Mexican Mafia "Serial Killer" rolls over in San Antonio

This past week in San Antonio, TX news media covered the arrest of Ruben Reyes for his part in sanctioning the murder of an off-duty Balconies Heights officer. The males who actually pulled the trigger on the officer had already been arrested. The officer was said to have ties to the Mexican Mafia, although that had not been confirmed. Reyes was arrested by FBI, Texas DPS and San Antonio investigators who were working a task force targeting organized crime in South Texas. What was not reported was that Reyes had admitted to killing at least 16 other people over a several year period. Reyes was interviewed by SAPD homicide detectives over several days and gave specific details on numerous unsolved murder cases. The details Reyes revealed left no doubt he was present at the murders and had actually committed the killings himself. Reyes also led investigators to three bodies buried in a rural area. The three bodies were identified and found to be members of the Mexican Mafia who were reported missing by their families.

What prompted this rare cooperation from a hardened killer? Apparently the Mexican Mafia local leadership began to believe Reyes was a liability because of what he knew and could reveal. They attempted to have him killed but the plan wasn't successful. Reyes was shot but survived the incident. When he realized that his beloved brothers had turned on him, Reyes struck back. Knowing he was a "dead man walking" Reyes walked into SAPD Headquarters and began to talk. That lasted for over a week and when it was done, numerous cases were cleared.

What is interesting about Reyes is his feelings for the Mexican Mafia. He was truly a loyal soldier. Talking gave him no pleasure and the admiration he had for the gang was apparent . Although he felt betrayed, he understood why they turned on him and said he had done the same thing to other gang members in the past.

Reyes may not fit the profile of a true serial killer because his actions were almost always related to the criminal enterprise of the Mafia, but his demeanor and pride say something else. When describing the details of each murder you could tell he was proud of his work. He was also proud of the fact that through several years and a multitude of investigations, he remained relatively unknown to the police.

He was one of the most interesting murderers I have ever talked with. The prosecution of these murder cases is planned to be handled by US Attorneys as part of an ongoing RICO case. It is interesting to consider what might happen if he had faced state charges in a District Court. At least one of the crimes he confessed to is a capital case with two victims. If convicted on that case the numerous other murders could be used during a punishment phase.

The interesting part; Reyes could care less!

"Law Enforcement" doesn't have the bodies. The Medical Examiner would have completed the autopsies by this point. There was some local media coverage when the bodies were recovered but not much since. Feds are using most of the murders this guy claimed to have done in a long ranging investigation. They are better at keeping things quiet than local LE. And I purposely didn't respond to your question about actually talking to this guy for what should be obvious reasons. I think you can figure it out.

Admitted Mexican Mafia hitman charged in murder of Balcones Heights officer

New indictment accuses Ruben Reyes of 4 gang executions

SAN ANTONIO - A man who admitted to San Antonio police that he was a hitman for the Texas Mexican Mafia was indicted on new charges he killed a Balcones Heights police officer.

Ruben Reyes has been in custody since November 2014 for three murders. Law enforcement sources told KSAT-12 Reyes was connected to the shooting of Julian Pesina.

An indictment returned last week charged Reyes with Pesina's murder.

Pesina was employed as a Balcones Heights police officer when he was gunned down in May 2014 while off-duty. Investigators have said Pesina was a member of the Texas Mexican Mafia who was killed because he owed the gang money. Alfredo Cardona, Jesse Santibanez and Jerry Idrogo are all awaiting trial on federal charges connected to the murder.

Reyes contacted San Antonio police in November 2014 after he survived an ambush -- what an FBI agent described as a Texas Mexican Mafia "hit."

A criminal complaint said Reyes gave SAPD information on three unsolved murders. He told them how Mark Anthony "Lefty" Bernal, Carlos "Worm" Chapa and Johnny "Smiley" Solis were killed on Jan. 13, 2014. He also told investigators where the men's remains would be found.

Reyes was indicted on federal gun charges related to the murder in November 2014.

In addition to the four murders, the new indictment against Reyes was engaged in racketeering. He is due in court Monday for an arraignment.

If convicted, Reyes faces up to life in prison

Mexican Mafia member admits role in murder of cop

SAN ANTONIO - Ruben "Menace" Reyes pleaded guilty to all federal charges pending against him including the murder Balcones Heights Police Officer Julian Pesina and four Texas Mexican Mafia members.

Reyes, 38, is known as "Lieutenant of Lieutenants" in the Texas Mexican Mafia. He plead guilty to five counts of aiding and abetting the using and discharging of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence; and, five counts of violent crime (murder) in aid of racketeering (VICAR).

Reyes admitted in court that he killed TMM member Ulysses Farias in front of his family in San Antonio on October 12, 2013, in order to improve standing in the TMM. Reyes and TMM member Jerry Moreno carried out the execution based on concerns by TMM leadership that Farias was purportedly talking to federal authorities; and, despite being warned not to because it violated TMM rules, Farias took his wife with him on "dime" collection runs. The "dime" is a 10 percent tax imposed by the TMM on individuals who sell narcotics in their territory for assistance in collecting drug debts as well as a degree of protection from robbery and competing drug dealers.

Reyes also admitted killing TMM "Captain" Mark Anthony Bernal (aka "Lefty"), TMM "General" Carlos Chapa (aka "Worm"), and TMM "Lieutenant of Lieutenants" Johnny Solis (aka "Smiley") for their alleged mishandling of approximately $60,000 and making poor decisions in regards to the TMM daily operations. Reyes subsequently transported and buried the bodies of Bernal, Chapa and Solis in Pearsall

Reyes also admitted that following a failed attempt by TMM members to murder him, Reyes led authorities to the burial site in Pearsall where the bodies of Bernal, Chapa and Solis were recovered.

Reyes admitted responsibility for ordering the murder of Balcones Heights Police Officer Julian Pesina outside his "Notorious Ink Tattoo and Piercing Studio" on May 4, 2014. Reyes said that although he was a police officer, Pesina was simultaneously claiming membership in the TMM, had tattoos consistent with such membership, and was selling drugs to TMM members. Reyes, under orders from TMM leadership, ordered a TMM member, a TMM prospect, and another TMM member, who was not in good standing, to carry out the murder of Pesina. The firearms used to kill Pesina were subsequently given to Reyes.

Reyes, who remains in federal custody, faces life in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for 9am on September 2, 2016.
