Suspects in triple-murder robbery were fresh from prison

Two suspects in a triple murder-robbery at a convenience store in rural North Carolina were released from prison — one after serving nine years — just a matter of weeks before they were arrested in connection with the April 1 slayings.

The crime took place as three employees at Hustle Mart in Farmville, N.C. — including the teenage son of the owner and his two cousins — were preparing to close for the night. Three armed men with their faces all or partly covered covered burst in the store to rob it. They also apparently shot the employees despite no obvious signs that the victims had tried to resist. A customer discovered the bodies shortly after the perpetrators left, around 10 p.m.

The three victims were Mokbel Mohamed Almujanhi, 16 – known at his high school as "Sam" — Nabil Nasser Saeed Al’mogannahi, 26, and Gaber Alawi, 24.

Surveillance video from the scene of the crime and tips from the public led police to arrest four suspects on April 4: Antwan Andre Anthony, 29; Xavier Montel Shamble, 19; Willie Whitehead, 23, and a fourth male whose name was not disclosed because he is a minor.

Each is charged with three counts of murder and a combination of other crimes including first-degree kidnapping, robbery, and possession of firearm by a felon.

One of those suspects, Antwan Anthony, had spent most of the past decade in Connecticut prisons before being released on Jan. 21, according to a report by the Hartford Courant, citing prison records. He was allowed to serve out a five-year parole in North Carolina where he has family, the report said.

Anthony was initially jailed in 2002 on second-degree assault charges, the paper reported. He had three subsequent convictions, while in prison, for assaulting prison guards — each time extending his sentence, the report said.

Anthony was "a very difficult inmate," according to a Connecticut correctional official quoted by Greenville area newspaper, the Daily Reflector. The official said that his behavior prompted more than 100 disciplinary reports while he was incarcerated in that state.

Corrections personnel told the Courant that Anthony committed a fourth assault, in Sept. 2010, that was not charged.

State police were called into investigate after Anthony allegedly head-butted an officer while being transported, and an arrest warrant was submitted to the state's attorney's office in Tolland, a spokesman for the union that represents Connecticut’s corrections officers told the Courant.

"We had no idea why he wasn't prosecuted and that didn't sit well with the men and women in the state prison system,'' Larry Dorman, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 4 which, represents prison guards, told the Courant.

Another of the four suspects, Xavier Montel Shamble, 19, had been out of a North Carolina prison for just three weeks when he allegedly took part in the crime that left three young men dead, records from the North Carolina Department of Corrections show.

The records also reveal a history of repeat convictions for the third suspect, Willie Whitehead, 23, who had served time for offenses including robbery with a dangerous weapon and larceny dating back to 2004. He was released after serving time for his last conviction -- for possession of a weapon by a felon -- last August.

The three adult suspects are being held in Pitt County Detention Center in North Carolina. Police did not release the whereabouts of the underage suspect.

In surveillance videos, the victims, whose family is originally from Yemen, did not appear to put up any kind of resistance to the robbers during the April 1 encounter, said Christy Wallace, public information director for the Pitts County sheriff’s office.

“There wasn’t anything they could have done differently,” she said.

2 year anniversary of Hustle Mart triple murder

FARMVILLE, N.C. - Tuesday marks two years since robbers stormed into the Farmville Hustle Mart and shot and killed three people.

The victims were closing shop for the night when Pitt County deputies say three other men came inside, robbed them of cash and cigarettes, and then shot them execution style.

Charged with the murders are Antwan Anthony, Xavier Shamble, Willie Whitehead and 16-year-old Raekwon Blount.

Pitt County District Attorney Kimberly Robb expects their capital murder trials to begin this fall, where she says video evidence will be key.

"It's rare that you have an entire crime captured on video for us to see and really go back and watch again and again, and see the culpability of the different parties involved," said Kimberly Robb, Pitt County District Attorney.

    Trials set in triple slaying

    By Kristin Zachary
    The Daily Reflector

Attorneys set a February trial date today for the accused triggerman in a 2012 armed robbery that left three convenience store workers dead.

District Attorney Kimberly Robb said she expects the Feb. 16 trial for Antwan Anthony, 31, to take two months since it is a capital case.

Anthony, through defense attorney Terry Alford, entered a plea of not guilty to all charges during the morning hearing in the Pitt County Detention Center courtroom. He is charged in the shootings deaths of a Farmville teen and two cousins who had relocated to the area to assist with the family's convenience store business.

Mokbel Mohamed Almujanahi, 16; Nabil Nasser Saeed Al'mogannahi, 26; and Gaber Alawi, 24, were preparing to close the Hustle Mart-3 when armed robbers entered the business about 10 p.m. April 1, 2012.

Anthony and two others, 21-year-old Xavier Shamble and 16-year-old Raekwon Blount, allegedly went into the store another man, Willie Whitehead Jr., 26, waited outside in the getaway car. Court records show Shamble and Blount in interviews with detectives identified Anthony as the shooter. The four allegedly fled with cigarettes and cash.

Also today, lawyers set an April 20 trial date for Whitehead. That trial also is expected to last two months.

Cases against Shamble and Blount were continued to June 2, 2015.

Victim’s family says change in Hustle Mart trial unfair and unneeded

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — One of the suspects in the Hustle Mart murders says he wants new prosecutors for his trial. Antwan Anthony, who is charged with three counts of murder, claims the Pitt County District Attorney has a bias in the case.

The victim’s family says they’ve worked closely with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney since the murder in April 2012. They hope the agencies stay on the case so they can move forward as scheduled.

“It won’t be the same because those people lived with it,” says Ahmad Almaganahi, whose brother and nephew were killed in the robbery. “They have spent time with it. They have looked at all the evidence, they have dealt with it. They have seen the crime. They are more familiar than anybody else. Why would they want to take them out? .”

Almaganahi says he is frustrated that Anthony asked for a change in prosecution.

“They’re trying to work for their benefits but they’re not looking out for the family who got hurts benefits,” says Almaganahi. “It’s not benefits. It’s justice.”

Anthony’s attorney says Pitt County District Attorney Kimberly Robb is partial to the case because her family was threatened as a result of the arrests. Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks was also threatened by the Hustle Mart suspects. He says this does not have anything to do with how business is handled.

“We get threatened quite often,” says Elks. “Any time we arrest a high-profile case or a violent offender, often times a threat will be made as you’re leaving the courtroom or the Magistrate’s Office. I get letters on a regular basis, people threatening my officers as well as me. We continue doing our job. It’s what we do.”

Capital punishment is on the table for Anthony. Almaganahi says he hopes the case goes to trial in September as scheduled so his family can try to find some peace.

“We could just move forward because this just keeps delaying,” Almaganahi says. “They’re talking about a motion. How about our emotions? How do we live with ourselves each day?”

A judge continued the motion until Friday, July 17. WNCT plans to be in the courtroom when a decision is made and will update you with more details as they become available.

Judge denies murder suspect’s request to remove DA from case

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — One of the suspects in a brutal Pitt County triple homicide appeared in Pitt County court Tuesday where a judge ruled the District Attorney’s office will remain on his case.

Willie Whitehead, 27, is charged in the murder of three people at the Farmville Hustle Mart in April, 2012.

Today, Whitehead and his attorney filed a motion to recuse District Attorney Kimberly Robb and anyone from her prosecution from his case. This comes after Whitehead allegedly made threats to Robb and her family after his arrest.

The defense said they don’t believe the DA will try the case in a fair and reasonable manner, saying Robb could be “overwhelmed and consumed by passion,” in Whitehead’s case .

The defense stated they don’t want Whitehead to be tired for the alleged threat he made against Robb and her family, and that justice could only be maintained with another prosecutor.

The prosecution stated they’re not supposed to be a neutral party, but rather make sure justice is served and they must do so fairly.

Prosecutors stated in court that it’s not Robb’s fault if Whitehead isn’t the perfect human, and they have the right to point that out to the jury. They stated their plan remained unchanged on ho they would prosecute the case, before and after the threats.

The judge denied Whitehead’s request, leaving Robb and her office as the prosecutor on the case.

Whitehead is charged along with three others, Antwan Anthony, Xavier Shamble, and Raekwon Blount. They all face trial in 2015.

Anthony previously filed a pre-trial motion to have Robb removed from his case, which a judge also denied.

NC judge rules man competent for trial in triple slaying

A state judge ruled Friday that a man charged with murder in the slayings of three convenience store workers in Pitt County more than three years ago is competent to stand trial.

Local media outlets report that Judge Robert Hobgood made the ruling at a hearing in Greenville and set the trial for Antwon Anthony for February 8. The state is seeking the death penalty.

Anthony is charged in the April 1, 2012 shooting deaths of three employees at a convenience store in the community of Farmville.

The trial, which had been scheduled to start in September, had been delayed so there could be a mental evaluation of Anthony.

The judge said Friday he had read the reports of psychiatrists and issued a court finding that the defendant was faking symptoms of mental illness.

But he ordered the defendant to be taken to the mental health unit at Central Prison in Raleigh and have his medication monitored until the trial. Last summer, Anthony's attorneys said they would mount a defense of diminished mental capacity.

Anthony is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm. Attorneys have said the trial could last two months.

Prosecutors say that Gaber Alawi, 24, Nabil Nasser Saeed Al'mogannahi, 26, and Mokbel "Sam" Mohamed Almujanahi, 16, a student at Farmville Central High School, were killed in the incident.

Three other defendants are charged with murder in the slayings.

Jury selection begins in Antwon Anthony murder trial

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The trial began for the accused trigger-man in the 2012 Hustle Mart murders Monday morning.

Antwon Anthony is accused of killing three convenience store workers execution-style in Farmville.

The last time Anthony was in Pitt County, he was handcuffed and wearing a spit mask, but that wasn’t the case Monday. Anthony came into the courtroom with no handcuffs on.

Monday morning, more than ninety jurors sat in the courtroom and waited to be selected. The judge ordered thirty jurors to sit in the juror lounge and wait. He then sent ninety jurors home to return at a later date. Thirty jurors will have to wait until next Friday.

More than ten jurors were dismissed due to physical or mental disabilities.

Anthony’s attorneys expect jury selection to last two to three weeks.

If convicted, Anthony could face the death penalty.

Antwan Anthony sentenced to death for murder of three Hustle Mart employees

The jury in the Antwan Anthony case has sentenced the convicted murderer of three Farmville Hustle Mart employees in 2012 to death. The jury in the case announced its decision to a judge Tuesday afternoon.

The judge in the case gave the jury extensive instructions before handing the sentencing case to them to determine a verdict. The jury got the case late Friday and briefly deliberated before adjourning for the weekend.

It took the jury one hour to return a verdict in the murder trial, finding Anthony guilty on all counts during the April 1, 2012 robbery of the Farmville Hustle Mart. Anthony is guilty of three counts of first degree murder, three counts of first degree felony murder and three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

According to Pitt County deputies, four armed robbers, including Anthony, entered the Hustle Mart in. Deputies said three employees -- 16-year-old Mokbel "Sam" Mohamed Almujanahi, 24-year-old Gaber Alawi, and 26-year-old Nabil Nasser Saeed Al'mogannahi -- were shot and killed.

Investigators arrested four suspects in the triple shooting: Raekwon Terrell Blount of Snow Hill, Xavier Shamble of Farmville, Willie Odell Whitehead, Jr.of Pinetops, and Anthony, who is from Bethel.

The last time someone was sentenced to death in Pitt County was when Mark Squires was sentenced in 2000. Sammy Perkins was the last person from Pitt County to die while on death row. Two others from Pitt County are currently on death row.

Hustle Mart Trial: Judge formally sentences Antwan Anthony to death penalty

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The judge formally sentenced Antwan Anthony to death, following the jury’s recommendations.

The jury presented the judge with their decision after seven and a half hours of deliberations spread out over three days.

They told the judge the factors the defense presented to save Anthony from execution do not outweigh the factors the state presented.

Video captured Anthony’s reaction to the sentencing decision and then the victim’s family’s.

The same jury convicted Anthony of three counts of first-degree murder for the Hustle Mart murders back in 2012. Surveillance video shows Anthony shooting three people execution style at the convenience store in Farmville.

Before this trial even started, Anthony also took a plea deal for two-separate murders in Edgecombe County.

During this case’s deliberations, the jury asked for testimonies, video and phone conversations.

The last time someone in Pitt County was sentenced to the death penalty was in 2000.
