Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said one week ago, Janaya was brought to Whitney Drive where she was sexually assaulted and strangled. Her body was found the next morning inside an abandoned trailer. Papania said Garcia lived at The Palms apartments where Janaya was last seen. He called the little girl's tragic death "a crime of opportunity."

The chief said Julian Gray, who was also arrested last week, remains a person of interest. Papania said evidence collected at the scene of the crime must still be analyzed, and could result in more charges.

Chief Papania said just before announcing the new charges to the public, he met with Janaya's parents to update them on the work of his investigators.

"Justice for Janaya remains of utmost importance," Chief Papania said.

Caring South Mississippians pay for Janaya Thompson's funeral

    By Patrick Ochs
    The Sun-Herald

GULFPORT -- In wake of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson's tragic death, the community has continued to give, both emotionally and financially.

When Janaya is laid to rest Tuesday, the cost of her service will have been taken care of by a handful of people and businesses.

The Mississippi Crime Victim Compensation Program, Lockett-Williams Mortuary Inc., M&M Creations, the city of Gulfport, Luxury Limousine and Deen's Florist are all listed on Janaya's obituary as having provided services for the funeral. Lockett-Williams Mortuary funeral director Sonya Williams-Barnes said the child's family won't have any out-of-pocket costs, thanks to the outpouring of support.

"The community feels for this family and feels for the incident that has happened," Williams-Barnes said. "They're just pouring out their heart the only way they know how."

Williams-Barnes said it wasn't a surprise Coastians flocked to help Janaya's family.

"There have been other calls; we just can't use them all," she said. "It has been good to see that we do still have a society that has heart and compassion. Not that I ever doubted it, because any time we have had traumatic times on the Gulf Coast, people step in and do what their hearts lead them to do."

Visitation is set for 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the funeral to follow. Janaya will be laid to rest at Pine Ridge Gardens Cemetery.

Chief: Alberto Garcia is a criminal

    By Michelle Lady
    WLOX News

GULFPORT, MS - Alberto Garcia appeared emotionless as he was escorted by sheriff's deputies to the front of the jail courtroom Friday morning in shackles and a jumpsuit. The lack of emotion was no surprise to Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania.

    "He's a criminal," Papania said.

Garcia is charged with sexually assaulting and killing 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. Court documents obtained by WLOX News state Garcia implicated himself in both crimes and admitted he tried to destroy evidence.

The documents also say that during an interview with police, Garcia gave details about the crimes that only the perpetrator and detectives would know.

Garcia went on to tell police his DNA and fingerprints would be found at the trailer where Janaya was found dead. He said he burglarized the trailer on July 12, and stole two jackets, a pornographic magazine, a movie disk and blackout curtains. Garcia is also facing separate charges for burglary.

Papania and one of his investigators sat in the front row of the courtroom on Friday to hear what the judge and Garcia had to say.

"It's an important case," Papania said. "I have talked to that family, and it's a special family and that was a special little girl. I told them that we would seek justice for her, and I'm going to follow this case all the way through."

Papania said charging Garcia is just the first step in seeking justice for young Janaya, a child the whole community is mourning.

Candles, stuffed animals, cards and balloons surround the apartment where Janaya once called home and outside the trailer where her lifeless body was discovered.

"We are still continuing to move forward in this investigation," Papania said. "Obviously, Julian Gray remains a person of interest. There is a lot of evidence being processed now and still being collected so we continue to move forward."

Gray remains behind bars on unrelated charges of sexual battery and rape. According to court papers, the incidents happened in March and April, and both charges were filed by the same victim.

Rallying continues in Gulfport for Janaya Thompson

    By Asha Staples
    WLOX News

GULFPORT, MS - The call for justice in the murder case of 5-year-old Janaya Thompson remains strong in the city of Gulfport. On Saturday, another rally was held in honor of the young child.

"The person that murdered this child, to be honest with you, we want to see him to death. We want to see him put to death. You can't have people like this walking around, because they're lower than animals to do a child like this," said Weldon Lee, from Operations Help Civil Rights Group.

'No justice, no peace,' is the message hundreds of people have been screaming out for days now in honor of little Janaya Thompson.

Police continue to gather evidence against suspected murderer Alberto Garcia. They are also looking deeper into a person of interest, Julian Gray, who's currently behind bars charged with an unrelated rape. Supporters at the rally said until the case is closed, their voices will be heard.

"Justice has to prevail so they can be at peace, you know, that's all. I came down to pay my respects," supporter Eddie Osborne said.

Leaders of the Operations Help Civil Rights Group say the mission of their rallies will be to show that it's not about the color of skin, but the power of justice for all. They want the person who took the life of a little angel at such a young age to be properly punished.

"We've lost a 5-year-old little girl that didn't get to live her life. It's not about her color. We're not about color. It's about people, because we all have civil rights. We all bleed red," Vickie Wilkerson said.

The Operation Help Civil Rights Group will hold another rally on August 9, at 6 p.m.

Suspect in Ja'Naya Thompson's capital murder set for hearing in Gulfport

    By Robin Fitzgerald
    The Sun-Herald

GULFPORT -- Police will present evidence this morning in the capital murder case against Alberto Julio Garcia, accused of kidnapping and killing 5-year-old Ja'Naya Thompson in July.

Garcia, 29, is being held without bond at the Harrison County jail. He will be taken to Harrison County Court for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Robin Alfred Midcalf.

An autopsy showed Ja'Naya died of asphyxiation by strangulation and had been sexually assaulted.

Garcia has given police information about the case that only law enforcement and someone involved in the crimes would know, a court document said.

Prosecutors: DNA evidence links Garcia to girl's murder

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gruesome and disturbing new details were revealed Friday morning in a pre-trial hearing for the man accused of killing 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. The Gulfport girl was sexually assaulted and strangled in July.

Alberto Julio Garcia is charged with capital murder in the case. During Friday's hearing, prosecutors revealed that DNA evidence found on Janaya's body has come back from the crime lab with a positive match for Garcia's DNA.

Prosecutors also revealed Janaya died from hanging from the bathroom window by a sock. Her body was found inside an abandoned trailer near her home about 12 hours after a massive search began.

Prosecutors said Friday that Garcia told investigators that night after the assault, he went home and took a shower. While he was in the shower, Janaya's family knocked on his door and asked if he had seen the missing girl. Garcia told investigators he then joined in the search for Janaya.

The courtroom was packed with supporters for the family, but Janaya's parents were not present.

Another man, Julian Casper Gray, is still considered a person of interest in the case, and is being held on an unrelated charge. More charges could be on the way in the case.

WLOX Reporter Michelle Lady was in the courtroom for today's hearing and will have more details on the investigation later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com.

Alberto J. Garcia, left, and Julian C. Gray III (person of interest)

Detective: Ja'Naya Thompson sexually assaulted, hung with two pairs of socks

    By Robin Fitzgerald
    The Sun-Herald

GULFPORT -- A Gulfport police detective has testified Alberto Garcia admitted sexually assaulting 5-year-old Ja'naya Thompson and helping hang her with two pairs of socks.

Garcia later told police a neighbor, Julian Gray, had knocked on his door and said he had done something to a little girl and needed help, Gulfport police Det. Samuel Jewell testified Friday morning.

Garcia said he followed Gray to a nearby vacant mobile home and Ja'Naya was lying in a green chair in a bedroom.

Garcia told police he tried to wash evidence off her body with water from a toilet bowl and said his finger "may have" slipped inside her private parts.

The child was reported missing from The Palms apartments the night of July 16.

She was found dead -- hanged and wearing only a shirt -- the next day.

Gray is held on unrelated charges and evidence that may link him to the case is at the FBI's crime lab, the detective said.

After hearing police evidence, Harrison Count Court Judge Robin Alfred Midcalf found probable cause to bind the case over to the next grand jury,

SunHerald.com is working on an updated news report of court coverage.

Warden: Several threats have been made against Alberto Garcia

    By Michelle Lady
    WLOX News

HARRISON COUNTY, MS - Alberto Garcia is accused of a heinous crime; sexually assaulting and murdering 5-year-old Janaya Thompson. Since there is a high probability of threats against inmates accused of these types of crimes against children, Harrison County Jail Warden Maj. David Sanderson said Garcia cannot be housed with the rest of the inmates.

Sanderson admits Garcia has received several threats against his life.

"It's because of his charges and the threats he has received internally and externally," Sanderson said.

Sanderson said jail officials are legally responsible for inmates' safety. That is why Garcia and the person of interest in Janaya's murder, Julian Gray, have both been placed in protective custody since being arrested July 18.

"You have to understand, just because they are inmates and they are housed here it's all about care, custody and control," Sanderson said. "We have to make sure the inmate is safe and secure and cared for as well."

This is also true when inmates are brought to court. You may remember a week and a half ago when Garcia had a hearing at the county courthouse, security was tight. Everyone entering the courtroom had to be patted down and checked.

"We wanted to make sure Mr. Garcia's safety was first," Sanderson said. "That's why, in his circumstances and in past circumstances with other inmates as well, we have done the same thing and made sure we had extra personnel for their safety."

Garcia is also on suicide watch, because the warden said he has attempted suicide. He must be checked on every 10 minutes and is placed in what jail officials call a "suicide safe cell."

"When a person makes threats to harm themselves, at that time they are evaluated by a social worker, licensed social worker or psychiatrist, and then they determine whether or not that person goes on suicide watch," Sanderson said.

Wednesday, Garcia was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing for the burglary charge, which is unrelated to the capital murder of Janaya Thompson. Garcia was escorted into the jail courtroom in a padded smock, and no other inmates were allowed in the courtroom while Garcia was in there.

Garcia did not end up going before the judge Wednesday. Instead, his attorney postponed the hearing for another two weeks.

Family, friends remember Janaya's 'beautiful spirit' on her 6th birthday

    By Michelle Lady
    WLOX News

Wednesday was another painful milestone for a Gulfport family that has been through so much. October 15, 2014 would have been Janaya Thompson's sixth birthday. The young girl was brutally murdered in July. Gulfport police have charged Alberto Garcia with her murder.

"She was a sweet little girl," Janaya's neighbor Bobbie Culpepper said, "always laughing and playing and running up and down the street, and she had lots of little friends around here."

The beautiful girl with a big smile only lived a short life, but made a lasting impression on those who met her.

"She was just a happy little girl," neighbor Barbara Dulier said. "She was beautiful, her little spirit, everything."

"She was always high spirited," Eddie Dulier said.

Janaya's tragic death has left a void in the apartment complex she once called home. The parking lot where neighbors used to see Janaya laughing and playing is now only a place where people park their cars.

"You don't ever see children out here playing anymore," Culpepper said. "My neighbor moved away. She had a little girl that played with her and her mother called her that lived out of state and said she was coming to get her and they moved out the next day, or the day after. So I feel sure some people have moved out and not moved in because of that."

On a day supposed to be about celebrating and making memories with your family, we found Janaya's mother at the cemetery visiting with her daughter, holding birthday balloons. Janaya's family members shared a picture of a birthday cake for their lost loved one on Facebook.

"You lost an angel and try to remember the good things that happened and not the bad ones," Culpepper said, "and try and keep her memory alive in your heart."

Person of interest in Janaya Thompson slaying charged with possessing child porn

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A man considered a "person of interest" in the death of Ja'Naya Thompson is facing new charges connected to child pornography. But police say they're not connected to the sexual assault and murder of the 5-year-old girl.

Julian Gray lived at the same apartment complex as Ja'Naya Thompson, and was arrested the same day the young girl was found dead. At that time, investigators confiscated his computer, and just recently found child pornography on it.

Wednesday, Gulfport police charged Gray with two counts of exploitation of children. He's already facing charges of sexual battery and rape for allegedly assaulting an adult female at his apartment complex two months before Ja'Naya's murder.

Gray was supposed to make an initial appearance on those charges Wednesday, but since the new charges were added that hearing has been postponed.

Police say they still consider Gray a person of interest in the murder of Thompson. He remains behind bars at the Harrison County Jail on a combined bond of $700,000.

Alberto Garcia has been charged of capital murder in the death of the little girl. He remains in jail and, according to the jail docket, his case has been bound over to a grand jury.
