Charles Michael Hall - Federal Death Row

    Charles Michael Hall

Two federal medical prison inmates convicted of murder

Two inmates of the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners have been convicted in federal court of murdering another inmate at the facility, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Wesley Paul Coonce, Jr., 34, and Charles Michael Hall, 43, were found guilty Wednesday of one count of first-degree murder, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. Coonce was also found guilty of one count of murder by an inmate serving a life sentence.

Another inmate at the prison medical center, Victor Castro-Rodriguez, 51, was found dead on the floor of his cell on Jan. 26, 2010.

Castro-Rodriguez originally was convicted on an assault and resisting arrest in the U.S. District Court of Southern Florida and was being held at the Springfield prison because of a mental illness.

The jury deliberated for about an hour before returning the guilty verdicts to U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner. The trial began April 28.

The trial now enters the penalty phase in which the jury must determine the sentences for Coonce and Hall. Under federal statutes, Coonce and Hall are subject to either the death penalty or life in federal prison without parole.

This case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney James D. Peterson of the Capital Case Section of the U.S. Department of Justice's Criminal Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall D. Eggert. It was investigated by the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons.

Protest planned for federal death sentence case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - With sentencing scheduled Friday for two federal inmates convicted of murder, opponents of capital punishment will hold a death penalty protest outside the Federal Courthouse in Springfield.

Federal prosecutors will ask a jury to sentence Wesley Paul Coonce Jr. and Charles Michael Hall to death. The jury convicted both men two weeks ago of first degree murder in the killing of inmate Victor Castro-Rodriguez while all three were incarcerated at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield four years ago.

Protest organizers say they don’t understand why are federal officials trying to get a jury to approve official killing, or why the government wants to kill people to show that killing people is wrong.

Inmates sentenced to death for murder in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Two inmates at a federal facility in Springfield have been sentenced to death for killing another inmate.

Wesley Paul Coonce Jr. and Charles Michael Hall, inmates at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, were convicted in May of first-degree murder in the 2010 death of 51-year-old Victor Castro-Rodriguez in his cell.

Coonce was also convicted of murder by an inmate serving a life sentence.

The Justice Department says in a release that Coonce and Hall were sentenced to death Monday.

Coonce is serving a life sentence out of Texas for a 2002 kidnapping conviction. Hall's serving 16 years for a 2000 conviction in Maine for threatening federal officials. Court documents show he told investigators he wanted to be sentenced to death for killing Castro-Rodriguez.

I can't believe they're protesting this in Springfield! Approval of the DP must be 75% to 80% there!

Those 2 scumbags got exactly what they deserve! Send them to Terre Haute!
