Police: Good old fashion detective work key to arresting 3 in Taco Bell murder case

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A third person has been charged in connection with the brutal murder of a Montgomery fast food restaurant manager. Montgomery police confirmed the arrest of 22-year-old Gacolby Green Thursday morning.

Green, along with two others who were arrested Monday, is accused of beating and shooting to death 43-year-old Vettia Roche during a robbery at the Taco Bell restaurant where she worked as the night manager. Her body was discovered early Monday morning behind the restaurant on the Atlanta Highway.

Green, 22, of Montgomery, was arrested Wednesday night, according to authorities. It was at that point when he was charged with capital murder. He is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility without bond.

While Green was not an employee of the restaurant, investigators say the two other suspects were. Renauldous Jamal Chisholm and Kenneth Duane Temple, both 19 and of Montgomery, were arrested on Monday following an initial investigation. They also are charged with capital murder.

MPD and Fire Medics were called to the Taco Bell around 7:30 a.m. Monday on a report that a body had been found. When investigators arrived, they found Roche behind the restaurant. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

An initial investigation by the Montgomery Police Department indicates Roche was killed during a robbery while she was leaving the restaurant. Documents show the woman was shot multiple times and struck repeatedly with a car jack.

    Family members say
she was starting a new life with her daughter in Alabama's capital city after losing their home in a tornado in neighboring Mississippi.
Authorities have remained tight-lipped on the case and have declined to shed any light on how they've connected the three suspects to the brutal crime or the relationship between them.

Sources say the three men are friends.

Montgomery Public Safety Director Chris Murphy says the arrests were the result of "good old fashioned police work."

"From the highest levels on down, everybody was involved," he told WSFA. "It would have been very easy to say, 'We've made two arrests. We got them. Now let's move on to the next case.' But, no. They continued to pursue the evidence and they did not stop until everything was resolved and continuing to pursue that evidence developed a third suspect who was very much involved."

He said patrol officers' efforts to expanded the crime scene at the restaurant Monday ended up playing a part in the investigation.

"Some other evidence was able to be located because that crime scene was so wide," he said. "We've developed even stronger partnerships between the divisions of the

Montgomery Police Department... We want to bring justice for this community and closure as well as we can. Nothing replaces the loss of life."

The Taco Bell reopened for the first time Thursday after the brutal crime. Black ribbons are still on the doors of the business as a tribute to Roche.

In the wake of her death, Central Alabama Crimestoppers Director Tony Garrett is urging businesses across the area to create a plan of action.

"It's always good for businesses to train for situations like this. You always think in the back of your mind that it won't happen but it's a possibility and we wanted these businesses to be up in arms basically to day that it won't happen at their establishment because this is what we do to keep it from happening," he said.

Garrett says businesses should change up their routines with bank drops and that employees who close at night should always let someone know when they're leaving and try to keep a minimal amount in back deposits.

"Look for anything suspicious like strange cars or people hanging around. If there's something that you think it out of the ordinary, go ahead and call the police and let them be the judge if it's something to be alarmed about. You can even call and ask police if they can send a patrol car over to drive around the business before you leave," he said.

Central Alabama Crime Stoppers and Montgomery Police do security assessments, visiting area businesses to discuss crime prevention tactics with workers.

A bank fund is set up for the victim's family at Sterling Bank. Donations can be made to the Vettia Roche Account at any branch location.

A memorial service is set for Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 5 p.m. at the church where she was a member, Consuming Fire Ministries on Eastern Boulevard in Montgomery. Her funeral is set for Friday, March 21 in her hometown of Pensacola, Florida.

Roche's death is Montgomery's second homicide of 2014.

Details emerge in Taco Bell manager's killing

Two employees of the Atlanta Highway Taco Bell plotted to rob the restaurant's night manager but killed her when she recognized one of them, according to a police detective's testimony Thursday.

Police and fire medics found Vettia Roche, 43, dead behind the restaurant early in the morning of March 10.

Kenneth Temple and Renauldous Chisholm, both 19, and Gacolby Green, 22, are charged with capital murder in the killing.

Montgomery police detective A.D. Gorum said Temple and Chisholm both worked at Taco Bell and can be seen on the store's video surveillance camera's the night of the killing.

Both told detectives they left the restaurant early, drove away and were almost immediately pulled over because the vehicle's headlights were off, Gorum said.

The officer gave them a verbal warning and let them go, he said.

Based on their statements, the two returned to the Taco Bell to rob Roche, Gorum testified.

Chisholm approached her wearing a jacket and a mask provided by Temple's cousin, Green, and a handgun provided by a third person who has not been charged, he said.

Chisholm told police that after he robbed her, she told him, "I know you. You work at Taco Bell," Gorum said.

Chisholm said he tried to run, she grabbed him, and he shot her twice, Gorum testified.

Chisholm told Temple that she could identify him and they went back to see if she was dead, Gorum said the two told police.

When Chisholm went to turn her over, she bit his hand, and the two began to kick and hit her, Gorum said.

Chisholm and Temple each said the other was responsible for then beating her with a tire iron retrieved from the car, Gorum testified.

The two said Green acted as a lookout, driving up and down Atlanta Highway to check for the presence of police officers, Gorum said.

Green's attorney, Michael Kidd, argued that there was no evidence that Green had any knowledge of the murder and that he could only be seen as an accessory to the robbery. He said that Green should therefore not be charged with capital murder.

Chief Deputy District Attorney said Roche was killed as part of the robbery and that the two crimes could not be separated.

District Court Judge Pamela Higgins bound the case over to the grand jury Thursday, and the three remain jailed without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

Taco Bell manager murder case bound over to grand jury

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The three suspects charged in the murder of a Montgomery Taco Bell manager in March appeared in court Thursday for their preliminary hearings.

Gacolby Green, 22, and two Taco Bell employees, 19-year-olds Renauldous Jamal Chisholm and Kenneth Duane Temple, are all charged with capital murder in the case.

3 men accused in shooting, beating death of Taco Bell manager indicted

    By Erin Edgemon
    AL.com

Three men accused of killing a Taco Bell night manager in the commission of a robbery in Montgomery were indicted on murder charges, court records show.

Rendauldous Chisholm, 21, and Kenneth Temple, 21, were indicted on the charge of capital murder, court records show. Gacolby Green, 23, is charged with murder.

The men were indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on Nov. 6. The indictment was filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court today.

The men are accused of killing Vettia Roche, 43, during a robbery outside the Atlanta Highway Taco Bell on March 10, 2014.

Chisholm and Temple were employees of the Atlanta Highway Taco Bell where Roche worked as a night manager.

During an April 2014 preliminary hearing, Montgomery Police Detective A.D. Gorum said Chisholm and Temple admitted to shooting and beating Roche to death.

Gorum said Chisholm told police he and Temple were planning to rob the Taco Bell of its night deposit. They decided to rob Roche after getting off work on March 10 because they thought she was slow, he said.

During his initial interview, Gorum said Chisholm admitted to wearing a mask and jacket and robbing Roche at gunpoint.

When he approached her, though, Roche recognized him and said "Hey, I know you. You work at Taco Bell," Gorum said.

Chisholm told police he tried to run away, but Roche grabbed him causing him to fire two shots.

Gorum said those gunshots hit Roche in the forehead and neck.

Chisholm ran back to the car where Temple was sitting behind the restaurant, he said, and they decided to go back to see if Roche was still alive.

When Chisholm got close to her, Roche bit him in the hand, Gorum said, adding police took photos of the injury. The men then kicked Roche in the abdomen several times.

Chisholm then claims Temple grabbed a car jack out of his trunk and went back to kill Roche.

Temple claims it was Chisholm who wielded the jack, Gorum said.

Roche's official cause of death was deemed multiple physical trauma, he said, which doesn't specify whether the gunshots or the beating killed her. Roche was hit in the head with the car jack.

Gorum said the car jack was located in a drainage ditch near a home on 6th Street where the suspects met after the homicide. Police found large sums of money in the homes or vehicles of the three suspects.
Bloody Taco Bell uniforms were also seized from Temple and Chisholm.

Green admitted to police to helping Temple and Chisholm plan a robbery and serving as a lookout for police, Gorum said.

Chisolm and Green are set to be arraigned in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Nov. 19. Temple will be appointed an attorney in a Nov. 23 hearing.

The court set Green's bond at $200,000. He was previously charged with capital murder and held without bond.

Both Chisolm and Temple are being held without bond.

    Renauldous Chisholm
's trial on the charge of capital murder is set to begin in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Aug. 22, court records show.

Chisholm and Kenneth Temple, who were 19 at the time, worked at the Taco Bell on Atlanta Highway in Montgomery at the time of the homicide.

According to court documents filed this week, the state is seeking the death penalty against Chisholm due to the "aggravating circumstances."

The murder was committed during a robbery and was "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel as compared to other capital offenses," the state said in its motion.

The capital murder trial for one of three men accused of killing a Montgomery Taco Bell manager during a March 2014 robbery has been continued.

Renauldous Chisholm's trial was set to begin Monday in Montgomery County Circuit Court, but court records show the trial was postponed to Oct. 17.

The reason for the continuance wasn't listed in Judge Truman Hobbs' order.

Trial date reset for suspect in Montgomery Taco Bell murder

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Following the denial of his youthful offender status, one of the three suspects in the March 2014 death of a Montgomery Taco Bell manager has had his trial date reset.

According to court documents, Renauldous Chisholm’s new trial date has been set for July 17 at 8:30 a.m.

A grand jury indicted Chisholm and Kenneth Temple in 2015 on capital murder charges. A third suspect, Gacolby Green, is charged with murder.

Montgomery police say the three suspects murdered Vettia Roche outside the Taco Bell restaurant on Atlanta Highway where she worked as a manager. Temple and Chisholm worked with Roche.

Chisholm’s attorneys filed a motion to have the trial date moved after the state announced it would be seeking the death penalty. Chisholm was also ordered to undergo a mental evaluation, which has not yet been completed.

In the motion, Chisholm's attorneys asked for additional time to evaluate the recommendations and further investigate the defendant's mental state following the evaluation.

Temple has a youthful offender application hearing on March 3 at 8:30 a.m. Currently, his trial is set for July 26.

Green’s trial will be scheduled at a later date. It was previously set for September 2016.

One defendant sentenced to life in gruesome 2014 Taco Bell murder

    By Jennifer Horton
    WSFA

MONTGOMERY, AL - It's the first signs of justice following a barbaric killing in East Montgomery.

Vettia Roche’s body was left in the drive thru after being horrifically beaten and shot to death following her shift as manager at the Taco Bell on Atlanta Highway in 2014.

Two of the three suspects in Roche’s murder, Renauldous Chisholm and Kenneth Temple, worked for her at the fast food restaurant, and asked to leave early, which Roche granted.

“They came back knowing she would be the only person closing out that night,” stated Montgomery District Attorney Daryl Bailey.

Bailey said Chisholm, Temple, and Temple’s cousin Gacolby Green planned an armed robbery of the night cash deposit.

“When she came out, they confronted her and probably some type of struggle ensued ,” Bailey said describing the armed robbery. “They were armed with a gun and a carjack, which they used to beat her and shoot her, and take the money from the business.”

Bailey calls this murder one of the most gruesome he’s seen as a veteran prosecutor, adding Roche was beaten in the head with the metal carjack. Investigators say Chisholm pulled the trigger.

Due to the sheer brutality of Roche’s untimely death, the District Attorney’s Office was seeking the death penalty in Chisholm’s capital murder case – something Roche’s family strongly opposed.

“It was extremely important to the victim’s family,” Bailey said of the ultimate outcome of Chisholm’s case. “They didn’t want to live through a trial. This is a case where we were seeking the death penalty, and they were very opposed to the death penalty and obviously I take into account their feelings.”

Bailey described the family’s wishes as one of several factors in offering Chisholm a plea deal for murder.

“That was an overwhelming factor for us,” Bailey said of the family’s request. “The defendant's age was a factor, his lack of a criminal history, and the fact that they were willing plea to murder and not seek parole for 25 years -- I think that was in the best interest of the state.”

Chisholm and Temple were 19 at the time of the murder, both were denied youthful offender status.

Chisholm was sentenced to life in prison. Bailey strongly doubts he will ever be given parole when considering the facts of this case.

“He will die in prison,” Bailey stated. “That’s a shame for a wasted life, unfortunately we see that time and time again.”

Bailey couldn’t comment further on the disposition of Temple and Green’s cases, as both are pending trial.

“What they did to that woman who was trying to earn a living, who came over to Alabama as a refugee from Katrina - starting her life over," Bailey said of Roche. “She had given these guys a break and this is how they paid her back.”

Roche left behind a daughter, who was in her teens when Roche was murdered.

Final suspect in Montgomery Taco Bell murder found guilty, sentenced

    By WFSA News Staff

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The final suspect charged in connection with the 2014 robbery and brutal murder of a Montgomery Taco Bell manager pleaded guilty and will spend the rest of his life in prison, according to court documents.

Gacolby Green was among three suspects charged with the murder of Vettia Roche. The other two were Renauldous Chisholm and Kenneth Temple. Green is Temple’s cousin.

Roche’s body was left in the drive thru after she was horrifically beaten and shot to death following her shift at the Atlanta Highway fast food restaurant.

Chisholm and Temple worked for Roche and had asked to leave early the night of her murder. She granted their request.

“They came back knowing she would be the only person closing out that night,” Montgomery District Attorney Daryl Bailey said in a 2017 interview, adding that the three planned an armed robbery of the night cash deposit.

“When she came out, they confronted her and probably some type of struggle ensued,” Bailey said describing the armed robbery. “They were armed with a gun and a carjack, which they used to beat her and shoot her, and take the money from the business.”

Bailey said Roche, who survived Hurricane Katrina and moved to Alabama to start her life over, died after the suspects beat her in the head with the metal carjack, then shot her.

Chisholm and Temple were 19 at the time of the murder, but both were denied youthful offender status.

Chisholm was sentenced to life in prison
in 2017 with Bailey saying he doubted the convict would ever get out considering the facts of the case.

Temple pleaded guilty in May and was given a sentence of life with the possibility of parole, the same sentence as Green.
