    Facts of the Crime:

    Sentenced to death in Kern County on March 3, 1982 in the January 23, 1981 murder of Janice Allen. Janice D. Allen, 29, was engaged to be married to Dale Boender. She was cooking steaks when Ronald Lee Sanders barged into the couple's home at gunpoint, tied them up and beat them both. Allen died of her injuries while Boender survived the attack.

    On January 11, 2006, the United States Supreme Court reversed and remanded a decision by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit overturning Sanders' sentence.

    A federal appeal regarding an ineffective-assistance-of-counsel claim was argued in 2008 in Federal District Court in Fresno. A decision is currently being awaited.

    Condemned Incarcerated Person Ronald L. Sanders Dies of Natural Causes

    VACAVILLE — Ronald L. Sanders, housed at California Medical Facility (CMF) on condemned status, died of natural causes Sept. 12, 2023. He was 71. Sanders was pronounced deceased at 10:02 a.m. in a CMF housing unit.

    Sanders was sentenced to death in Kern County on March 3, 1982 for the murder of Janice Dishroon Allen, 29. He was admitted to San Quentin’s death row on June 13, 1984.

    There are currently 653 condemned persons in CDCR. More information about capital punishment in California can be found here: https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/capital-punishment/. The state has not carried out an execution in 17 years. The last execution was that of Clarence Ray Allen held on Jan. 17, 2006. On March 13, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Executive Order N-09-19, instituting a moratorium on the death penalty in California.


    CMF was established in 1955 by the California Legislature to provide a centrally located facility to meet the medical, psychiatric, and dental health care needs of male felons incarcerated within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). CMF is a medium security medical facility located in the city of Vacaville in Solano County.
