Capital murder charges filed in Birmingham slaying

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - A Birmingham man is in custody in the slaying of a man killed Sunday night while sitting in his SUV in his grandfather's yard.

Police on Friday announced the arrest of 23-year-old Tyree Law. Law is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of attempted murder. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

Law is charged with the March 9 shooting death of 24-year-old Darius Moore. The slaying happened about 9:45 p.m. in the 6100 block of Blocton Avenue off of the Bessemer Super Highway in the Roosevelt City community.

Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards said someone walked up to Moore's SUV and shot him. A family member heard the shot and went outside. Law, he said, then fired a shot toward the house and fled the scene on foot. Moore was taken to UAB Hospital, and pronounced dead there.

Edwards said Friday that detectives believe Law and Moore were acquaintances. The shooting, he said, stemmed from illegal drug activity between both men.

Law is charged with two counts of capital murder because police say he shot into a vehicle, and because he robbed Moore after the shooting. The attempted murder charge comes from firing at the person who came out of the house after Moore was shot, Edwards said.

Moore was the city's fifth homicide this year. His funeral is set for Saturday.
