery of Cervantes' body. Alas told a school counselor he might be arrested for murder, Condon said. Reyes' sister also spoke with authorities, telling them that Reyes had come home and told her that he and Alas had killed a girl.

Condon said Reyes had warned her, "She was going to be next."

Cervantes was killed after the three had sex, Condon said Reyes eventually told investigators. Reyes also told investigators he told Alas that he had sold his soul to the devil and Alas wanted to as well. Reyes also told authorities Alas choked Cervantes with a belt for 35 minutes, until she was blue in the face.

In court, two of Cervantes' relatives listened as Longoria argued that Alas met the criteria to be tried as an adult. In certification hearings, juvenile judges review evidence about whether there is probable cause to believe the person committed the offense, whether the crime was committed in an aggressive or premeditated manner, whether it was committed against a person or property, the sophistication and maturity of the child, and whether protection of the public requires adult prosecution.

Condon also said in court that Alas had a criminal background, had been a suspect in a Galveston burglary where thousands of dollars of cash and jewelry had been stolen and had faced charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, failing to attend school and marijuana possession.

Alas had not been amenable to programs offered to him while on probation, Longoria said.

Brian Fischer, the attorney representing Alas, argued that Devlin should not certify the boy as an adult. He said that while being evaluated, Alas had shown no evidence of psychotic behavior, did not have any gang affiliations and would benefit from a highly-structured residential program.

"There are adequate resources in the juvenile system to provide for the protection of the public and rehabilitation of the juvenile," Fischer said.

Eight relatives and supporters of Alas came to the hearing, but declined to speak to reporters. Two of Cervantes' family members attended as well, also declining to speak to reporters.

Alas will be held in the juvenile detention center until he turns 17, at which point he will be transferred to an adult detention center, prosecutors said.

Trial begins for teen charged in occult killing

HOUSTON – Opening statements have begun in the Houston capital murder trial of a teenager accused with another teen of sexually assaulting a girl and killing her in a satanic ritual.

The trial began Monday for 18-year-old Jose E. Reyes, who prosecutors say killed 15-year-old Corriann Cervantes in February in a vacant apartment southeast of Houston. A 16-year-old boy also is charged and is expected to stand trial later.

Reyes faces a life sentence if convicted but would be eligible for parole after 40 years.

Prosecutors say the two boys were hoping to make a deal with the devil when they disfigured the girl's body, including carving an upside down crucifix on her stomach.

Defense attorney Jerald Graber told the Houston Chronicle the defense team would "zealously represent" the teen.

Satanic killing trial expected to go to jury on Thursday

Jurors Thursday are expected to hear closing arguments in the capital murder trial of Jose E. Reyes, who is accused of killing a 15-year-old girl earlier this year in a satanic ritual.

The 18-year-old faces an automatic life sentence if convicted of killing Corriann Cervantes in a vacant apartment in Clear Lake on Feb. 4.

Reyes told at least two people that he and a friend, Victor Alas, strangled, bludgeoned and stabbed the girl in a bid to sell their souls to the devil, according to prosecutors.

On Wednesday, the jury saw graphic autopsy photos of Cervantes, the right side of her face caved in, allegedly by the heavy porcelain lid of a toilet tank. Reyes told a friend he broke the lid over her head and face while hitting her after she tried to flee.

Prosecutors said Cervantes was alive when Reyes and Alas also gouged out her right eye with the plastic rod used to adjust window blinds.

Testimony showed that Cervantes and the two teens left a party where they were drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana and taking prescription pills to have sex in a vacant apartment nearby. One witness said the two teens were holding up the girl as they walked out.

While the three were having sex, according to testimony, Alas began strangling the girl with a belt, and Reyes stabbed her in the face and torso dozens of times with a screwdriver.

The teen also had an upside cross carved into her abdomen and had been sexually assaulted, authorities said.

Prosecutors and the defense are expected to rest Thursday after what is expected to be brief testimony from two witnesses.

The defense is expected to remind jurors that because Alas also has been implicated, Reyes' guilt cannot be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. Defense attorneys also will ask that the jury consider a lesser charge of murder, instead of capital murder. If Reyes is convicted of a lesser offense, the jurors would decide his punishment.

The trial, in state District Judge Brock Thomas' court, began Monday. Jurors are expected to begin deliberating after closing arguments.

I think he faces an automatic life with the possibility for parole after 40 years sentence. Didn't Texas remove the LWOP sentence for all under 18?!
