KILLEEN - Nearly one week after being shot in the line of duty, 37-year-old Killeen SWAT Officer Odis Denton was escorted home by numerous emergency vehicles after spending days at the hospital.

Denton was shot alongside Police Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie, 47, last Friday as they and other SWAT officers served a narcotics search warrant at a Killeen apartment complex.

Dinwiddie died Sunday in the intensive care unit at Scott & White hospital.

One of the residents of the apartment, Marvin Louis Guy, 49, was arrested after the shooting and remains in the Bell County Jail charged with three counts of capital murder.

SWAT Officer Juan Obregon was at the apartment complex when the shooting took place. For him, it was a scene that was all too familiar.

“We heard ‘officer down’ then we heard the names and knowing these two guys really well just hit me like a truck right away," Obregon said.

In July of last year, Obregon was shot alongside SWAT Officer Bobby Hornsby, 32, when a Fort Hood soldier opened fire at police during a standoff at the Grandon Manor Apartments in Killeen.

A bullet shattered the femur in Obregon’s left leg. After surgery, he was unable to walk for weeks and underwent grueling therapy.

"The doctors told me that I wouldn't be able to do my job let alone be on the SWAT team anymore."

    "I felt hopeless," Obregon said.

But Obregon overcame his immeasurable odds and returned to Killeen SWAT in early January.

However, the connections between Obregon and Denton’s injuries remain eerie.

Both were shot in the left leg, just millimeters shy of piercing the femoral artery, and both suffered shattered femurs. Even the same doctors operated on both Obregon and Denton.

"It's like the tape was rewound and different people were placed in the situation,” Obregon said.

“Him being hit in the leg, Chuck and Bobby being killed, it’s like a bad dream and we’re waiting to wake up."

Obregon made a point to visit Denton as soon as he could in the hospital.

“I wanted to see him, you know people always tell you stuff like ‘I know what you’re going through,’ when they really don’t. In this situation I had been in his shoes,” Obregon said.

“I knew what he was about to go through and I wanted to be there to lift him up.”

Obregon vows to uphold that promise; he wheeled Denton from the ambulance Wednesday to the front door of his home.

It was a small gesture showing Denton that he won’t pave his road to recovery alone.

"Being able to be there for him and push him up the driveway through those front doors, gave him the opportunity to see that his boys are here for him and that's what's going to get him through everything."

Officers pay their final respects to Detective Charles "Chuck" Dinwiddie May 17, 2014 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

Dinwiddie wanted to make world a better place

    The Killeen Daily Herald

In his sister’s eyes, Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie died the way he lived, striving to make the world a better place.

Ellen Dinwiddie Smith stood behind a lectern and looked into a crowd of more than a thousand people who congregated in the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on Saturday to honor her youngest brother, Killeen Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie, who died last week in the line of duty.

Smith began her eulogy reading a Bible verse — John 15:13.

“Greater love hath no man than this, than a man lay down his life for his friends,” she read as Dinwiddie’s wife, Holly, and two children, Chloe and Colin, sat in the audience along with his parents and siblings.

“Chuck first and foremost lived his life in service to others,” Smith said. “It was about serving others. ... He showed time and time again that he cared deeply about the person. He recognized and respected the inherent value in each and every person with whom he came in contact.”

Dinwiddie, 47, was an 18-year veteran of the Killeen Police Department. He was fatally wounded while he and other members of the KPD SWAT team served a narcotics search warrant May 9. He died of his wounds May 11.

“The world is a better place because of my brother,” Smith said.

Killeen: Man Charged In Shooting That Left Officer Dead Indicted

KILLEEN - Marvin Louis Guy, 49, of Killeen, was named in a three-count indictment Wednesday charging attempted capital murder in a shooting in which four police officers were struck, one of whom later died.

Police Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie, 47, and Officer Odis Denton, 37, were shot as they and other officers served the narcotics search warrant just after 5:30 a.m. May 9 at 1104 Circle M Dr. Apt. 3 in Killeen.

Dinwiddie died at 1:30 p.m. May 11 in the intensive care unit of Scott & White Hospital.

Denton, who was shot in the femur, underwent surgery and was later released from Scott & White.

Two other officers were hit by gunfire, but were spared injury by their protective gear.

A capital murder charge in Dinwiddie’s death is pending completion of forensic tests and completion of a police investigation, Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza said Wednesday.

Guy remains in the Bell County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $3 million charged with three counts of attempted capital murder.

Killeen Man Charged In Veteran SWAT Officer’s Shooting Death

KILLEEN - Marvin Louis Guy, 49, who was charged earlier with three counts of attempted capital murder in a shooting in which four Killeen police officers were struck, one of whom later died, was also facing a capital murder charge Wednesday night after the Bell County Jury handed up a second indictment in the case.

Guy pleaded not guilty on June 5 to the attempted capital murder charges.

Prosecutors said they delayed seeking the capital murder indictment until forensic tests were completed.

He remained in the Bell County Jail Wednesday night in lieu of bonds totaling $3 million.

Dinwiddie, whose father was an Army officer, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but his family later settled in Harker Heights, where he attended Harker Heights Elementary School, Manor Junior High School, and then graduated from Killeen High School in 1984.

He earned an associate degree in Electronics and Computer Technology from Central Texas College and joined the Killeen Police Department in 1996.

He was married to Holly Dinwiddie for 22 years and they had two children, 10-year-old Colin and 9-year-old Chloe.

He was an 18-year veteran of the Killeen Police Department and a 15-year veteran of the department’s SWAT Team.

    By Chris McGuinness
    The Killeen Daily Herald

BELTON — A Killeen man accused of killing a Killeen police detective in May pleaded not guilty to a charge of capital murder in Bell County district court this morning.

Marvin Louis Guy, 49, entered his plea after Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza read the charges against Guy in the courtroom of 27th District Court Judge John Gauntt this morning.

Guy is accused of killing detective Charles "Chuck" Dinwiddie during a shootout at a Killeen apartment May 9. Dinwiddie and other KPD SWAT officers were attempting to serve a narcotics search warrant when the shooting began.

A total of four officers were hit. Two were protected by their body armor. Another, officer Odis Denton, was hit in the leg. Dinwidde was hit in the face, and died in the hospital two days later.

Police officers killed but they were nowhere to be found

    By Jerry Schaefer
    The Las Vegas Tribune

Does anyone remember Detective Melvin Santiago? He was a Jersey City police officer who was shot to death just a month ago, on July 13th. Santiago was white. His killer, Lawrence Campbell, was black. Does anyone recall Obama appearing before national television and calling for justice for Officer Santiago’s family? Does anyone recall Eric Holder rushing to Jersey City to see that justice was done?

How about Officer Jeffrey Westerfield? He was a Gary, Indiana police officer who was shot to death on July 6th. Westerfield was white. His killer, Carl LeEllis Blount, Jr., was black. Where was Obama? Where was Holder?

Or Officer Perry Renn? He was an Indianapolis, Indiana police officer who was also shot to death in the month of July, the day before Officer Westerfield was killed. Officer Renn was white. His killer, Major Davis, was black. I don’t recall any mention by Obama about the untimely death of Officer Renn. And, I doubt that Eric Holder rushed to Indianapolis to make sure justice was done. Or, maybe I just missed it.

Vermillion Parish Deputy Sheriff Allen Bares was gunned down by two men last June 23rd in Louisiana. Deputy Bares was white. His two killers, Quintlan Richard and Baylon Taylor, were black. Was Obama outraged? Did Eric Holder rush to Louisiana to make sure that the family of Deputy Bares found justice?

Detective Charles Dinwiddie of the Killeen (Texas) Police Department was murdered by Marvin Lewis Guy, a black male. Officer Dinwiddie was white. This happened on May 11th, about three months ago. I don’t even recall seeing anything about that on the news. Certainly, the white citizens in Killeen didn’t take to the streets to loot and burn businesses. Again, I don’t recall any mention by Obama or Holder.

Then, there is Officer Kevin Jordan of the Griffin, Georgia Police Department. He was gunned down a few months ago on May 31st. Officer Jordan was black. His killer, Michael Bowman, was white. This was a white man murdering a black police officer. Where was Jesse Jackson?

Where was “The Reverend” Al Sharpton? Was there looting and burning on the streets of Griffin, Georgia? No. In fact, I don’t recall hearing about this one in the news, as well. Why? You can draw your own conclusions.

Over the past few months, there have been five reported deaths of police officers by gunshot in the US. Of those, four were white officers who were murdered by black men. Blacks complain that white officers treat black men more aggressively on the street. You can draw your own conclusions on that one, as well.

DA to seek death penalty in Killeen police slaying case

    By Chris McGuinness
    The Killeen Daily Herald

BELTON — Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza announced that he will seek the death penalty against the man accused of killing a Killeen police officer during a shootout in May.

Garza made the announcement in open court, telling 27th District Judge John Gauntt that his office would seek the most severe punishment for Marvin Louis Guy, 49, of Killeen.

Guy is accused of firing on Killeen SWAT officers who were attempting to serve a "no knock" narcotics warrant at his Killeen apartment May 9. According to police reports, Guy fired from inside the home, hitting four officers. One of those officers, Det. Charles "Chuck" Dinwiddie, was hit in the face. He died two days later.

Guy was charged with capital murder in connection with Dinwiddie's death. He was also charged with three counts of attempted capital murder because he fired on the other officers during the shootout, wounding one. Body armor protected the other officers who were hit.

Garza's announcement comes one day after Texas Gov. Rick Perry presented Dinwiddie's family with the Star of Texas award. The award is given each year to police and other first responders killed or injured in the line of duty.

Judge Gauntt also denied a request by one of Guy's defense team to withdrawal from the case.

Attorneys ask judge to delay trial of accused cop killer

Lawyers file motion to move trial start date from June 1 to February at the earliest

BELTON — The man accused of shooting and killing a Killeen police officer last year may not see the inside of a court room until early 2016.

Lawyers for Marvin Louis Guy filed a motion Tuesday asking Bell County 27th District Court Judge John Gauntt to delay Guy’s capital murder trial from June 1 until February at the earliest.

Guy, 49, is accused of fatally shooting Killeen Police Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie on May 9. According to police, Guy opened fire on Dinwiddie and other members of the department’s SWAT team who were attempting to serve a “no-knock” narcotics warrant at Guy’s Killeen apartment. Dinwiddie was hit in the face and died May 11.

Guy was charged with capital murder in connection with Dinwiddie’s death and three counts of attempted capital murder for allegedly firing on three other officers during the shootout.

In September, Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza announced he would seek the death penalty in the case.

According to the motion filed Tuesday, Guy’s court-appointed defense team said it needed more time to work on his case, and would not be able to provide a competent defense for Guy should the trial begin June 1.

“It is unusual for a case where the state is seeking the death penalty to go to trial in less than a year,” said Michelle Tuegel, one of Guy’s defense lawyers.

Guy’s attorneys hope to use some of the time to explore the possibility Guy may have an intellectual disability. The court document stated Guy’s defense team is reviewing school records from Guy’s hometown of Gary, Ind., which indicated he was in special education classes.

In addition, Guy’s attorneys asked for additional time to review the massive collection of evidence provided to them by the prosecution. It includes thousands of pages of documents, more than 2,000 images, and hundreds of hours of video footage and witness interviews.

“We have been working our way through the discovery for months and we have still not completed the review of all this information,” the motion read.

While Guy’s defense team seeks more time to build his defense, letters from Guy himself appear to indicate he is not satisfied with his representation.

Guy has written at least eight letters from Bell County Jail to the court. In an August letter, he asked that two of his attorneys, Michael White and Russell Hunt Sr., be dismissed from the case.

Guy claimed Hunt, a veteran death penalty defense attorney, made “vindictive” and “unprofessional” comments to him.

“(Hunt) stated when I asked to diversify a jury, ‘Oh so I guess you want a black judge and a black jury, too’,” Guy wrote.

Gauntt denied Guy’s request to drop his defense team in September.

Hunt was unavailable for comment Tuesday, and Tuegel said she was unable to comment directly on Guy’s claims because of attorney-client privilege.

“In any case where our client is African-American, we are very sensitive to those issues,” she said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Gauntt had not ruled on the defense motion to delay Guy’s trial.

Judge Orders Gag Order In Trial Of Local Officer's Accused Killer

KILLEEN - A Bell County district judge on Thursday issued a gag order that prevents discussion of details in the capital murder trial of a Killeen man who is accused of killing a Killeen police officer during a drug raid.

Judge John Gauntt, in 27th District Court, on Thursday issued the order which prevents both prosecutors and defense lawyers, as well as any other court officers, from talking about the case and granted a request from Marvin Guy to replace his appointed counsel.

Guy is indicted for capital murder in connection with the death of Killeen police Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie and with attempted capital murder in the wounding of other officers, all of whom were attempting to serve a drug search warrant on Guy’s Killeen home.

Gauntt removed Waco lawyers Russell Hunt, Sr., and his law partner Michelle Tuegle and appointed Austin attorney Carlos Garcia to the case, court records show.

Guy, 50, is accused of shooting Dinwiddie in the face and wounding other officers who were protected by their bullet-proof vests.

Gauntt already has delayed the trial once after a continuance motion from defense attorneys.

"We are not ready, and we cannot be ready this year," Hunt said at the time of the continuance hearing.

Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza did not oppose the motion for a delay, which the judge granted, rescheduling the trial for March 28, 2016.

"I apologize for the delay, but it is what it is, Gauntt said.

"We have to do justice for everyone."

Guy is accused of opening fire on Killeen officers who were serving a so-called no-knock search warrant just after 5:30 a.m. May 9, 2014 at 1104 Circle M Dr. Apt. 3 in Killeen.

Dinwiddie, 47, and Officer Odis Denton, 38, a nine-year veteran of the Killeen Police Department, were shot and Dinwiddie died two days later at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Two other officers were hit by gunfire, but were spared injury by their protective gear.

Dinwiddie was an 18-year veteran of the Killeen Police Department and a member of the department's SWAT Team for 15 years.

Guy remains jailed in lieu of bonds totaling $4.5 million.
