    Robert Hansen - "Butcher Baker"

    Robin Pelkey

Bob Hansen showed authorities 17 grave sites on the map and confessed to 17 murders in total. Only 12 bodies were ever found. Many believe he killed more with 24 'x' marks on the map discovered in his home.

The victims of Hansen are believed to include:

Andrea 'Fish' Altiery (22) - Disappearred December 2, 1981. Hansen confessed to killing Fish, but her body was never found.

Sherry Morrow (23) - Disappeared November 17, 1981, Body Found September 12, 1982, in a shallow grave on the bank of the Knik River. She had been shot in the back, but there were no bullet holes in her clothing, indicating she had been shot while nude and then redressed before being buried.

Eklutna Annie (true identity unknown) (16–25) - Disappeared between November 1979 – June 1980. Body found, July 21, 1980, in a shallow grave off Eklutna Lake Rd, it had been partially eaten by wild animals and the body had been stabbed in the back.

Joanna Messina (24) - Disappeared Early July 1980. Body Found, late July 1980, a badly decomposed body was found in a gravel pit.

Ceilia “Beth” Van Zanten (17) - Disappeared December 22, 1971. Body found December 25, 1971. Hansen denied killing her, but is suspected because of an "x" on his aviation map.

Megan Emerick (17) - Disappeared July 7, 1973. Hansen denied killing her, but is suspected because of an "x" on his aviation map.

Mary Thill (22) - Disappeared July 5, 1975. Hansen denied killing her, but is suspected because of an "x" on his aviation map.

Born at Pocahontas, Idaho, in 1940, Hansen was the son of a Danish immigrant who followed in his father's footsteps as a baker. In his youth, Hansen was skinny and painfully shy, afflicted with a stammer and a severe case of acne that left him permanently scarred. (In later years, he would recall his face as "one big pimple.") Shunned by the attractive girls in school, he grew up hating them and nursing fantasies of cruel revenge.

Hansen was married in 1961 and divorced within the year, following his first arrest, on charges of arson. Six years later, he wed another Pocahontas native and she followed him to Anchorage, Alaska, where he opened his own bakery and prospered in a new land, safely removed from the painful memories of childhood and adolescence. Hansen took flying lessons and purchased his own private plane, earning a reputation as an outdoors man and hunter who stalked Dahl sheep, wolves, and bear with a rifle or bow and arrow.

Unknown to local authorities, Hansen's visible activities were only the tip of a very lethal iceberg. According to his subsequent confession, Hansen preyed consistently on women in the decade between 1973 and 1983, murdering 17 and raping another 30 who survived.

The first indication of a killer at large came in 1980, when construction workers unearthed a woman's remains near Eklutna Road. Stabbed to death in 1979, she was never identified, dubbed "Eklutna Annie" by police assigned to work the case. Later that year, the corpse of Joanna Messina was found in a gravel pit near Seward, and a special task force was organized to probe the killings. Topless dancer Sherry Morrow had been dead ten months when hunters found her body in a shallow grave beside the Knik River, but the discovery brought authorities no closer to a solution in their case.

Alaska serial killer dies at 75, decades after confessing to killing prostitutes and dancers

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Convicted Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen, who hunted down women in the Alaska wilderness in the 1970s as Anchorage boomed with construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, died Thursday. He was 75.

Alaska Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sherrie Daigle said Hansen died at Alaska Regional Hospital after being in declining health for the past year.

Hansen was convicted in 1984 after confessing to killing 17 women, mostly dancers and prostitutes, during a 12-year span. He was convicted of four of the murders in a deal that spared him having to go to trial 17 times.

The Anchorage baker also confessed to raping another 30 women in that time.

Hansen was the subject of a 2013 film titled, "The Frozen Ground," which starred Nicolas Cage as an Alaska State Trooper investigating the slayings. Actor John Cusack portrayed Hansen.

Hansen was serving a 461-year sentence in Alaska.

Remains of Alaska serial killer's victim exhumed 30 years later

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The remains of a victim of recently deceased Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen were being exhumed from an Anchorage gravesite, 30 years after her killer led authorities to her body near a lake north of the city.

Hansen confessed to killing 17 women in the 1970s and early '80s. Hansen died last month at age 75 while serving a 461-year sentence in Alaska.

The exhumation at Anchorage Memorial Park Wednesday afternoon was for the remains of an unidentified woman believed to be in her late teens whose body was found April 25, 1984, near Horseshoe Lake.

The Alaska state medical examiner's office is among those participating in the exhumation. The work is being paid for by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which hopes to identify the woman.

Alaska troopers identify serial killer's victim with DNA match after 37 years

Only one of Robert Hansen's 12 known victims remains unidentified

    Fox News

A victim of an Alaskan serial killer has finally been identified after almost 40 years thanks genetic genealogy and a DNA match.

Robin Pelky, who was 19 at the time, was killed by Robert Hansen, known as the "Butcher Baker," in the early 1980s. For 37 years, she was only known as "Horseshoe Harriet," one of a dozen or so of Hansen’s victims.

"I would like to thank all of the troopers, investigators, and analysts that have diligently worked on this case over the last 37 years," Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner James Cockrell said in a statement. "Without their hard work and tenacity, the identity of Ms. Pelkey may have never been known."

Pelky, a sex worker, had no identification on her body when investigators found her. Hansen told investigators that he had taken her to Horseshoe Lake in a small plane, murdered her and discarded the body, but he knew nothing about her.

Pelky was buried in the Anchorage Municipal cemetery as an unknown, but investigators exhumed her body in 2014 when Hansen died in prison at the age of 75.

A bone sample provided DNA, which troopers used to generate a profile and add to a public access gene database in April. Troopers found several close matches and identified close relatives located in Arkansas and Alaska.

A relative in Arksansas provided DNA that allowed troopers to positively identify Pelky, and her family was notified in September. No one could say why her parents didn’t report her missing at the time.

Hansen abducted women – many of them sex workers – in the wilderness just north of Anchorage when the city’s population boomed due to construction of the trans-Alaska pipeline.

Glenn Flothe, a retired state trooper who helped apprehend Hansen, said during a 2008 interview that Hansen started to target sex workers when he learned that they were harder to track and less likely to be missed.

Hansen was convicted in the deaths of four women but confessed to killing more. He led investigators to a spot north of Anchorage where he pointed out where he had buried 17 of his victims.

Troopers dug up the remains of eight of the women, allowing them to work to identify a total of 12 of Hansen’s victims: Only 11 have now been identified, with the last one known as "Eklutna Annie," believed to be Hansen’s first victim, discovered near Eklutna Lake.

Thanks to the genetic genealogy effort that helped identify Pelky, troopers remain hopeful that the final victim may be identified sooner rather than later.

Randy McPherron, an Alaska State Troopers cold case investigator, told the Associated Press that the process could take up to a year.
