Kyron Rayshawn Templeton Sentenced in 2013 TX Stabbing Deaths of Gail Sandidge and Harris Teel

Charges upgraded against Longview man accused in hospital stabbings

Charges against a Longview man in connection to a fatal hospital stabbing spree were upgraded to capital murder Friday, one day before his 23rd birthday.

Kyron Templeton is accused of stabbing five people Nov. 26 in a rampage at a Good Shepherd Medical Center facility that left two people dead. Nurse Gail Sandidge, 57, and 82-year-old Harris Teel — who died days later on Dec. 5 — were killed in the attack.

Templeton was originally charged with murder and four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon but will face the capital murder and three aggravated assault charges.

Capital murder is a charge in which a jury can issue the death penalty.

It was not immediately clear when Templeton was arraigned. Alfonso Charles, judge of the 124th District Court, sealed information relating to the case.

“There is a gag order in that case,” Gregg County District Clerk Barbara Duncan said late Friday afternoon.

Duncan said she told her employees to seal the case after receiving word from Charles.

Calls placed to Charles on Friday afternoon were not immediately returned, and District Attorney Carl Dorrough did not immediately respond to a request for information.

Templeton is being held in the county jail on bonds totaling $2.5 million.

Templeton was at the hospital because his mother was scheduled to have a procedure the morning of the stabbing, according to Good Shepherd Medical Center CEO Steve Altmiller.

Court records show a search warrant to obtain Templeton’s DNA was filed the same day in the Gregg County District Clerk’s Office.

According to the search warrant, Templeton repeatedly told police that “they” were trying to kill his mother.

Trial reset in case of man accused of fatally stabbing GSMC nurse, visitor

The capital murder trial of a Longview man accused of fatally stabbing a nurse and a visitor in a Longview surgical center was set Friday for early next year.

Kyron Rayshawn Templeton, 23, also faces three aggravated assault charges stemming from the Nov. 26, 2013, incident in Good Shepherd Medical Center’s Ambulatory Surgical Center.

He could face the death penalty if prosecutors opt to press for capital punishment. District Attorney Carl Dorrough typically does not disclose whether he will take that option until trial.

Templeton, whose mother was having surgery in the Medical Plaza that morning, is accused of going on a rampage in the unit.

Nurse Gail Sandidge, 57, and visitor Harris Teel, 82, died of wounds sustained in the attack.

Nurse Karen Bobo and visitors Teresa Allison and Melissa Simms were wounded by the attacker. Templeton’s aggravated assault trial is concurrent with the Jan. 9 trial, Gregg County records show.

District Judge Alfonso Charles previously issued a gag order on the case. Friday’s action was the third time the trial has been rescheduled.

Status hearing reset for Longview hospital stabbing suspect

A status hearing for the upcoming trial of a man accused of fatally stabbing two people in a Longview surgery center has been reset for April 10.

This is the fourth time Kyron Rayshawn Templeton’s capital murder case has been rescheduled from the weekly status docket. The docket is for attorneys on both sides to inform the presiding judge of their progress toward trial.

Judge Alfonso Charles has issued a gag order in the case.

Templeton, 24, is accused of fatally stabbing a nurse and a visitor in the Good Shepherd Medical Center Ambulatory Surgical Center on Nov. 26, 2013.

The Longview man also faces three aggravated assault charges arising from the same incident, during which three other people were injured.

Templeton could face the death penalty if prosecutors opt to press for capital punishment.

Templeton, whose mother was having surgery in the Medical Plaza that morning, is accused of going on a rampage in the unit.

Nurse Gail Sandidge, 57, and visitor Harris Teel, 82, died of wounds suffered in the attack.

Despite delays, judge wants spring trial in Good Shepherd capital murder case

    By Jimmy Isaac
    CBS19 News

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Almost two years after a fatal stabbing at Good Shepherd Medical Center, a state judge says he anticipates setting a trial date this spring for the suspect.

Kyron Rayshawn Templeton, 24, of Longview, is accused of stabbing four people on Nov. 26, 2013, at the hospital's Ambulatory Surgical Center. Two of the victims died from their injuries.

Templeton faces capital murder and aggravated assault charges. In October, his attorneys, Kevin Settle and Jason Cassel, filed a notice with the 124th District Court that they intend to raise an insanity defense for Templeton.

Tuesday morning, 124th District Judge Alfonso Charles held a hearing for a status update. Settle and Cassel said they wanted to request a scheduling order for trial and pre-trial dates, and also discuss a psychological evaluation of Templeton, including what psychiatrist would conduct the evaluation.

Prosecutors and Templeton's attorneys have yet to agree on a psychiatrist to perform the evaluation. Gregg County Assistant District Attorney Stacey Brownlee says she's also waiting on DNA lab testing results from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

She says District Attorney Carl Dorrough is working on a motion to seek a psychological evaluation of Templeton.

"I also think Mr. Dorrough is speaking with some psychiatrists or psychologists, and I think that that is something we should probably sit down and work out. It's certainly not something we're prepared to do here today yet, but it is in the works,"

Brownlee said. "As far as DPS testing, I did call them. However, they won't give a time frame of any time, or check and make sure that the testing is in the process and the items have been submitted. Other than that, there is no time frame given. I do believe we should be getting close to the front, based on some other cases that we have and how they have come back in the time frame that they've come back in, but there's just no way to predict."

The judge responded that he understands the delays, but that he's ready to get Templeton's case scheduled on his trial docket.

"So, I'm going to ask the state, when it gets its expert, and figures out who it wants to do the evaluation on Mr. Templeton, let the defense know, and then see if y'all can work out the parameters," Charles said, "and if you can't, and let's come back before the court, and then I'm going to ask the parties to work with our court coordinator, and we look at some possible trial dates in the spring."

Both sides agreed with the judge's order.

"That will give us time to do any pre-trial hearings, if they're justified," Settle said.

Templeton has been held in the Gregg County Jail since the day of the stabbing. His bond is set at $2.5 million. Attorneys have been placed on a gag order in the case.

Psychiatric evaluation ordered for Longview hospital stabbing suspect

    By Melissa Greene
    KLTV News

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A Longview man charged with the stabbing deaths of two people in a Longview hospital, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

Kyron Rayshawn Templeton, now 26, has been jailed in Gregg County since the November 2013 stabbing rampage at the Ambulatory Surgery Center at Good Shepherd Medical Hospital in Longview. Nurse Gail Sandidge was killed in the attack, and visitor Harris Teel died from his injuries several days later. Three other people were injured.

The request for the competency hearing was filed earlier this week in the 124th District Court by Kevin H. Settle, Templeton’s defense attorney, and was granted April 18, by Judge Alfonso Charles. The next step in the case is for an evaluation to be performed by a court-designated medical expert.

Templeton is charged with capital murder and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and has been held on $2,500,000 in bonds since shortly after the attack.

Nearly 4 years after Longview hospital stabbing, accused killer to stand trial

    By Stepanie Frazier
    KLTV News

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Nearly four years after two East Texans were murdered, their accused killer will be going to trial.

Kyron Templeton has been in the Gregg County Jail charged with capital murder since November 2013. Wednesday, his trial date was set for October 16.

Templeton is accused of fatally stabbing Nurse Gail Sandidge and 82-year-old Harris Teel at the former Ambulatory Surgical Center in Longview. Three other people suffered stab wounds, but survived.

A competency hearing on Templeton was ordered in March, and he was found competent to stand trial.

    Mental health questions delay trial

    By Meredith Shamburger
    Longview News-Journal

The mental competency of a man accused in the fatal stabbings of two people almost fours years ago at a Longview hospital again has led to a delay in his trial, with Kyron Templeton's attorneys saying they need more time because the case is "extremely complex."

Templeton's trial had been slated to start Monday. District Judge Alfonso Charles granted a continuance in the case, and a docket hearing has been scheduled Dec. 8.

Templeton, 26, was found to be mentally incompetent in August, and his defense attorneys said they need more time to get their client mentally competent so they can discuss the case with him and to ready the large amount of evidence, witnesses and mental health experts for the trial.

"As it stands, trial is set for Oct. 16," attorney Jason Cassel wrote in a motion earlier this month to Charles. "Counsel does not see any conceivable way that trial can begin on that day."

Templeton is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police said he fatally stabbed nurse Gail Sandidge, 57, and visitor Harris Teel, 82, at the Good Shepherd Medical Center Ambulatory Surgical Center just before 7 a.m. Nov. 26, 2013.

He also is accused of attacking nurse Karen Bobo and visitors Teresa Allison and Melissa Simms.

Police said Templeton had been at the hospital for his mother's surgery that morning, and he told an officer that "they" were trying to kill his mother.

He remains in the Gregg County Jail on $2.5 million bond.

Court records show Templeton's attorneys have indicated they intend to present an insanity defense at the trial, but many documents related to the case remain sealed, and the prosecution and defense are under a gag order that prohibits them from discussing the matter in order to minimize pretrial publicity before a jury is seated.

The documents that are public show Templeton's mental health has been in question several times after his arrest, with his attorneys noting at times he has failed to take necessary medication and at one point asked jail officials to stop providing it to him.

It was during an April 7 court hearing that Templeton fired his court-appointed attorneys and told Charles that his new lawyer was "David Beckham" — with lawyers noting he apparently was referencing the famous soccer player as Templeton could not provide further details about a lawyer with that name.

At that time, he was found competent to stand trial after Charles ordered him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

However, Templeton was evaluated again over the summer, and he was ruled in August to be mentally incompetent.

Texas law requires that Templeton must be found mentally competent before the trial can begin, but Cassel noted in his motion that Templeton has yet to be committed to a mental health institution for treatment.

Templeton's lawyers also have said they need more time to ready the case for trial, noting earlier this year that DNA evidence had been held up for years in testing. It was returned in July 2016.

Attorneys also have not been able to discuss the case with Templeton for more than 10 months because he is not mentally fit enough to understand what is going on, records show.

"This case is unusual due to the large number of witnesses and extremely complex due to the volume of mental health testimony that is anticipated," Cassel wrote. "This volume of mental evidence has only increased since the finding of incompetency. Counsel would need additional time to review this information, provide it to their experts and determine if there are any new witnesses that need to be secured."

Suspect in Longview hospital stabbing deaths declared mentally fit to stand trial

    By Meredith Shamburger
    Longview News-Journal

A man charged in the stabbing death of two people at a Longview hospital nearly five years ago underwent psychiatric treatment and has been declared mentally fit to stand trial.

Kyron Rayshawn Templeton, 27, of Longview returned Monday to Gregg County Jail from North Texas State Hospital-Vernon Campus. He is being held on $2.5 million in bonds for a warrant from the County Court at Law for capital murder and a warrant from the 124th District Court for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Templeton is on the docket for 1:30 p.m. Friday before 124th District Court Judge Alfonso Charles to determine if and when a trial will be set over charges in the 2013 murders of nurse Gail Sandidge, 57, and visitor Harris Teel, 82, at the Ambulatory Surgical Center at then-Good Shepherd Medical Center-Longview.

Templeton’s return to Gregg County followed a nine-page evaluation by a psychologist at North Texas State Hospital, where he was admitted July 23 and was interviewed Oct. 17.

“During the course of the interview, Mr. Templeton demonstrated socially appropriate behavior by being cooperative and polite even when confronted with challenging information,” Michele L. Borynski, competency program chief psychologist, wrote. “He was sufficiently articulate in his speech, and he coherently provided organized and relevant explanations regarding his charge and potential defense strategies.”

Borynski wrote Templeton “possesses a factual and rational understanding of the pending charge. He displayed the ability to consider and articulate what he is accused of as described in the police reports and supporting documentation and plausible legal strategies based on said information.”

She added, “Therefore, I would offer for adjudication the opinion that Mr. Kyron Templeton is presently competent to stand trial.”

Templeton was found mentally incompetent in August 2017, and his defense attorneys said they needed more time to get him mentally competent so they could discuss the case with him. They indicated they wanted to discuss the large amount of evidence, witnesses and mental health experts for the trial.

He faced the charges after police said he fatally stabbed Sandidge and Teel just before 7 a.m. Nov. 26, 2013. He also was accused of attacking nurse Karen Bobo and visitors Teresa Allison and Melissa Sims.

Police said Templeton had visited the hospital for his mother’s surgery that morning and told an officer “they” were trying to kill his mother.

As of December, Templeton had twice been ruled incompetent to stand trial.

Justice delayed: 5 years after Longview hospital stabbings, trial in sight

    By Glenn Evans
    Longview News-Journal

From Karen Bobo’s perspective, “the justice system has not been kind” in the five years since two people were stabbed to death and she and two more were injured at a Longview hospital facility.

A March trial date has been set for the capital murder trial of Kyron Rayshawn Templeton, 27, who is accused in the Nov. 26, 2013, attack in the Ambulatory Surgical Center at then-Good Shepherd Medical Center.

The deaths of nurse Gail Sandidge, 57, and 82-year-old visitor Harris Teel rocked the Good Shepherd family and stunned the city. The case was so prominent that 124th District Judge Alfonso Charles issued a gag order when Templeton was arraigned on murder and assault charges a day after the killings.

Bobo, a nurse, and visitors Melissa Simms and Teresa Allen also were wounded in the morning stabbings that brought police to the fourth-floor surgical center in Medical Plaza I before 7 a.m. Bobo and Allison were treated and released from the emergency room, while Simms was admitted for a short stay.

Bobo, in response to a Facebook request for comment, observed the gag order but provided her feelings about the case — and for the five-year wait for justice.

“At this time, of course you know, there is a trial pending in March 2019,” Bobo wrote. “With that in mind, I cannot discuss details of that day. I will say the events of that day forever changed numerous lives. The justice system has not been kind to the Sandidge and Teel families or to any of the rest of us for having to wait over five years to see some kind of justice for their family members who were brutally attacked and murdered that day.”

Templeton, of Longview, has been jailed since his arraignment on $2.5 million bond attached to both capital murder and all three aggravated assault charges. He faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.

Investigators have said Templeton was at the facility for his mother’s surgery that morning. The police officer who arrested Templeton wrote in an arrest report that the suspect told him that “they” were trying to kill his mother.

“Prayers and thoughts during the upcoming months and through the trial will be greatly appreciated,” Bobo wrote. “Events like this never leave you the same. You just try to adjust to the new normal. I have many other thoughts which cannot be discussed at this time. ... I still talk to people who can’t believe after five years he hasn’t been tried. I myself would like to know why. Perhaps you could ask the sitting DA that question.”

Meanwhile, Templeton has filed a subpoena for an odd piece of evidence relating to incoming Gregg County District Attorney Tom Watson. The defendant asked transcripts of “ ...any calls or messages, also known as ‘robo calls,’ call logs and lists of numbers called, any statistical information of said calls, made in regards (sic) to the campaign of Gregg County District Attorney Tom Watson for the March 6, 2018, primary.”

The target of the subpoena is Ferrell Marketing & Public Relations in Tyler. That presumably is a firm Watson used in his bid for office, but Watson also was not able to give a theory on the subpoena without violating a gag order.

The gag order prevented District Attorney Carl Dorrough from commenting on the case. But he said he has appointed April Sikes to lead the prosecution next year.

A 15-year prosecutor in Smith County, Sikes was named this month by Watson to replace Chief Prosecutor Stacey Brownlee, who had the case but went into private practice in May after Watson beat Dorrough in March’s GOP primary.

The court docket for the case, which is the judge’s record of all events since Templeton’s arraignment, does not clearly indicate all causes for delay in getting to trial, listing seven criminal docket status dates from March 2014 to August 2015.

The monthly status docket is when judges confer with lawyers on both sides in an effort to set a trial date.

The record then jumps to June 2016, when the state was granted a psychological evaluation of the defendant’s competency to stand trial.

That report was given to the court Jan. 3, 2017, but three months later, Templeton told Charles that he was firing his court-appointed attorneys, Kevin Settle and Jason Cassel.

Templeton told Charles he was hiring someone named David Beckham, though no one in court knew an attorney with the famous soccer star’s name, and Templeton did not know where he practices law.

Charles told Templeton he was free to hire counsel but that Settle and Cassel would remain his defenders until he did. The judge also set potential trial dates in September and October 2017.

A competency hearing was conducted before those hearings occurred, and on Aug. 8, 2017, Charles accepted an agreement by both sides that Templeton was incompetent.

That finding prevented a trial. It also included an order that Templeton be placed under the care of a psychiatrist who would prescribe psychotropic medicines to “begin the competency restoration process in the jail,” the docket says.

In October 2017, Charles granted Templeton a trial delay, writing in the docket that he had no choice because Templeton had not undergone a “competency restoration program” to go along with the drugs he was prescribed.

Two months later, Charles noted Templeton was “still awaiting transfer to Vernon State Hospital” and reset Templeton’s next status docket appearance for this month.

He was declared mentally fit for trial Nov. 9. Charles set a March 18 trial date two days after the competency declaration. He is set for another status docket appearance on Jan. 11, 2019.

Man gets life, 40 more years in 2013 fatal stabbing spree at Longview hospital

    By Glenn Evans
    Longview News-Journal

UPDATE: A man who killed two people in 2013 at a Longview hospital has been sentenced to life and an additional 40 years in prison in the stabbing spree that led to the deaths and injured three others.

Kyron Rayshawn Templeton, 28, pleaded guilty in front of 124th District Judge Alfonso Charles and will serve twin life terms for the Nov. 26, 2013, fatal stabbings of nurse Gail Sandidge and Harris K. Teel, the latter attacked while he dozed in the waiting area of the then-Good Shepherd Ambulatory Surgical Center where his son had a procedure.

Those life terms will run together.

He also pleaded guilty and was handed two 20-year sentences for assaults on nurse Karen Bobo and visitor Teresa Allison.

Those are concurrent but won’t start until the life terms are complete. Life is considered 60 years in the Texas penal system.

Finally, a separate 20-year term also awaits if the life-plus-20 ever concludes, that sentence for the third aggravated assault, on visitor Melissa Sims.

The deaths rocked the Good Shepherd family and stunned the city. The case was so prominent that the judge issued a gag order when Templeton was arraigned on murder and assault charges a day after the killings.

Templeton, of Longview, has been jailed since his arraignment on $2.5 million bond attached to both capital murder and all three aggravated assault charges.

Investigators have said Templeton was at the facility for his mother’s surgery that morning. The police officer who arrested Templeton wrote in an arrest report that the suspect told him that “they” were trying to kill his mother.

In June 2016, the state was granted a psychological evaluation of the defendant’s competency to stand trial.

“There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”
