Two men and a 17-year-old boy were charged Wednesday with murder and other counts for allegedly killing a Downey man during a weekend home-invasion robbery.

Paul Darvis Misikei, 18, Henry Willie Sao, 27, and Sakaopo Atanasio Folau, who is 17 and charged as an adult, are scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 10 on one count each of murder, home-invasion robbery and first-degree burglary with a person present.

The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation that the victim, 59-year-old Jim Rudometkin, was killed during the crime of robbery and residential burglary.

Prosecutors are expected to decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Misikei and Sao. Folau cannot face the death penalty because of his age, and faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged.

An autopsy determined that Rudometkin died from blunt trauma — he had been struck multiple times on the head and been “bound by ligature” — with heart disease also a factor, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Authorities allege Misikei and Folau forced their way into the home, with Sao entering shortly afterward.

A neighbor called police, who arrived at the home in the 10300 block of Lesterford Avenue about 11:15 a.m. Sunday and were told that men were seen running from the area, according to Downey police Sgt. Terry Goeckner.

A witness had seen two suspects contact the homeowner near the side door and force him back inside, then observed a third person enter the home.

The officers gave chase after arriving and apprehended Sao, a Long Beach resident, and Misikei, an Anaheim resident, but the teenage suspect got away and wasn’t apprehended until Tuesday.

“Further information gathered during this investigation points to the victim being specifically targeted by the suspects,” Downey police Lt. Alex Irizabal said. “We do not believe this was a random crime.”

Neighbors said Rudometkin was a well-liked local Realtor who had lived alone since his father’s death.

Fourth man charged in fatal Downey home invasion robbery

A fourth man was charged Tuesday in connection with a fatal home-invasion robbery in Downey earlier this month.

Michael Anthony Harrod, 24, of Anaheim, faces three felony counts: murder, home invasion robbery and first-degree burglary, person present, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Harrod was arrested Jan. 29 in Anaheim, said Sgt. Kevin McCaster.

He pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Tuesday at Los Angeles County Superior Court in Downey and was remanded into custody on $1 million bail. His next court date is Feb. 10 in Norwalk.

The other defendants, Paul Darvis Misikei, 19, Henry Willie Sao, 28, and Sakaopo Atanasio Folau, 17, were charged Jan. 20 with capital murder, home invasion robbery and first-degree burglary with a person present.

Harrod allegedly planned the Jan. 17 robbery with the three other defendants, according to the district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors say he drove Misikei, Sao and Folau to the 10300 block of Lesterford Avenue where 59-year-old real estate agent Jim Rudometkin lived. Harrod stayed in the vehicle while Misikei and Folau forced their way into Rudometkin’s home. Sao reportedly entered the home shortly after, according to the district attorney’s office.

A neighbor witnessed the attack as it was happening and called police.

When officers arrived, the defendants attempted to flee the scene, but Misikei and Sao were soon located and arrested, according to the district attorney’s office. Folau was apprehended two days later.

Officers found Rudometkin bound and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Downey police believe the suspects targeted Rudometkin. He spent 28 years working for Coldwell Banker Alliance Realty in Whittier. He never married and lived his parents’ home after they died within the past few years.

If convicted, Misikei and Sao could face the death penalty if prosecutors decide to seek it. Folau, because of his age, faces up to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

Harrod faces up to 25 years to life in state prison if convicted.

2 men get prison for death of Downey man during robbery

    PUBLISHED: January 16, 2020 at 11:51 a.m. | UPDATED: January 16, 2020 at 3:35 p.m.

Two young men were sentenced Thursday to 15 years to life in prison for the death of a Downey man who was struck on the head and suffered a fatal heart attack during a home-invasion robbery.

Paul Darvis Misikei, 22, of Anaheim and Sakaopo Atanasio Folau, 21, pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder for the Jan. 17, 2016, death of Jim Rudometkin.

Two other men — Henry Willie Sao, 31, of Long Beach and Michael Harrod, 28 — pleaded no contest to first-degree home-invasion robbery for their roles in the crime and were previously sentenced to six years in prison.

The county coroner’s office concluded that the 59-year-old victim died of a heart attack brought on by a stressful event, blunt-force trauma and cardiovascular disease.

Police were sent to the victim’s home in the 10300 block of Lesterford Avenue about 11:15 a.m. that day following a call from a neighbor, and were told that men were seen running from the area.

The officers gave chase and apprehended Misikei and Sao; Folau and Harrod were arrested later.

The investigation “points to the victim being specifically targeted by the suspects,” Downey police Lt. Alex Irizabal said shortly after the crime. “We do not believe this was a random crime.”

Neighbors said Rudometkin was a well-liked real estate agent who lived alone.
