Darrell Wayne Frederick - Oklahoma Death Row

Jury deliberating in murder trial of Oklahoma man accused of beating mother to death with a brick

The jury is deliberating in the murder trial of Darrell Frederick. He’s facing the death penalty, accused of beating his 87-year-old mother with a brick inside her home in March 2011.

Connie Bernice Frederick died later at a hospital.

    Attorneys presented closing arguments Monday.

Defense attorneys claimed Connie Frederick’s injuries could have resulted from a fall.

Prosecutors argued two eyewitnesses saw Darrell Frederick wielding a brick outside her home.

Frederick was living with his mother at the time. He had previously lived with his brother, an Oklahoma City police officer.

He has a long rap sheet. He was charged in another murder in 2007 but was acquitted.

If convicted in his mother’s murder, he faces the death penalty.

Verdict reached in brutal beating case

OKLAHOMA CITY - The jury reached a verdict Monday night in the case of a man accused of brutally beating his deaf, elderly mother in March 2011.

Darrell Frederick was found guilty of murder in the first degree, guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon and guilty of domestic abuse.

Court will reconvene at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The jury will consider punishment, death, or life without the possibility of parole.

Police said Frederick beat his 87-year-old mother, Connie, with a brick and she later passed away at the hospital.

Frederick had turned himself in to police and was charged with first degree murder.

This was not Frederick's first run in with the law. He was acquitted on a first degree murder charge in 2007.

Jury finds Oklahoma man accused of beating mother to death with a brick guilty

    By Abby Broyles
    KFOR-TV

OKLAHOMA CITY – Monday night a jury found a man accused of killing his 87-year-old mother with a brick guilty.

Thursday night, the jury recommended Darrell Frederick receive the death penalty for allegedly murdering his mother, Connie Bernice Frederick, inside of her home in March 2011.

She died from her injuries at the hospital.

    Attorneys presented closing arguments Monday.

Defense attorneys claimed the injuries could’ve resulted from a fall, but prosecutors argued two eyewitnesses saw Frederick wielding a brick outside his mother’s home.

Connie Frederick was deaf and communicated by sign language.

Her granddaughter testified when she found her grandmother on the floor, badly beaten, Connie signed to her that Darrell did it.

Several family members have been in court for the entire trial.

“It hurts, it hurts a lot,” Karen Frederick says. “She was special, very special in the way she communicated. She was very loving. She was very compassionate.”

Frederick was living with his mother at the time.

He has a long rap sheet.

In 2005 Frederick was acquitted on multiple charges of assault and battery and kidnapping.

He was also charged in another murder in 2007, but was acquitted.

Oklahoma man sentenced to death after being convicted of killing mother

The death warrant has been signed for a man convicted of a beating that left his mother dead.

Darrell Wayne Frederick, 59, was convicted by an Oklahoma County jury in November of the first-degree murder of his mother, 87-year-old Connie Bernice Frederick. The jury sentenced him to death, and to an additional 26 years on two other violent crimes stemming from the same incident, which occurred in northeast Oklahoma City.

Monday, Oklahoma County District Judge Timothy Henderson sentenced Frederick to death in accordance with the jury’s choice of punishment.

The execution date is set for March 20, but Frederick’s lawyers have notified the court they will appeal. Death sentence appeals typically take several years before they run their course.

The judge asked Frederick is he wished to say anything in court, and the convicted killer took issue with several matters during the trial, including the fact that his lawyers chose not to call a witness he wanted to testify.

“All the truth wasn’t told in this case,” Frederick said.

    About the case

On March 26, 2011, Frederick began arguing with Connie Frederick. His niece fled the house and Frederick chased after her with a brick. He went back into the house, and his mother was found soon after with severe swelling to her face and head. She was taken to a hospital, where she died April 30, 2011.

During the trial, jurors heard about Frederick’s previous convictions for robbery and burglary, among other crimes.

“It’s just tragic by all accounts. Connie was a wonderful woman that was loved by many. Loved by her neighbors ... and extended family. She was one of the few people who was always there for Darrell, and always nurtured and tried to take care of him. It’s tragic that she lost her life at his hands,” prosecutor Suzanne Lavenue said.

Frederick remains in the Oklahoma County jail pending a transfer to the custody of the state Corrections Department.

Oklahoma Court Denies New Hearing for Man in Mother's Death

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has denied a new hearing for a death row inmate convicted of beating his 87-year-old mother to death.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has denied a new hearing for a death row inmate convicted of beating his 87-year-old mother to death.

The court handed down the ruling Thursday to 63-year-old Darrell Wayne Frederick, who sought an evidentiary hearing on claims that his attorney was ineffective and prosecutors committed misconduct at his first-degree murder trial.

Frederick was sentenced to death by a jury in Oklahoma County for the death of his mother, Connie Frederick. Prosecutors say the elderly woman was beaten with a brick inside her home on March 26, 2011. She died at a hospital a month later.

Among other things, the court rejected Darrell Frederick's claim that prosecutors withheld evidence before his trial. His appellate attorney, Kristi Christopher, didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Connie must've been one very tough woman, most people can barely get out their last words in a situation like that.
