SALT LAKE CITY—Two Utah police officers who gave their lives in the line duty in the past year were honored Thursday morning at the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial.

Sgt. Cory Wride became the 137th officer to have his name placed on the wall of the memorial. Draper Police Sgt. Derek Johnson was also honored.

Wride was killed on Jan. 30 after pulling over to perform a routine motorist assist. Wride’s death was the first in a string of shootings and a crime spree than spanned more than 50 miles and across two counties.

Police believe Jose Angel Garcia-Juaregui is the one who shot and killed Wride and wounded Deputy Greg Sherwood. Garcia-Juaregui died from injuries sustained during a shootout with Juab County

Johnson was also killed after stopping for a vehicle pulled over on the side of the road on September 1.

Family and friends from both the Johnson and Wride families spoke at the event offering memories of their loved ones and thanks for the support of the community.

The families of Johnson and Wride were each presented with a purple heart award and several quilts from the Utah Quilt Guild.

“I am deeply touched and moved and honored,” Nannette Wride said. “Cory won’t be forgotten. What a wonderful way for the community and us to remember those officers and the heroes they are.”
